March 2011 Statistics

March 2011 has now come and gone, and the results are in: it was by far our busiest month ever. Not quite sure what happened since March is usually a slow month for YWS, but I'm not complaining.

Pageviews: 925,262 (new record)
Visits: 62,988 (new record)
Unique Visitors: 15,906

Total Topics: 1,492

Overall
Our previous busiest month by pageviews was June 2010 with 846,292 pageviews. So not only did March beat that, but it clobbered it as well. However, June's activity quickly fell-off owing to the summer months. Will that happen this time as well? April has always been a bigger month than March, and May tends to be a month where we see sharply increased activity. But, YWS is a small community and so activity tends to be volatile.

At any rate, I'm certainly hoping we continue to see the same rate of reviewing. March 2011 is only the third month ever to have more than 4,000 reviews, and the first non-January month to do so (January is always a big month for reviews). If we could continue to do that every month, that'd be awesome.

On a sidenote, how interested would people be in having a YWS statistics page that everyone could access? And if you are interested, what kind of statistics would you like on it?

Because it's not an individual dot! From what I can tell, there is at least one other active YWSer from Helsinki.

Canada is going nuts. I don't think I've ever seen two Canadian cities in the top-ten. Let alone one in the top 5. (I think I'm spending too much time on YWS)

Maybe that is because of the huge hullabaloo about the mods. It did cause an uproar. I am just guessing though.

I forgot to mention that our Review Day this past March was the busiest day for YWS ever in terms of pageviews.

But, it's just as well that I didn't because that'd be a lie now. April 1, 2011 is now the busiest day ever for YWS in terms of pageviews.

I like thinking about what the constant increase means for member retention. I keep looking at my friends list, and I keep noticing more people that stick around past a few years. It's nice! Could be why we keep growing? New members+ old member retention.

I've been noticing that lately as well.

I think we definitely are doing a better job with old member retention, and I think it's due to a cascading effect (if that's the right term). That is, with more old members sticking around, other old members end up doing so as well. That effect in turn leads to many others coming back who were active months/years ago.

And you're right; when we have these bursts of activity, it's not due to new members. New member registration tends to be rather static; March 2011 did hit a new record in that regard, but the number of new member registrations wasn't really that much higher than previous months and it's also inflated by the number of JM alt accounts. So when we have these bursts of activity, it's largely because of old members. That was definitely true with Review Day and April Fools Day, but it also holds true for the past few weeks.
