Ach, suffered miserably is more like it. I'd heard tales of the white powder from visitors who would come and lodge at our house before the pratie crop failed. But when it actually came in '47, it made the already suffering Irish hurt even more. 'Tis hard and cold, snow is. I wish to Mother Mary we had been able to prance about in it. How grand that would have been! But, alas, the praties are gone, so we can't enjoy anything anymore...

Often the poor people wondering the roads have nothing but the clothes on their back, sometimes no shoes at all. For me, just a pair of thick, solid boots would be simply grand. Ach, me shoes are near worn through for I've had them just nigh of three years. None can afford such luxuries as new shoes these days...
