A tavern had closed early. Last month had been a smithy. Another had been a merchant shop. Next was supposed to be a seamstress' business.
For all intents and purposes, it was holding no business. The seedy characters that normally haunted its entrance had been chased off. The tables were wiped clean. The chairs were upside down on top of the tables. Only one who knew what to look for would notice the fourth chair was missing from random tables. The candles had been snuffed out and were missing from other tables.
What one couldn't see through the dirty front window would be revealed if one followed the woman hurrying towards the business.
She glanced around to see if there was anyone who could witness her doings. She opened the door when she had made sure the street was clear. Weaving through the maze of tables, she made her way to a back room. A faint light made its way under the door. She looked over her shoulder through the window, checking once again for an observer. Quickly, she entered the room, sacrificing her cloak after the door was closed to conceal the light
The small room was filled with warm bodies and loud voices as everyone glanced at the front of the room. Four candles sat in the corners of the room, barely illuminating the entire area. The candle light glinted off of sweat covered skin and added their heat to the stifling atmosphere. Whispers came from all over, "Did you hear?"
"...Six more..."
"...Actually came into the light..."
A man stood at the stairs that led up to a make-shift stage and listened to the conversations around him. Finally, after a grunt from another, he straightened his clothing and strode to the podium. He smiled as silence immediately fell upon the congregation and cleared his throat. Looking down on the dirty, tired faces of his followers, he felt the need to overthrow the Empire grow as it did every meeting. "I suppose we're all wanting the news on the Masquerader."
A large man with a red face and beard to match laughed and replied in a thunderous voice, "Everyone already knows. The old boy killed a couple more and actually got his hands a little dirty this time. Let's get the show on the road, Camden."
Murmuring burst from the room at this statement.
Camden let the people talk for a few moments before the same red bearded man motioned him to continue. "Quiet!" he shouted and reveled in the complete attention everyone gave him. Not even he was immune to the songs of power, and it scared him late at night when he woke in a cold sweat, dreams of sweet tyranny still clear.
He studied the familiar faces of his followers and glanced at the list resting on his podium. "The Duritanian armies are moving again. My sources say that Condrair, the country they're invading currently, is giving them a harder time than expected. With most of their focus on the invasion, now may be a good time to attack..." He closed his eyes as his audience again spoke over his next sentence. He sighed and ran a hand over his face. He knew this wasn't going to go over well. With a small, tired smile he motioned toward his right hand man, the bearded man, Rostoloff.
"E's not done yet! Quiet down!"
Everyone immediately quieted except for one especially loud voice. "Are you insane, Camden? We are peasants. We have pitch forks and our grandfather's rusted swords if we're lucky. They have sabers, sharpened every night, and guns. Things we'll give out lives to without a proper fight."
Gane Shaebor was one of sickly complexion and had hair greased back with oil that that glinted in the candle light. His thin lips, fixed in a constant sneer, and the overall rat like appearance didn't make him a favorite with any of his fellow Malieans. The fact that he had fallen from a high spot with the king and still held enough of his pride to look down on his fellow peasants made it so that he was hated.
He looked around for support and could only find embarrassed faces averting their gaze. "They've been training for their whole life. While we've only just started. We'll be destroyed and our fellow countrymen will only suffer more because of our foolish actions. There will be other times. Please, let's not rush into something we can't possibly win."
Camden stared at him with cold, green eyes and asked, "What do you suggest, Gane? Shall we wait until we're gray haired and weaker than we are now? Shall we wait until the Duritanians have grown so powerful they own the whole world? Do you really think we'll get these guns? Where are we going to get glittering sabers? We need to move now! Waiting will do nothing. People will still die. We'll still have the disadvantage a month, a year, a decade, a century from now." He raised an eyebrow when a hush fell over the room and finally said in mock surprise, "No answer! Have you disagreed without a plan to replace mine?"
The thin man flinched away from the insult and looked down as to not reveal his anger stricken face. He shook slightly and without warning jumped up as Camden went on. He pulled out a pistol and screamed, "This is for the Empire, you scum!" He raised the weapon above his head and shot two rounds into the ceiling.
Soldiers stormed the building and seemed to ignore the many peasants who flew for the many escapes that had been put in for that very purpose. They were intent on one man and one man only, a man that had eluded their grasp until now: the leader of the last revolutionary group, Camden Bartolv.
Camden Bartolv was stuck on the stage with no way out as soldiers ran toward him and realized this fact while others around him did not. He raised his head and met the eyes of the nearest soldier, daring him to approach. He moved down stairs as the soldier approached to recieve the challenge and jerked his arm away from the man's grasp. "Let me walk away alone," he hissed and straightened his shoulders as the last of his followers, Rostoloff stood in the midst of a sea of armor. "And leave the innocent. You have who you want." He nodded at his right hand and walked out of the door without another word to his guard.

Hey! :)

Ooh! This is getting really interesting. This chapter was definitely just as good as the last two.

Quiet," he shouted and reveled in the complete attention everyone gave him. Not even he was immune to the songs of power, and it scared him late at night when he woke in a cold sweat, dreams of sweet tyranny still clear.

I love that second sentence! It's my favourite bit of the whole chapter. :D I would suggest putting an exclamation mark after "quiet" because a comma doesn't really suggest volume at all.

My resources say that Condrair, the country they're invading momentarily is giving them a harder time than expected.

I'm not sure that "resources" is quite the right word. Maybe you mean sources? Also, "momentarily" suggests that it's only taking a few minutes at most, and though this army may be very efficient I don't think any invasion could be that quick. "at the moment" would make more sense, or I think that "currently" might sound better.

Camden stared at him with cold, green eyes and asked without hesitation

I don't think the "without hesitation" bit's really necessary and it sounds a little odd. We would assume anyway that he hasn't hesitated because you would have said so if he had. "Camden stared at him with cold, green eyes and continued," might work better, or something along those lines.

As Camden went on he shook slightly and without warning jumped up.

It sounds like it's Camden that's jumping up here instead of the unnamed man. Speaking of which, if he's been a part of this community then there's no reason for him to conceal his identity (and if he'd kept his name a secret wouldn't that have made the peasants really suspicious?), so you might as well address him by name, unless it's for some specific plot reason we haven't got to yet.

They were intent on one man and one man only, a man that had eluded their grasp until now the leader of the last revolutionary group, Camden Bartolv.

This is a run-on sentence. It would read better if there was a colon after "until now".

He realized this fact while others around him did not. He raised his head and met the eyes of the nearest soldier. He met him on the stairs and jerked his arm away from the man's grasp.

These three sentences don't flow very well, or at least it feels like that to me. They're all around the same length and have almost exactly the same structure, which makes it repetitive and takes away from the drama of what's happening. Perhaps you could rephrase it a bit to increase the action.

Overall, I'm enjoying this story more and more. :smt003 This chapter furthered the plot well and I can't really think of any more general things to critique. Sorry! XD

I'm looking forward to seeing more of this :)

Hi Meg, thanks for the request! :)
So here's the review!

"Did you hear?" "Six more." "Actually came into the light."

I think you should put these in separate lines.

I don't really feel like nitpicking much because I don't want to look that deeply so I'm sorry >.<
But, I do have a few things I'd like to mention anyway. First of all, I agree that this chapter wasn't as exciting as your previous one but then again you need to get some information across to the reader so sometimes these boring are needed but the trick is to make even the lamest and slowest parts interesting and gripping. With the descriptions that you had going here was enough to capture my interest because it was well written. Also, I think you had some major improvements on this piece, especially with grammar and all, good job! I could definitely see the difference and it made me happy :3
Now, I do think you mentioned many different characters in here and the names became a little confusing, like it was too many people in one short chapter and I want to get to know them a little more. So in order for me to memorize them, I suggest you give them unique personalities or descriptions that can make me see the difference in each character.
Phew, putting all that aside I think you finally have some nice plot building going on and I can't wait until they find out the Masquerader is a chick! XD
Keep writing,

~Shear

Thanks for your post, guys. Just as a heads up, I plan to go into more description on the characters at a later chapter. I'll try to do that soon.

Simple and pure awesomeness. (is that even a word? Probably not.)

I can't believe Gane Shaebor *growls with anger*. How dare he! *DeadEnds shakes her head in disbelief*
After everyone had left except for Rostoloff who stood, staring at the open door, a single shadow peeled away from the building and followed the troop.

Thank goodness for the Masquerader! He/She'll make sure to get Camden back *I hope*.

So far, I really like the characters. Camden is probably my fave so far. :) Could he and the Masquerader be related, since they both have green eyes? At first, I thought they were the same person. But at the end you said "a single shadow peeled away from the building and followed the troop." So he can't be the Masquerader, and plus he - I mean she - is a girl. Hm, interesting... So much mystery. Love it.

I'm glad you made it realistic with the peasants have pitch forks and their grandfather's rusted swords - if they were lucky. I would have never thought that much into how poor the peasants were and how few that had real weapons. Great job.

The one thing that sort of bugged me in this was:
He smiled as silence immediately fell upon the congregation and cleared his throat.

I don't really think that 'congregation' really fits. You're using the word right but when I read 'congregation', I thought of church.

Overall, each part of The Masquerader is better then the last. And I'll be sure to read the next part as soon as I can. :D

Keep Writing!!

Hi again, megsug!

Mmm, I'm finding less and less to critique as I go on! A very good sign... ;)
I really loved this installment. I adore your description of Gane and I was riveted as the action unfolded. One nitpick - muskets are quite large. Could Gane really have had one on hand that entire time without anyone noticing? Maybe change the weapon from a musket to a pistol?
You also have a few spelling mistakes, but those are easily found and corrected.

Anyways, I can't really do a detailed review at the moment, but rest assured, this chapter half was awesome!

Hi Meg :D Just thought I should let you know that I'm completely up to date with your novel now, as I've read it all and it's brilliant. There were a few things I noticed throughout your novel that I'll try and stretch through the rest of my reviews, so each review has something relevant to each chapter. Here's the first thing:

1) Your chapters are very short and a lot of things happen in those few words. So (and this is only a suggestion), I think that maybe a lot of your paragraphs can be bulked up. I know PinkShearWater was talking about how you used descriptive language maybe too much, but I really love descriptions. I read every single word because I enjoy reading thick books with tons of descriptive language. I guess you've just got to know what to describe. In the chapter below, for example, you could have described the room. Where was it located? At the docks in a mildew infested warehouse? Did the candles barely illuminate the room? Was there a stale smell of unwashed bodies polluting the air, mixing with the stench of rotting fish? So many things you can add, so many pieces of the picture revealed with a few words. I love description :)

"Quiet!" he shouted and reveled in the complete attention everyone gave him.

This is me just being picky, but unless this guy is a significant character after the betrayal, it might be wise for him to remain nameless?

He pulled out a musket, stripped from a soldier found in an alley and screamed, "This is for the Empire, you scum!"

The story is from Camden's point of view, so he possibly couldn't have known this.

He raised his head and met the eyes of the nearest soldier, daring him to approach. He met him on the stairs as the soldier met the challenge and jerked his arm away from the man's grasp.

"Let me walk away from my own house alone," he hissed and straightened his shoulders as the last of his followers, Rostoloff stood in the midst of a sea of armor.

He hosted the rebellion meeting in his personal house? Isn't that a bit of a silly move?

After everyone had left except for Rostoloff who stood, staring at the open door, a single shadow peeled away from the building and followed the troop.

lol you don't have to tie the Masquerader into every single scene. Also. You really need to have a scene where the queen is at court sitting at the head of the table/room and she listens to treaties, new levies etc, but has to watch someone else to give her the signal to say yes or no. Acting the queen, but being a puppet. You keep on saying she's the puppet queen, but besides the next chapter, we never see this in action.

Hey there! (I haven't really read the other reviews, so sorry if I repeat anyone.)

First off, short chapters. I know the other's have mentioned this. At least seemingly suggested more descriptions. Personally, I don't think that's what's needed. At least not most. (Although, just giving a few descriptive words as things happen - nothing over the top, just slipping them in - could help this come alive, though it's pretty alive already.)

What I think is missing is, it can get confusing reading your chapters. Not overly so, but I'm not always sure who a person is or why they're doing what they are. This is also partly due to the fact that sometimes your explanations are awkwardly said or given in ways where I'm not really sure what you mean. For example:

A tavern had closed early. Last month had been a smithy. Another had been a merchant shop. Next was supposed to be a seamstress' business.

"Had closed early" makes it seem like they're knocking off at noon instead of five. So for a while, I was confused as to whether it was out of business or just closed early, or if it just had fewer customers or something. Read through your chapters pretending like you don't know what the heck's going on and see if you think you could follow had someone else wrote this.

And also:

He pulled out a pistol and screamed, "This is for the Empire, you scum!" He raised the weapon above his head and shot two rounds into the ceiling.

When I first read this through, I thought it was Camden that shot the pistol, shouting against the empire. Now I realize it's not. But you need to make sure we know who's doing what - pronouns are great, and sometimes they're all you need, but when you're talking about two people with the same pronoun, unless it's obvious what's happening, it can get confusing. Normally this would be understandable, but you want things very easy to follow - if it takes effort from us, you can never be sure we'll make the effort, and a lot of times we get confused.

But back to my main point, about not having enough information.

the leader of the last revolutionary group, Camden Bartolv.

So they're the last group and he's the leader. We don't really get a feel for that - instead, we get the feel that they were a bunch of townsfolk pulled together last minute to rally together, not anything really organized. A ragtag group.

But if they're the last ones, that's something. There should be a reason why they've lasted this long. What they plan to do. In his speech, you could easily add thing such as "We're the last ones left - if we don't make a stand, and now, who will?" and "We've made it this far! We made it through <insert struggle here> we can do this too!" Okay, bad examples, but I think you've gotten my point, right? And when narrating about Camden, you could briefly mention personal struggles, or inward feelings toward other people. And at the end, when he's captured, mention how he feels hope is lost or something along those lines (though, that's mostly to create the impact I think you want this scene to make.)

There are a lot of quick details you can add here to really make it come to life, to make it more realistic, and to help us follow better.

Of course, you don't want to overdo it, but...

Am I making any sense at all? I feel like I just keep contradicting myself and what I'm writing isn't going to followed. If you have any questions about what I've said, want help figuring something out, or anything at all, post on my wall; I'd love to hear from you.

So, yeah. Thanks for putting up with such a horrible review.

loveness, ultraviolet <3

EDIT: I forgot something that I was going to put first. xD The girl you mention at the beginning: 1) is that the masquerader, and 2) what happened to her? Even if she's not all that important, it's never a good idea to start out with a character like they're the MC of the chapter (which is the feel I got) and then just drop them. If you just wanted a way to bring us into the tavern, I'd suggest being more general, mentioning how you could follow any number of people or something.
