hi, so how does this site work?

Hey, I've been on the site Inkpop for a while and I've heard that this is the only other good writing site. However, I don't know exactly how this site works, in relation to Inkpop.

What kind of work do people post on here? Just short stories and poems, or novels to?

I may sound stupid, but I just want to get a hang of the site

Hi, Maple! Welcome to YWS!
You can post pretty much anything here as long as you post it in the correct forum. Go to "Discover Works" at the top of your screen and click on "All Literary Forums." There you'll find categories under poetry, short stories, novels, and even art and photography.
If you want some help getting to know the site, you can get a mentor from The Buddy System here. A buddy will answer any questions you may have, review your work, help introduce you to other members, and so forth.

Welcome!! I'm fairly new too, and still getting the hang of things... but good to know I'm not the only one!!!

Hey, there, welcome to YWS! I'm sure you'll love it here: it is a most excellent place to write and find others with similar interests. Here is my personal advice about getting around the site, but the buddy system is a good method also, as Sea suggested.

- There are a few different categories that are good to know about:
* Your Profile: this is under My YWS, and it is basically where you can edit your profile, send messages, check out your work, etc.
* The Writing!: this is under Discover Works, and this is where you can find the writing of other members, either by forum or by recently added. Remember to review!
* Blogging: to read others' blogs or post to your own, you'll want to look under Blogs. This can be a fun way to keep up with the lives and musings of other YWSers.
* Clubs: this is an easy way to share interests with other members, and it found under Clubs. Join or make your own!
* Contests: under Contests, there are many different options if you want to submit your work for competition or just get cool prompts along the way! You can also make one of your own.
* Storybooks: A lot of fun, storybooks are best explained in the thread under the category Storybook RPGs.
* Forums, Chatting, Games, Advice, etc: All of these cool activities are under Community. This is typically the best way to meet new people, have fun, get advice/reviews, welcome newbies, chat, nominate for awards, and do much of the stuff that YWS has to offer. A bit overwhelming at first, it's really quite fun once you click around and explore it all for a bit.
* Your Writing: most important of all, submitting your own work! This is found under Submit, and most of the particulars are explained in the process. Remember to rate your work! Especially if it does contain mature content.

That's pretty much the basics of YWS! Remember that you earn points by reviewing, and that you need points to post your own work. If you have any questions or want some reviews, feel free to PM me! Hope this helped a little.

Also, do Canadians really say "eh" all the time? I've talked to various Canadians, and the only real thing that jumps out at me and makes me flinch is that they say "Pardon?" when they don't understand what you say. Down here in California, we'll just go, "What?" Anyway, "Pardon?" sounds so formal that it makes me tweak out. And yes, I am crazy, lol.

It seemed like the previous people before me have explained this site quite a bit and you already said that you are getting the hand of it, so I won't go into that too much or at all, really.

As, I've never been to Inkpop before, I can't say the differences or similarities between the two sites. But YWS is really, really good, as you get proper, detailed feedbacks on your works and you can improve a lot with your writing here. I know I have. And I haven't even been here all that long, in comparison with some of the others.

We post all of those as well as scripts, lyrics, photography and art. There's also an 'other' category in which you can post up anything that can be posted up.

What about you? What do you write? Poems, stories, novels or art?

@MiRaCLeS: I'm writing a novel it's 35k right now also you should really try Inkpop, I've found the two sites are the same in a lot of ways, but are also very different :/

I love noobies! Anyway. I was new a few months ago, and I had all of the same questions. So its all good =] You can post anything on here. Whether it be a poem, story, novel, or a project from school. You can even post art work and photos, which is really cool. The point of this site is to post your work and get feedback from readers so they can help you improve. Granted at times people will seem harsh, its almost always to better you and your work =]. ALSO, good grammar is a must. Capitilzation, commas, and correct spelling are a must, unless of course you're setting a scene in your writing. But the 'hey, wuz up' stuff, isn't really fun to read. Haha =] But anyway, welcome to YWS and I hope you enjoy it. There are loads of people on here that are great to talk to and will help you with anything if you ask them to. Myself included.

P.S. Remember to review other people's work too so then you can rack up points and post more of your own pieces.

I'm Grif, one of the friendly Moderators on the site. I'm glad to see you're getting the hang of YWS. One of the other features of YWS is our Moderating Staff. If you look at the member names, you'll notice that some of them are in different colors. The light green members are Jr. Moderators, who moderate specific areas of YWS. There are also dark green members; these are the Global Moderators. We can help you with pretty much any aspect of the site. The last color is red; those refer to the forum Administrators. Generally you'll only need to contact these folks if you're having trouble with a moderator.

If you have any trouble with anyone or anything, just shoot me a PM and we'll sort it out.

Hmm... maybe the Canadians I talked with were extraordinarily polite then? I didn't notice them say "eh" either, but they did say pardon a lot! I think, though, with any other really geographically different areas, you would notice slight differences of speech and stuff... especially for the little things! But that's why linguistics is such a neat field.

We also say restroom! It's a bit strange. I like restroom better.

We do have washrooms, but it's just what it says... a room where you wash your hands. There's actually no bath or toilet in it. We have them in labs and tech places where we need to clean our hands before we do anything. So, technically they do exist, but not in the way you think, lol.

With that said, it's still really rare and quite often the labs that I've been in do not have a separate room for the sink. I've only been in one place where they actually did have a bonafide washroom! That was in a radio station in Berkeley, California.
