A Centaur, a Hatter, and a Bear

So yeah, I felt like uploading some art to see what you guys thought. These are just a few pieces ranging in date of creation from last school year to a few months ago. Um, enjoy! ^^ Rated for shirtless men and weapons. oh, and sorry about the ridiculous sizing. They came right from my Deviantart account. Oops.

"Centaur" <--creative title is creative
Done on a scrap piece of cardboard and painted in calligraphy ink with a brush (because I'm too cool to use a pen, apparently). No reference used for this... except maybe that one Asian guy on the most recent season of Project Runway that had hair like this. ^^'

"Waiting for Alice"
Number two pencil and Prismacolor colored pencils. Woo. Reference used for the pose. (this is an old one, and I was still trying to get a grasp on male anatomy. *racks brain*)

"Divine Punishment"
My pretty little bear goddess of vengeance. :3 The kanji on her mace is supposed to read "divine punishment," but if it's incorrect please feel free to correct me. ^^' Materials: watercolor paint, glitter, acrylic paint, black ink, white colored pencil all on a random scrap of some sort of thick paper.

Now, I would love to review these pictures, but the sizes are just horrible, I am afraid. They are so large in both length and width. I suggest you resize them. If you need some help doing this, you can always look at the wonderfully helpful thread by Abigail_W. I find myself using it as a guide occasionally, even! The link for that thread is: topic67812.html. Check it out! It's one of the most helpful Art & Photography threads.

On the other hand, if you have these photos saved to your computer, you can always just head over to tinypic.com, a free hosting site, and upload them. Tinypic allows you to choose the size of photos you want -- it's very useful, and the hosting site I use when posting my photography.

Alright. I admit, when looking at this photos, it is obvious you have some definite talent. The main issue I noticed was how you drew a character's body, as some of the shapes and muscles were all wrong, and appeared slightly odd-looking. However, I will address that separately with each singular piece of art. Another problem was some of the lines -- some were very, very definite and sharp, when I felt they should have been "softer".

The first piece, of the centaur, is very well-done. When looking at it, I was immediately impressed -- and it takes a lot for me to be impressed with any artwork or photography, so, bravo! I like how you did his hair, as well. It is very unique and adds a slight personality and characterization to the centaur, if you please. I find that his head is oddly shaped though -- kind of like a dodgeball running out of air was stuck on the back of his head. I understand centaurs are mythical creatures, but also realize that the upper half of their body -- their torso, face, etcetera -- are all human. Most humans' skull shapes do not look like that of this centaur's, and that bothers me slightly. Another issue I noticed is the fact that you never truly defined the ground in this photo. You drew some grass on the sides, but that is all. Is he walking in the air?

You did the horse part of him quite wonderfully, I must say, but I wish you had made the length of the horse just a tad longer -- the horse body looks particularly squashed up for some reason. Another issue I noticed was the -- and this is going to be an awkward subject, yes -- is his chest, and his nipples. Yes, awkward, hmm? At the moment, his, rem, nipples just look like tiny dots and you have made his chest seem very flat (in an odd way). Like, his muscles look like they do not have a whole lot of definition. The shading throws me off -- maybe revisit that area. To add to that, his facial features -- his lips, eyes, cheekbones, and eyebrows especially -- all seem very feminine, not like the masculine centaur he is. One final nitpick with this first piece of art is how wide his shoulders are. It strikes me as odd, because he is lightly muscled, which generally means a more lanky body type and not as sharp shoulders. Broader, more muscled men usually have the wider shoulder length. Just to let you know, that is! Still, this might be my favorite out of the bunch.

The second piece of artwork makes me want to do an Alice in Wonderland fangirl scream. I love how in the far background outside the window, you can see the Cheshire Cat smiling. That is just divine, I tell you! I also love how the Mad Hatter's hat is sitting on the nightstand/seat type thingamajig. Now, on to the things I didn't like. One of the major problems I had with this was just the anatomy of this fella's body. I understand you are trying to make him see muscular and defined, but he really just looks messed up, to be honest. He almost looks slightly like an anorexic girl. On the other hand, his legs are hidden in that flour-bag type deal, and yet his poky knees still stick out. This part of the picture is ugly -- his legs. They are direly misshapen. Now, I do like what you were trying to do with the red hair, but I do not think you executed it all too well. His hair is not shaded in completely, and so it looks like he has a bald spot in a few spots, where it's just all white and see-through-like. On that subject, since the whole picture is colored in, why did you leave his skin the color of the paper? Why not shade it in to look more humanly? That's what I'd have done. Still, decent job.

The third picture, however, is possibly my least favorite of these pieces of artwork. It has a more anime look to it than the others, and personally, I never have liked anime shows or artwork (no one murder me here). I do, however, like the colors in this art. I love the yellow thing -- ah, I sound ever so sophisticated -- behind her head. It looks like you have glitter on this, too. Now, what I do not like is how her hair completely squashes her head and makes it look all weird. She seems like she would have a Jimmy Neutron shaped head if you shaved her hair off, just saying. Now, aside from that, I do not like the add-in of bunny ears on her head. She's supposed to be some psycho murderer type girl, right? Why the bunny ears, I ask? Aside from that, her chest seems misshapen, like you squashed part of her chest into that belt-type deal. One final nitpick: her arms/hands. Did you know that when you reach both your hands out to both sides, that is the length of your body, supposedly? If she reached both of her tiny arms out to each side, she'd barely make a foot, it seems. Also, they seem very weak and not the kind of arms that could hold an axe.

Overall, there are some definite things you need to work on. When drawing a picture of a person, try and find a photograph you can go off of, so you get the shape of her or his body right. Aside from that, watch how sharp your lines become. And be very careful of proportions. Remember, different type of people you draw will have different, well, looks -- self explanatory -- so you won't always be drawing the same outline. You can't. I hope this helps.

Well, Mizz, that was more of a review than I thought I'd receive, so thank you. ^^
There are plenty of things I could say in response to your critique and in defense of some of my style choices...and sub par anatomy (Bunny is still workin' on it), but I'm not going to. The bad thing about art, I guess, is that you can't very well go back and fix things in a finished work, no matter how much little flaws irk me. I just try to progress and learn from my mistakes (and stew over them occasionally). Likewise, everyone has their own taste, so I know I can't always appeal to every eye. I'm just glad to get an opinion that isn't just "This is cool" from a stranger or "This is SO unspeakably awesome you're going to be a famous artist I love you" from a friend or family member. To the point, I'm glad you liked my centaur even if he does look like a girl.

I can see what Mizzle meant by "some of the shapes and muscles were all wrong, and appeared slightly odd-looking" most noticeably, to me, the elbow on the right. Now, my understanding of human anatomy is very primitive, to say the least, so I'm gonna hafta let all the other errors slide. However, I'm sure you could do much, much better than me.
So keep practicing, you'll definitely get gooder.

The Hatter
Here your anatomy is perfect (except for the bony fingers and the fact that I can only see one leg), so I'm going to work on the background.
Your perspective is very skewed. The hatter himself is sitting down on a block, and we cannot see the top of the block. This means that we are viewing things side-on. However, the black-and-white-striped road is either rearing up into the air like a bobsled track, or your perspective shifts between fore- and background.
The trees should get darker as they recede into the distance, and most of the objects (clock, arrows) are far too defined. They stick out in a contrast that does not become them.

For the last, I must say it seemed very strange, much like an Indian Goddess (what with the numerous symbols and multiple arms) The Hanji threw me off a bit, but I decided you were going for a mystical, mysterious, not-so-murderous killer-girl-type-thing. Makes sense? Didn't think so.
The lower-left arm does not match the lower-right arm, in that the right ebows almost touch, whereas the left elbows are much farther away.
Also, there is a crease in the paper, and the color seems darker above the line.

All that aside, you did a wonderful job, very mystical. I suggest that you work on better paper, as it will greatly increase the look of your art.

Wow, this is some great stuff! For some reason the third picture won't show on my computer, but that's probably just a little technical issue on my end

On the centaur, I especially like the horse part of him. The shading is very well done, and the muscles look very realistic and strong. I can't believe you didn't need a reference for this! I think the man part of him could be improved a little, his muscles don't look nearly as strong as his bottom half, and he looks like he's leaning backwards just a bit. I'd expect his posture to be more upright and confident, given his expression. The hair is very interesting and unique, and adds to the general effect. Great job on the boar's head, too.

I have zero critiques for the second drawing, I'm sorry, but it's lovely The colors are very good, and I usually don't like when people use a lot of solid gray like you did, but it looks nice here. I have no clue whatsoever on how to do male anatomy, so I'm impressed at how real yours looks.

Of course your drawings aren't perfect, there is always room for improvement, but I can feel the idea and the emotion behind your pictures and to me that is the most important thing of all. Keep up the great work and keep improving!

Brilliant!
I myself have a very hard time drawing people. I don't know why, my mind always takes hold of my hand and turns my people drawings into aliens, anthros or weird freakish monsters. Never people.

I love the mad hatter. Best character ever. Great drawing! (I love the Hatter, so)

And a fantastic centaur, I seem to be able to draw those and yet, not people (I can, however, draw cartoon people).

But I'm weird.

I am sooo jealous of your awesome drawing abilities.
For the centaur:
The muscles seemed oddly shaped to me. You have them coming out from the sternum and neck area, rather than from the sides, where the shadows usually come from. The back of the head is also quite large and circular. Other than that though, I adore this. You, as I've said before, have amazing lines, and they really show in this piece. Wonderful shapes; really reflect an inhumanity without making it blatant. So, great job.

Awesome job, again. The pants seem a bit oddly shaped, which is a shame. They're kind of too baggy, and they hit oddly on him. Otherwise though, lovely job-- I love all of the details and the shading on the guy-- the hands are fabulous.

The last one really wasn't my favorite. It was good for what it was, but really lacked that unreal quality that you lend to the rest of your stuff. I dunno... just not my thing I think.
Overall though, awesome job.

Time to review. I really enjoyed the first picture, how you didn't need to use any colors to make it look good. I actually think it would look worse with colors. I am extremely jealous of your drawing abilities! I can't draw for my life. I prefer to take pictures. You second picture I really liked how you used the word "hither" a lot. I don't know why, I just liked it. The colors and the different doors really took out the brilliance of the picture. But the last picture I really did not enjoy very much. It seems to me that you didn't take your time and it showed. I feel like the colors were in the wrong spot, and I just didn't like it. Just telling my opinion. Although I would like to see some more of your drawings. They are for the most part very good. Keep up the good work!
