Tragedy

Every day, I wake up feeling older.
I sit up, sleep molding in with caution.
Before I am completely aware and alert,
Honesty jolts through my body.
Only one second every day,
I feel like I’ve seen too much,
Like I am too worn, too tired,
On the brink of death.
I see a disgusting jungle that never seems to end,
Rather than the small, comforting world that I dream in,
Live in,
Wake up in.

Every day,
People wake up with me.
They eat,
They work,
They breathe,
They think.
Some will open their eyes for the first time,
And others will die.
Some will hurt,
And some will heal.
Some will love,
But others will live alone.

Tragedy always overshadows us.
It’s something people will argue about.
What is true tragedy?
Do you know it when you feel it?
Do you fail to forget it?
Do we try to ignore it?
Just to keep sleeping,
Breathing,
Loving,
Healing,
Just to move on?

Some mistake tragedy for cause and effect.
If you do drugs, you might die young.
If you stand in a battlefield, you might get shot.
Although these things still shock you,
They were expected.
You knew they could happen,
The chance was likely.

But what about the little girl with leukemia?
Or the man who fell and went into a coma?
The sad mother who had a miscarriage.
The guy who was robbed and murdered on the subway by a stranger.

Some things don’t have to happen,
But they do anyway.
Tragedy doesn’t reason,
It won’t ask karma whether or not the target is worthy.
It’s always here, but we automatically know to ignore it.
Nothing will happen to us.
We didn’t do anything.
There’s a one in a billion chance,

Right?

The jolt of honesty every morning,
Simply tells me that I’m wrong.

Hi you! I'm Demoness and here's my opinion on your poem! :)

To begin with I thought you delivered a very important message in a beautiful way!

Hi do believe though that there are things that could be fixed.
* The structur of this piece is.. well, there is no structur so that could be definitely be improved.
* The length of the stanzas - choppy to say the least!
* The different lengths of each line, it works at some places but disturb the flow at others, read it through and try adding and removing a few words here and there and it'll be much better according to me.

- At last... The positive thing about this;
* Great Imagery
* Very well delivered message
* Great ending - knitting it all together just perfectly!

SO... overall, this had it's flaws but was still a very well-written poem

Good Luck & Keep Writing

"Some say the world will end in fire;
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice." - Robert Frost

Hi,

This was a very powerful piece. You put your idea across skillfully. I found this really heart-wrenching. The opening lines instantly drew me in and I loved your use of rhetorical questions. It develops well, the range of situations covered works well, and the final couplet is great.

The only thing I would suggest is to read this aloud. The rhythm is a bit off in places and if you read it to yourself, even just mumbling or whispering, you will get a better sense of the sound of the piece and will be able to lengthen/shorten/break up lines accordingly. One example of this which really stood out for me was:
'I see a disgusting jungle that never seems to end,
Rather than the small, comforting world that I dream in,"
which I felt was much too long for the stanza.

I feel that this is a piece that I will not be able to shake off for a while. I won't say it was a pleasure, but I will say it was a well-written and moving piece which I believe did what it set down to do in making the reader think and communicating powerful emotion.

Hope this helps,

Jas

Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise."

Well this looks like it's going to be my last review day review... and I'm glad it was yours!
You put across what you had to say in a really effective manner and I think you've definitely acheived the effect you;ve been going for.
Unlike Demoness, I think you don't really need to alter your stanzas; they don't look as if they're craving a particular form or structure and they reaad fine just the way they are.
I would, on the other hand, agree with what Jasmine had to say about your rhythm. In certain places it was ever so slightly out which I think can be put down to the syllable count in each line. As she said, read it aloud and you will soon spot where the issues arise and be able to put them right. If you can't hear them, ask a family member or trusted friend to either listen out for them or to read the poem back to you. I often find that I can't notice any errors when I can see what I'm reading.
Well that's me reviewed out and with one minute to spare I'd better hurry to press submit!
Demoness was right though, but every poem has it's flaws. Everything ever written has it's flaws. But if it was perfect, it would just be boring... don't you think?
Happy August review day, and if you have any questions regarding the review (or want me to attempt another) don't hesitate to ask! I'm here at your disposal :)
Keep up the writing!
Icy.
Over and out.
