INT.> VIP Booth> Black Brush Bar> New York> Night
Opening Scene: Neon Lights dance across the floor as men stand close to the bar's stage, waving dollars in the air like a sea of green in a portrait. The stripper on the stage flips her hair seductively and blows a kiss to a man siiting at the VIP booth with three other gentlemen. The man is half slouched in the booth between two much bigger men. The man looks at the stripper, then at the man across from him.
Fat Louie
She likes you, Lucky.
She likes you, Lucky.
The man known as Lucky was slender, making him appear a lot smaller next to the two muscular men. His blonde curly hair and light skin made him stand out from the other men that were clearly of Italian or Mexican descent. Lucky shrugged at the comment.
Lucky
The girl has good taste. What can I say?
The girl has good taste. What can I say?
Fat Louie laughed so hard that his gut that had been resting comfortably on the table moved and pushed the table closer to Lucky and the other men. Lucky, being as slender as he was, was able to ignore it. The man on Lucky's right politely got up and stood, but the man on Lucky's left was stuck. The man on Lucky's left tried to move so the table wouldn't pin him, but it was useless. Fat Louie made no excuses or apologies he simply ran his hand through his jet-black oiled hair and Lucky watched as Fat Louie's gold rings glistened from the oil.
Fat Louie
You're a good kid so I'll give you some personal advice; never get
tangled up with vampires. Especially vampire women. Right, John?

John, the man still sitting with Lucky, nodded.
Lucky
Talking from personal experience?
Talking from personal experience?
Fat Louie
John used to be in the habit of....not taking
"No" for an answer. One night he came across a hot
piece of tail. Vamp bitch damn near took his whole pecker off.

Lucky
Jesus.
Fat Louie
I wouldn't employ them,
but how could I say no? They never age
and they work for next to nothin'.
Lucky
Money is always a good persuasion.
It'd be a waste to give minimum wage to a
broad that's just going to get old and run down.
Fat Louie
That brings me to my next subject;
How would you like to do a job for me?
[center][center]John

Fat Louie raised a hand and John immediately fell silent.
FAT LOUIE
See, the boys don't think it's a good idea, but you've been with me for a year doing small shit for me. I never heard you complain, you never talk back (glances at John for a moment), and you keep quiet. I like that about you.

Lucky
Thank you.
Thank you.
Fat Louie motioned for Lucky to move so John could leave. After letting John out of the booth, Lucky sat back down.
LUCKY
So what's the job?
FAT LOUIE
(leans in) Murder.
So what's the job?
FAT LOUIE
(leans in) Murder.
Lucky is silent. Fat Louie puts up his fat, jeweled hands up as if to push something away.
FAT LOUIE
I know it's not for everyone, but this is a big fish and I'm giving it to you. It's a chance for advancement.
LUCKY
Who is the mark?
FAT LOUIE
Up and coming senator and his family. He's trying to get equal rights for vampires. Even is trying to say killing vampires counts as murder! Can you believe that shit?
LUCKY
So how do you want me to kill them?
FAT LOUIE
Burn them, shoot them! I don't care how you do it, but get it done.
LUCKY
Thanks.
FAT LOUIE
(smiles and leans back in the booth)
Don't thank me yet, kid.
LUCKY
No, thank you for giving me the information to put you away you sick son of a bitch!
FAT LOUIE
NO! Kill him!

Lucky pushes the table over on Fat Louie, then turns and tackles Fat Louie's bodyguard. As the two fall to the ground, Lucky pulls his gun and shoots John. People scream as they run from the club. The stripper on stage pulls a gun from seemingly nowhere. Fat Louie sees her.
FAT LOUIE
John, ice the bitch!
John, ice the bitch!
An injured John pulls his gun and opens fire. The stripper returns equal gunshots. After killing the other bodyguard, Lucky wrestles John for his gun. John's last shot hits the stripper in the neck and police rush in.
Officer
Everybody freeze!
Everybody freeze!
A tall, muscular officers helps the stripper from the stage and offers her his coat.
Detective Marshall
You're hurt, Charlotte.
Charlotte
I'm fine. I'll get the bullet out later. Help my partner.
You're hurt, Charlotte.
Charlotte
I'm fine. I'll get the bullet out later. Help my partner.
Charlotte and Lucky watch as Fat Louie and his one surviving bodyguard are taken away in a squad car. Charlotte takes a hair band from her wrist and ties back her curly black hair. Lucky is standing next to her with his hands in his pockets.
LUCKY
I'm sorry, Charlie.
CHARLOTTE
For what?
LUCKY
(points to her neck)
That.
CHARLOTTE
(laughs)
Oh this old thing. Barely a flesh wound.
I'm sorry, Charlie.
CHARLOTTE

LUCKY

CHARLOTTE

Lucky looks at the bleeding gaping wound in the center of her neck and chest and frowns.
CHARLOTTE
Look, don't worry about it. It'll be gone by tomorrow. Come on, let's get back to the station.
Look, don't worry about it. It'll be gone by tomorrow. Come on, let's get back to the station.
Int.> Police station> Captain Sunshine's Office> New York> Night
Captain Sunshine was anything but "sunny". She was tall, slender, and had dark features. Wrinkles formed around the permanent frown that didn't seem to show up until Charlotte and Lucky started working there. She was rarely smiling at anyone or anything and her office reflected her personality. The walls were brown paneling and the only paintings she had were done by Van Gogh. She had no pictures of friends or family, leaving everyone to wonder if she even had any. Her desk was free of clutter and black like her carpet. She had a comfortable tan couch --the only light thing in her office-- but that was by no means an invitation to come in. No, because if you were in Sunshine's office you were in trouble.
Lucky and Charlotte walked into her office like two strays crossing the street; cautious and eager to stay together.
Lucky and Charlotte walked into her office like two strays crossing the street; cautious and eager to stay together.
Captain Sunshine
Close the door.
Close the door.
Charlotte kicked the door with her foot and the door slammed. Captain Sunshine cringed, then glared at Charlotte. Charlotte gave an apologetic look, but that never stopped her from always shutting the door with her foot. Captain Sunshine sat back in her over-sized office chair. Her tight black bun kept her from leaning her head entirely back.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
I'd ask what happened tonight but frankly I don't want any excuses from either of you!
LUCKY
Captain--
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
I've heard all I can hear out of you, Lucky! You never follow orders!

I got Fat Louie's confession!
I got Fat Louie's confession!
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
That his lawyers will no doubt find a way around! I told you not to jump the gun! I wanted him to put the damn weapon in your hand before you made the bust!
LUCKY
If he gets off; that's not my problem! I did my job!
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
A job you did half-assed! You had to kill a man, two officers were injured and if your partner wasn't a vampire she'd have been taken out in a body bag too!

Lucky looks as if someone slapped him in the face.
CHARLOTTE
Captain, it really wasn't his fault, I --
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
Stop covering his ass and worry about your own! They could've had Holy bullets in those guns! Then, where would you have been? Both of you get out and don't come back until you get a call from me.

The two do as they're told and leave. When they get outside, Charlotte looks at her watch.
CHARLOTTE
It'll be dawn before I get to my apartment. Got room for me?
LUCKY
Sure.
It'll be dawn before I get to my apartment. Got room for me?
LUCKY
Sure.
The two get into Charlotte's car and drive away from the station. Lucky looks out of the car window.
CHARLOTTE
(sarcastic)
Whoa. Lucky! Don't talk so fast. I can't keep up with the conversation!
(sarcastic)
Whoa. Lucky! Don't talk so fast. I can't keep up with the conversation!
Charlotte laughs, but the laughter fades and silence fills the car again. Lucky turns and looks at her.
LUCKY
Sunshine is right, ya know. I could've gotten you killed tonight.
CHARLOTTE
A lot of things could happen any night. Hell, we could get hit by a bus right now. Don't let her scare you with 'what ifs'. You did the job you were supposed to do and got the hell out of there. It's the same thing I would've done. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Lucky exhales, partly with relief. Charlotte hears Lucky's heartbeat slow to its normal rhythm as she pulls into a parking space at Lucky's apartment complex. They get out of the car and walk to Lucky's apartment. Lucky pats his pockets.
LUCKY
Damn. I left my key at the station. Do you have the key I gave you?
CHARLOTTE
Of course.
Damn. I left my key at the station. Do you have the key I gave you?
CHARLOTTE
Of course.
Charlotte opens the door and walks into the air conditioned apartment. She looks around the conjoined kitchenette and living room and sees clothes everywhere.
CHARLOTTE
Jeez, Lucky, fire your maid.
Jeez, Lucky, fire your maid.
Lucky smiles and watches as Charlotte picks up his clothes. He turns away from her for a moment to lock the deadbolt on his door. When he doors back around, all of his clothes are gone and so is Charlotte. He hears the washing machine start in the other room. He looks down the hallway and sees Charlotte leave the laundry room and walk into the bathroom. He follows her. When he gets into the bathroom, Charlotte is lying in the empty, cold tub.
CHARLOTTE
(looks up at Lucky)
Ready?
LUCKY
Yeah, lose the shirt.
(looks up at Lucky)
Ready?
LUCKY
Yeah, lose the shirt.
Lucky turns to the medicine cabinet and grabs what looks like over-sized tweezers. When he turns back around, Charlotte's bloody shirt is in the trash next to the toilet. Lucky sits on the edge of the tub.
CHARLOTTE
I hate when they stay in.
LUCKY
(shrugs)
Must be a bitch. Then again, better hurt than dead.
CHARLOTTE
I am dead.
I hate when they stay in.
LUCKY
(shrugs)
Must be a bitch. Then again, better hurt than dead.
CHARLOTTE
I am dead.
LUCKY
(glares at her)
You know what I mean.
(glares at her)
You know what I mean.
Lucky pulls the bullet out with the tweezers and holds it up with his thumb and index finger. He lets out a lot whistle.
CHARLOTTE
That gun didn't even look like a .38.
LUCKY
It wasn't. I'm surprised it even fired. Either he's very lucky or you're very unlucky.
That gun didn't even look like a .38.
LUCKY
It wasn't. I'm surprised it even fired. Either he's very lucky or you're very unlucky.
Charlotte's eyes suddenly look glazed and her head bobs forward. Lucky drops the bullet and the tweezers and steadies Charlotte by holding her shoulders.
CHARLOTTE
I feel so tired.
LUCKY
You've lost so much blood already. Did you even feed today?
I feel so tired.
LUCKY
You've lost so much blood already. Did you even feed today?
Charlotte doesn't answer. He lays her back gently so her head rests on the back of the tub. He goes to his fridge and gets a cup of blood. He brings it back to the bathroom. The smell instantly wakes Charlotte. He hold the cup out to her, but she hesitates.
LUCKY
Don't worry; it's just cow blood.
CHARLOTTE
(takes the cup and drinks it quickly)
What were you doing with cow blood?
LUCKY
I know cow blood is your favorite so I talked to the butcher on 5th. He gives me all I can take.
CHARLOTTE
That was sweet of you.
LUCKY
Don't get all mushy on me. You'd do the same for me.
Don't worry; it's just cow blood.

Lucky turns on the water in the tub and takes the empty cup from Charlotte.
LUCKY
Throw those clothes away. I'll get you some new ones.
CHARLOTTE
Thanks.
Throw those clothes away. I'll get you some new ones.
CHARLOTTE
Thanks.
Lucky is asleep in bed when Charlotte comes in wearing his pajamas. She climbs into bed with him and he puts his arm around her.
LUCKY
(opens one eye)
Took you long enough.
CHARLOTTE
Shut up.
LUCKY
(snuggles her teasingly)
Nice to have a woman in my bed.
CHARLOTTE
Pulse not required? You really should think about upping your standards.
LUCKY
(laughs)
'Night, Charlie.
CHARLOTTE
(looks at the sunlight peeking through the window)
Morning, Lucky.

Morning, Lucky.
Int.> Lucky's apartment> new york> Afternoon
Charlotte opens her eyes and turns over to find that Lucky is gone. After getting out of bed, she straightens the silk sheets. The baby blue silk sheets had been a gift from Charlotte. If Lucky had to choose, he'd probably sleep on a concrete slab before shopping for any kind of home decor. He could care less about where he slept as long as he had his four hours of sleep. Charlotte sighed at the thought. Even though she was a vampire, she still had to sleep. Either that, or feed all day and she'd need something a lot larger than a chicken to feed on to stay awake. Charlotte was careful to check for sunlight under the door before she opened it. There was none.
CHARLOTTE
Lucky?
Lucky?
There was no answer, but Charlotte heard a woman yelling when she opened the door. She quickly went to Lucky's side of the bed and grabbed his gun from under his pillow, then ran into the living room. The other woman in the room quickly held her hands in the air when she saw Charlotte with the gun ready to fire. Lucky looked at Charlotte then looked up at the ceiling and shook his head.
Lola
You can have him!
LUCKY
Charlie, this is Lola. Lola, this is my partner, Charlie.
You can have him!
LUCKY
Charlie, this is Lola. Lola, this is my partner, Charlie.
Charlotte lowered the gun, unsure if she wanted to. The way the woman shrieked made Charlotte want to find an excuse to shoot her. Lola was petite and thin and blonde. Charlotte doubted it was her real hair color. After centuries of living, Charlotte had never seen a woman hair look like that and be natural. Charlotte stuck the gun in the front of the pajama pants she was wearing.
CHARLOTTE
Sorry, I heard a woman yelling--
LOLA
I thought Charlie was a man! You lied to me.
Sorry, I heard a woman yelling--
LOLA
I thought Charlie was a man! You lied to me.
Charlotte sat down on a stool in the kitchenette. She wanted to watch the show. It wasn't every day that she got to watch her partner get yelled at by a pint sized blonde....Charlotte thought hard about the last insult. The girl--for lack of a better term--was dressed like a young college girl on spring break. The pink tank top was a size too small, showing her flat stomach complete with belly button ring that she had no doubt gotten to piss off daddy. Her perfectly manicured hands clutched a matching pink bag that should've had one of those tiny annoying dogs sticking out of it. Charlotte was almost afraid to look down, but she did. The girl's shorts were certainly that-short. They were also pink with a white stripe on both hips. Charlotte would bet her entire life's savings that something was written on the back. Charlotte couldn't see the girl's feet but she was sure that they were perfectly manicured and pink too. She turned her attention to Lucky. She realized that this argument must've just started because Lucky was still shirtless and in his red flannel pajama pants. He had a large scar on his upper back that had come from a vampire attack. Other than that, his skin was as close to perfect as it could get. Charlotte prided herself on keeping him scar free. Herself, on the other hand, she didn't even try. Charlotte wasn't the safest person before she became a vampire and had plenty of scars to show for it. Charlotte's thoughts were interrupted when Lucky groaned loudly and lightly pulled his hair with both of his hands.
LUCKY
For the last time; I didn't lie to you! I just didn't want you to get jealous like you do.
LOLA
How can you say that?! For God's sake, Lucky, she's wearing your clothes and just came out of your bedroom! How can I not assume things?!
CHARLOTTE
I can explain that. He only gave them to me because I got shot.
LUCKY
Charl--
For the last time; I didn't lie to you! I just didn't want you to get jealous like you do.
LOLA
How can you say that?! For God's sake, Lucky, she's wearing your clothes and just came out of your bedroom! How can I not assume things?!
CHARLOTTE
I can explain that. He only gave them to me because I got shot.
LUCKY
Charl--
Before Lucky could warn her, Charlotte opened the pajama top to show the healing but still open wound. Lola's peach skin suddenly seemed to turn green as she covered her mouth and ran to the bathroom. The door slammed behind her and Charlotte gave a short but satisfied smile.
CHARLOTTE
I hope she doesn't--
LOLA
(screams)
OH MY GOD!!
CHARLOTTE
--looks in the trash.
I hope she doesn't--
LOLA
(screams)
OH MY GOD!!
CHARLOTTE
--looks in the trash.
The vomiting was more violent know, but Charlotte knew that Lucky wouldn't be able to hear it through the door. Vampire hearing wasn't always a good thing.
LUCKY
She can't stand the sight of blood and guts.
CHARLOTTE
And she's dating you? (short chuckle) Have fun with that.
LUCKY
She's not really my girlfriend.
CHARLOTTE
(raises an eyebrow)
Would she be mad if she heard that?
LUCKY
(shrugs,then smiles)
Probably.
CHARLOTTE
Where did you meet her? Cheerleading camp?
LUCKY
Don't give me that. She's legal. I met her at a vampire rights group.
CHARLOTTE
Groupie?
LUCKY
Event planner.
CHARLOTTE
Ah.
LUCKY
What?
CHARLOTTE
You can't be serious, Lucky. I mean, does she write down her "events" in crayon?
LUCKY
I didn't say we were serious. See, this is why I don't tell you about the people I go out with.
CHARLOTTE
If I were you, I wouldn't tell anyone period. I've see you with enough malibu barbies to choke myself with.
LUCKY
You know what they say, "Blondes have more fun".
CHARLOTTE
I bet. So why didn't you tell her I was a woman?
LUCKY
Because she'd want to meet you.
CHARLOTTE
(rolls her eyes)
Oh thanks.
LUCKY
You know what I mean. You're always so...harsh on them.
CHARLOTTE
How old is she?
LUCKY
Twenty-one.
CHARLOTTE
You really want to be with someone that was just learning how to walk when you were learning how to drive?
LUCKY
This is what I'm talking about. You're twisting things to make it sound perverse.
CHARLOTTE
No, I'm not. It's the truth. She's way too young. You're supposed to take your age, divide by two, then add seven. That's the rule.
LUCKY
Then you do it with your age.
CHARLOTTE
(smiles)
Don't have to. I don't date, but I'll be fair. If I date, I promise not to date anyone younger than 500 years old.
She can't stand the sight of blood and guts.

The two stop talking when they hear the bathroom door open. Lola walks back up to Lucky.
LOLA
I suppose we can talk about this later tonight. (kisses Lucky's cheek) Call me. It was nice meeting you, Charlie.
CHARLOTTE
Likewise.
I suppose we can talk about this later tonight. (kisses Lucky's cheek) Call me. It was nice meeting you, Charlie.
CHARLOTTE
Likewise.
Charlotte watches Lola leave and looks at the glittered lettering on the back of Lola's shorts. "Juicy" it said. It was enough to make Charlotte want to gag. If she could've, she probably would of. Lucky locked the door after Lola walked out, then turned back to Charlotte.
LUCKY
Please be nice to her. Most women aren't like you. They get jealous. You and I can do a lot that other people don't do.
CHARLOTTE
Like what?
Please be nice to her. Most women aren't like you. They get jealous. You and I can do a lot that other people don't do.
CHARLOTTE
Like what?
Lucky pours himself a cup of black coffee and a cup of blood for Charlotte. He sits next to her.
LUCKY
Like sleep in the same bed and it not be sexual or see each other in the shower and not freak. Women don't understand the relationship between you and me.
CHARLOTTE
So I'm holding you back from keeping a girlfriend?
LUCKY
No! I'd pick you over some chick any day. I trust you with my life.
CHARLOTTE
But you don't trust me when I tell you not to date these bimbos in the first place.
LUCKY
You sound like my mother.
CHARLOTTE
Good. Angela is a smart woman.
LUCKY
If you two had your ways, I'd be married to some strict, no fun, broad. Hell, my mother would probably make me marry you if she could get some grandkids out of the deal.
CHARLOTTE
What?
LUCKY
Oh yeah, my mother went there. I guess a pulse is optional for her too.

(ADDED OCTOBER 16, 2010)
CHARLOTTE
(smiles)
I'm going back to bed. Wake me when the sun goes down.
(smiles)
I'm going back to bed. Wake me when the sun goes down.
Charlotte heads back to the bedroom and puts Lucky's gun back under his pillow. Lucky walks into the room and grabs Charlotte by the waist as she tries to get in the bed. He weighs her down and lies on top of her. He rests his head on her back.
CHARLOTTE
(laughs)
What are you doing?
LUCKY
I saw the monkey on your back was taking a break so I'm filling in.
CHARLOTTE
You're an idiot.
(laughs)
What are you doing?
LUCKY
I saw the monkey on your back was taking a break so I'm filling in.
CHARLOTTE
You're an idiot.
Charlotte turns over and Lucky straddles her. She looks up at his now serious face.
LUCKY
I don't want you to be mad at me. You're my best friend.
CHARLOTTE
I'm your only friend.
LUCKY
All the more reason for me to try and keep you around. Do you want me to dump her? It's not serious. You know how I am over blondes in really tight clothes.
CHARLOTTE
I'm not mad. You can date who you want, when you want. It doesn't matter to me.
LUCKY
Bullshit. Tell me what's wrong, Charlie.
CHARLOTTE
(looks away)
I don't know. I guess...I guess I'm just a little jealous.
LUCKY
You're still my number one.
CHARLOTTE
Not jealous like that. I just envy how you can date.
LUCKY
You can date.
CHARLOTTE
When I date, I only get two types of guys; the ones that think vampires are freaks, and the ones that think I'll turn them so they can "share my gift".
Lucky rolls off of her and lies beside her. He puts his hand on Charlotte's stomach and rubs it gently.
LUCKY
I never thought about that. I'm sorry, Charlie. (pauses) You know, the people at the vampires' rights groups seem nice. Why don't you come with me and Lola to a meeting? You may meet someone that's sincere.
CHARLOTTE
You don't think Lola would mind a third wheel?
LUCKY
She's all about helping vamps. Why not help a vamp find love?
CHARLOTTE
Nothing is worse than a blind date.
LUCKY
Yes there is.
Lucky sits up and faces Charlotte. He pulls his bottom eyelids down while sticking his thumbs in his mouth. He rolls his eyes up. Spit rolls out of his mouth and down his hands.
LUCKY
(sings)
I'm Lucky, the ugly ducky. And I have a face that only Charlie can love.
(sings)
I'm Lucky, the ugly ducky. And I have a face that only Charlie can love.
Charlotte laughs and covers her eyes for a moment with her hand. She watches Lucky and shakes her head as he sings and bounces on the bed with spit still on his hands.
CHARLOTTE
I think your mother dropped you on your head as a child.
I think your mother dropped you on your head as a child.
Lucky stops singing and wipes the spit on his hands on his pants. He smiles.
LUCKY
I'll let you get some sleep. (kisses Charlotte's cheek) Remember what I said.
I'll let you get some sleep. (kisses Charlotte's cheek) Remember what I said.
Lucky gets up and leaves the room. Charlotte moves to her side of the bed and falls asleep. Charlotte dreams that she's lying on a large, wooden board with people chanting her name. She sees Lucky in the crowd, smiling at her. She lifts her hand out to him when she realizes her hand is chained. She begins to panic. The board is lifted and Charlotte can see the sun peeking over the horizon.
CHARLOTTE
(screams)
Lucky!! Help me!
LUCKY
It's okay. You won't burn. Isn't this what you wanted?
(screams)
Lucky!! Help me!
LUCKY
It's okay. You won't burn. Isn't this what you wanted?
Lola walks up next to Lucky.
LOLA
We'll let you down as soon as we show you that you're cured.
We'll let you down as soon as we show you that you're cured.
Charlotte can feel her feet start to burn.
CHARLOTTE
I'm burning! God, please! Lucky!
LUCKY
Trust us. You're cured.
I'm burning! God, please! Lucky!
LUCKY
Trust us. You're cured.
Charlotte breaks free of her chains and falls to the ground. She can feel her skin burning. The crowd captures her in a net and she struggles.
LUCKY
Stop it! You'll burn!
CHARLOTTE
No I won't! Get away from me!
Stop it! You'll burn!
CHARLOTTE
No I won't! Get away from me!
Charlotte pushes Lucky with all her might and when she hears glass breaks, she wakes up and finds herself on the bedroom floor. She opens her eyes and hisses at the sun's blinding light. Lucky pulls the tangled bedsheets back over her and carries her into the bathroom. He sits her down on the toilet and shuts the door. Charlotte, still dazed and confused, sticks her head out from the sheet.
CHARLOTTE
What happened?
LUCKY
(catches his breath)
The curtain rod broke. I heard you screaming that you were burning but you kept fighting me when I was trying to keep the sheet on you.
CHARLOTTE
I'm sorry. I was having a nightmare.
LUCKY
No shit.
What happened?
LUCKY
(catches his breath)
The curtain rod broke. I heard you screaming that you were burning but you kept fighting me when I was trying to keep the sheet on you.
CHARLOTTE
I'm sorry. I was having a nightmare.
LUCKY
No shit.
Lucky turns the cold water on in the shower and holds his bloody arm underneath it. Charlotte sees it and quickly stands.
CHARLOTTE
God! I'm so sorry.
LUCKY
It's okay. It's not deep. I'm not hurt.
CHARLOTTE
Still...
LUCKY
So what were you dreaming about?
CHARLOTTE
Being burned.
God! I'm so sorry.
LUCKY
It's okay. It's not deep. I'm not hurt.
CHARLOTTE
Still...
LUCKY
So what were you dreaming about?
CHARLOTTE
Being burned.
Charlotte looks down at the burned flesh on her feet and watches as it heals itself. She sighs with relief. Lucky touches her face gently with his good hand.
LUCKY
You all right?
CHARLOTTE
How long until sundown?
LUCKY
A few hours. You weren't asleep long. I'll get the curtain rod fixed as soon as I can.
You all right?
CHARLOTTE
How long until sundown?
LUCKY
A few hours. You weren't asleep long. I'll get the curtain rod fixed as soon as I can.
Lucky hears the phone ring through the bathroom door.
LUCKY
Damn, let me get that.
Damn, let me get that.
Lucky shakes his wet arm, wraps a towel around it, then leaves the bathroom. Charlotte turns off the shower for him. Lucky walks into the bathroom.
LUCKY
That was Sunshine. A vampire was burned at the stake.
That was Sunshine. A vampire was burned at the stake.
Ext.> Lily Pond Cemetery> New York> Night
Lily Pond Cemetery was on the outskirts of the city. Everything that had grass on the property was. As they pulled up in Charlotte's car that night, she thought about how this concrete world seemed to grow up around her. She remembered the better times of dirt roads and horse drawn carriages. Even after all these years of air-conditioned cars and homes, Charlotte still loved the fresh air to hit her face. She glanced over at Lucky and thought how unlucky he was to never have experienced those things. He would've been a fine gentlemen.
LUCKY
Thinking about how handsome I am?
CHARLOTTE
(smiles)
Always. Even in a cemetery with a burnt corpse we have to investigate.
LUCKY
(laughs)
That's my girl.
Thinking about how handsome I am?
CHARLOTTE
(smiles)
Always. Even in a cemetery with a burnt corpse we have to investigate.
LUCKY
(laughs)
That's my girl.
Charlotte laughed. Even in times like these, Lucky could always keep spirits up. He was her better half. Professionally speaking, of course. Charlotte pulled up behind Captain Sunshine's BMW on the gravel road. She purposely stopped hard so the dust of the road would rush up and stain Captain Sunshine's car. She caught the Captain's face and saw that she was yelling. She was at the car by the time they got out.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
Keep pushing your luck, Charlotte.
CHARLOTTE
I thought I saw a squirrel.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
(frowns harder)
Next time run the goddamn thing over. Come on, everyone is ready to go home.
Keep pushing your luck, Charlotte.
CHARLOTTE
I thought I saw a squirrel.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
(frowns harder)
Next time run the goddamn thing over. Come on, everyone is ready to go home.
Charlotte looked around and saw uniformed cops that she hadn't realized were there. She hadn't seen any other cars as she drove up. Charlotte opened her mouth to ask, but the Captain stopped her.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
The cars are further down the road. The grounds keeper house is down there.
LUCKY
He hear what happened today?
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
No, as a matter of fact, he didn't hear anything on any day. He was born deaf. It was hell reading all of the post it notes. But, feel free to question him again.

Captain Sunshine led them to the corpse. Lucky pulled a small flashlight out of his jacket pocket and flashed it on the victim. Charlotte looked up at the burnt corpse, still chained to the slab of wood.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
The wood was coated with some kind of flame retardant. Why?
CHARLOTTE
They most likely planned to use it again.

CHARLOTTE

Lucky looked at the crushed grass behind the stake.
LUCKY
The wood was flat on the ground first. I don't see drag marks so it was carried, then placed here. (turns around in the direction of the corpse) They were trying to place it directly into the rising sun.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
A vampire could easily break these chains. Why not break free?

A rush came over Charlotte as she walked closer to the corpse. She felt feelings that were not hers and when she began to speak, she felt like it was someone else talking.
CHARLOTTE
He was a volunteer. They chanted his name and he felt the celebration. He felt...important. He felt like he could face the sun and nothing would happen. The chains were only there to keep telling him to face his fear. By the time he tried to get free, it was too late. The feet were burned so he couldn't get far. They reassured him and reinforced the chains. Someone he loved told him to stay and be burned.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
(looks at Lucky, then back at Charlotte)
How do you know that?
CHARLOTTE
I dreamt about it. I was in his place and--

Charlotte blinked and stopped herself from talking. She gave a quick glance to Lucky, who looked liked he had been watching a car crash. She remembered how soothing Lucky had been in her dream. How safe he had tried to make her feel at first.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
What?
CHARLOTTE
That's all I remember.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
Well I wish you could remember more. It's almost exactly what the other investigative team said. But they didn't know how they got the vamp to stay put while the chains were reinforced or that it was a male. Is it your vampiric ability that tells you it's a man?
CHARLOTTE
No.
Charlotte walks up to the corpse's left hand and breaks off the ring finger. She rubs it in her hand until the ashes are gone. She holds up a plain, gold band.
CHARLOTTE
It's a wedding ring. Too wide to be a woman's wedding ring and it's not flashy at all.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
So we look for the wife of a vampire. (sarcastic) Great.
LUCKY
Actually, since vampire-human marriages aren't legal in this state, they may be new to the city.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
Or he could've been a human when they got married. That's legal. It's not great, but it's a start. Let me know if you find anything else, I'm going to my car. I've seen enough of this corpse today.
What?
CHARLOTTE
That's all I remember.

Captain Sunshine walks away into the darkness. Charlotte turns to Lucky and he is glaring at her.
CHARLOTTE
What?
LUCKY
You know what. You dreamed that I was telling you to get burned, didn't you?
CHARLOTTE
(shakes her head)
It was just a nightmare.
LUCKY
I'm really offended, Charlie. You think I'd kill you!
CHARLOTTE
(scoffs)
I'm already dead.
LUCKY
Don't you try to get cute with me. We'll drop it for now, but I'm not letting this go.
CHARLOTTE
(rolls her eyes)
Fine.
What?
LUCKY
You know what. You dreamed that I was telling you to get burned, didn't you?

Charlotte could see perfectly in the night so there was no need for her to get a flashlight. She listened to Lucky's quite breathing as he searched his own spot of the crime scene. When they were close enough for her not to yell, she broke the silence.
CHARLOTTE
Vampire murders aren't even against the law. Why make us investigate?
LUCKY
You know how Captain Sunshine feels about bad guys getting away. If it's bad in her eyes; it's against the law. Besides, vampire murders may be legal now, but when they pass that law we'll be ready to prosecute.
CHARLOTTE
What about the sires? They should be charged with murder too.
LUCKY
It's not that black and white. Is it really murder if they come back? The law will have to be redone entirely, as well as the definition of "dead". And don't forget that some vampires made the choice.
CHARLOTTE
A stupid choice.
LUCKY
Immortality appeals to a lot of people, Charlie.
CHARLOTTE
We aren't immortal. We're just harder to kill. Do you really think it's a good choice to make? Sure you're harder to kill and stronger, but sunlight can still kill us, holy water burns us permanently. And now they've come up with these "Holy Bullets" with the holy water right there ready to blast into your body and make sure you don't get up.
LUCKY
Well, when you put it that way...
CHARLOTTE
There's no other way to put it. Come on, there's nothing else to find.
LUCKY
Does it get to you?
CHARLOTTE
Does what get to me?
LUCKY
(flashed his light on the corpse)
Him. I read that vampires could sense one another.
CHARLOTTE
Why are you reading about vampires? I thought you'd be sick of them by now working with me.
LUCKY
I like to know things. You certainly don't tell me everything.

I like to know things. You certainly don't tell me everything.
Charlotte got his point and sighed.
CHARLOTTE
I know...we came from the same sire. I can sense it. He's my brother in a way.
LUCKY
(exhales)
Maybe if we find out who he is, we can find out who your sire is.
CHARLOTTE
Trust me, I don't want to know. If I ever do, Captain Sunshine will have another murder on her hands.
LUCKY
You never told me about how you became a vampire.

Charlotte looked at Lucky's serious face and smiled.
CHARLOTTE
That's classified information. If I told you, I'd have to kill you.
That's classified information. If I told you, I'd have to kill you.
Charlotte turned and started to walk back to the gravel road. Lucky knew that Charlotte still thought about her sire. Sometimes, when they interviewed vampire couples, she would be distant. One night after watching a movie about a father and daughter, Lucky could've sworn he saw a tear of blood run down her cheek. Lucky walked up to Charlotte and Captain Sunshine.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
Well?
CHARLOTTE
Whoever did it was really clean. If it was the wife, she wasn't alone. It was done at sunrise and they hadn't been quiet, so they knew the grave keeper was deaf. I doubt they were new to the city. This was planned.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
You two lucked out. Consider your punishment temporarily lifted. I'll need your vampire expertise on this.
Well?
CHARLOTTE

Lucky nods and heads toward Charlotte's car. Charlotte hears the passenger door shut.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
You have something to add, Charlotte?
CHARLOTTE
I would've done the same thing with Fat Louie, Captain.
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
That doesn't make it right. He jumped the gun for personal reasons, not because he thought he had him.
CHARLOTTE
What do you mean?
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
He asked me to pull you both off of the case as soon as Fat Louie told you to start working the stage. He was willing to throw away months of work to save your dignity. He couldn't stand it, but I wanted Fat Louie behind bars. I told him to suck it up and do his job.
CHARLOTTE
And no one asked how I felt?
CAPTAIN SUNSHINE
If you want someone to ask about your feelings, go see a fucking therapist.
You have something to add, Charlotte?
CHARLOTTE

Captain Sunshine turned around and got into her car. Charlotte walked to her car and got in. She started the car, but didn't drive off. She just sat there.
LUCKY
The car doesn't drive itself, you know.
The car doesn't drive itself, you know.
Charlotte looked at Lucky with a face he had never seen on her before. She was a high level of pissed off.
CHARLOTTE
DaVinci did a nude portrait of me, I was a French prostitute, I was a salon girl long before you were even born. I've done things in my past that would make you sick to your stomach and not once did I ever let it get in the way of me doing what I needed to do.
LUCKY
Why are you telling me this?
CHARLOTTE
I lost my dignity a long time ago. I don't want you trying to protect what isn't there.
LUCKY
(leans his head back in his seat)
Sunshine told you.
CHARLOTTE
I've always backed up everything you did. You were the only cop willing to work with me when I first came here. I respected you because I thought you weren't some prejudiced, sexist, pig. I want the same back up and trust that I've always given you!
LUCKY
You don't trust me! You didn't even tell me about your nightmare!
CHARLOTTE
This has nothing to do with you going behind my back with Sunshine! It was a fucking dream! It didn't mean anything!
LUCKY
It obviously meant something or else you would've told me. I don't keep things like that from you! I went to Sunshine because I care about you so forgive me for giving a shit!

Charlotte puts the car in drive and speeds off. The car is silent as she races to Lucky's apartment. She hits 198 as she flies through yellow lights.
LUCKY
Slow down!
CHARLOTTE
What are you going to do? Give me a ticket?!
LUCKY
If I survive. You may be able to go through the windshield but it'll kill me.
CHARLOTTE
Maybe.
Slow down!
CHARLOTTE
What are you going to do? Give me a ticket?!
LUCKY
If I survive. You may be able to go through the windshield but it'll kill me.
CHARLOTTE
Maybe.
Charlotte looks at Lucky and Lucky sees that her eyes seem to be glowing. He quickly put his seatbelt on.
LUCKY
Watch the road!
Watch the road!
Charlotte keeps staring at him, not taking her foot off of the gas. He grabs her arm tightly.
LUCKY
Watch the goddamn road!
Watch the goddamn road!
Charlotte turns her head back to the road and makes a sharp turn that almost puts the car on two wheels. She slams on the breaks in the parking lot of Lucky's apartment. Lucky flies forward but his seatbelt jerks him back.
LUCKY
Charlie--
CHARLOTTE
Get OUT!
Charlie--
CHARLOTTE
Get OUT!
Lucky does as he's told and gets out of the car. He barely shuts the car door well before she pulls off again.
Int.> Charlotte's Apartment> New York> Night
When Charlotte walked into her apartment, she put her keys on a hook next to her door. Her apartment was much bigger than Lucky's; two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining room, a full kitchen, and more. Her apartment was the envy of most houses. Her money was persuasion enough to convince the landlord to remodel the entire top floor of the apartment complex so that no one else lived up there but her. She liked it because it gave her the distance from humans she wanted, and it also made her neighbors a lot safer. She walked into her kitchen and opened her black refrigerator and looked inside. All that filled the space were jars of blood that were labeled with dates and what animal they came from. She sighed and slammed the door of the fridge, leaving her standing in complete darkness. Just before she was about to cry, the light from her home phone lit up and it began to ring. She answered it.
CHARLOTTE
Hello?
LUCKY
We can't not be friends, you know? I mean, we can't let a few stabs in the back and a high speed, potentially homicidal trip down the highway make us split up. You're the only friend I got.

Charlotte took a breath and smiled.
CHARLOTTE
I don't know...Lola looked pretty friendly.
LUCKY
She's not as fun as you. When she gets mad, she gives me the silent treatment. You find more inventive ways to show me you're pissed. How many women can get so pissed that their eyes glow?

Lucky let out a short, nervous laugh and paused. There was a brief silence on the phone.
LUCKY
I'm sorry I was a rat.
CHARLOTTE
Sorry I didn't tell you about the dream.
LUCKY
(sighs)
Why do we fight? I really hate it.
CHARLOTTE
It wouldn't be fun if we always agreed. Hell, Sunshine would love us.
LUCKY
I shudder at the thought.
CHARLOTTE
I do trust you, Lucky.
LUCKY
I know. I just wish you let me in more. I never knew you lived in France.
CHARLOTTE
I was born there. I dropped the accent in the 40s.
LUCKY
What were you like as a human?
CHARLOTTE
I liked flowers a lot, the outdoors. I wanted to have a nursery or a glass house. Something for just me to be around what I loved. (shakes her head) I don't know. It was stupid. I liked a lot of things.
LUCKY
Did you date?
CHARLOTTE
(laughs)
Back when I was human, dating meant marriage intentions. It wasn't anywhere close to how it is now. The men didn't just approach you in some bar or something. A lot of them went through my father and he didn't like men calling on me.
LUCKY
You never told me about your father.
CHARLOTTE
He was a blacksmith. Very sweet.
LUCKY
And your mother?
CHARLOTTE
She died giving birth to me.
LUCKY
I'm sorry.
CHARLOTTE
Don't be. It was long before you were born.
LUCKY
I know that you don't like who you are sometimes, Charlie, but I'm glad you're a vampire. I don't know what I'd be like if I hadn't have met you.
CHARLOTTE
Likewise. Now...get some sleep. It's late and unlike me, you don't have a reason to sleep all day.
LUCKY
Call me tomorrow when you wake up.
CHARLOTTE
I will. Goodnight.
I'm sorry I was a rat.
