Dont tell me the moon is shining, show me the glint of light on broken glass.
I whined a little and threw my head back as Tathiel flopped around in his tent. It was cold tonight, and I had put on my favorite (well, only) cloak. A patchwork of different shades of black, brown and dark, smokey grey leather, with wide sleeves and a big hood. Warm, and, most importantly, fireproof. Speaking of which.
I plunked down by the entrance and shouted, "I do have a box of matches, Tath, don't make me use them."
Cue a shriek from beyond the canvas.
I snickered and started playing with my igniter, an invention I'd gotten from back home. Swaria... I missed it. Warm, sunny, full of light and heat. I hummed a little melody that had always been played at the apartment building me and Mama stayed at. I kicked at a pebble by my feet and ended up creating a small dust cloud. Silly me. I clicked the igniter again and stared at the flame, how it seemed to flicker around the stars, create a golden glow on the dark navy sheet of the sky.
I pulled my bag closer to me -fireproof leather, of course- and sifted through my equipment. Fire poi? Check. Tight-knit balls? Check. Kerosene, gasoline, and other fuels? Check. A collapsed rod, my batons, and several flammable... things? Check, check, and check.
I was set... now if Tath would just get his pretty boy self set too.

hey, Jude, don't make it bad take a sad song and make it better remember to let it into your heart then you can start to make it better.
Everyone else had left camp, all of the men. Even my father. He'd left me alone with the children and the men and women who could no longer go hunting. The elderly and the sick. I sighed and stood up, pacing. The night was too quiet, but not quiet enough to hear a raid.
I kicked the central pole of my tent and then turned at the sound of tearing canvas. Someone was cutting their way into my tent; I could see the knife. I swore and ran for my weapons, my cloak billowing out behind me. There was swearing behind me as I reached my bow, notched an arrow and turned towards them, bow raised, an arrow ready to be released.
But the man just grinned. I loosed an arrow, but it missed him and suddenly he was in front of me, yanking my bow out of my hands. I reached for the dagger strapped to my thigh, then thought better of it. It wasn't worth the risk. Then, as if he knew, the man reached down and removed the sheathed dagger from my thigh.
I slapped him, but he just laughed and next thing I knew, everything was black.

I was grinning from ear to ear by now. So far, none of us had been killed, we hadn't woken the whole tribe, and phase one of our plan was almost complete. "Aisha, bring me those chains," I whispered through the rip in the canvas.
There was a small bit of clanking, which made me cringe, and Aisha had ducked into the tent, chains in hand. Blake and Alba entered behind Aisha, all of them grinning at least slightly. This was going to be a good night.
I took the chains from Aisha and muttered for Blake to help me get them onto our prisoner properly. I would have prefered to use ropes, they were so much easier and required no key for any shackles. But...ropes were much too risky. Easy enough to escape or cut through if you had a hidden daggar somewhere.
Aisha and Alba both rolled their eyes and shoved past us. I frowned, but they had her bound in a matter of seconds.
I rolled my eyes, trying to hide the fact that I was thoroghly embaressed. "Initiate phase two," I muttered, replacing my let-down look with a grin.
I nodded and grabbed the princess around her shoulders and waist, then tossed her over my shoulder. She started to shriek and thrash, but I held a kerchief soaked in knockout liquid over her nose and mouth until her (rather painful) attempts at escape died off. I exhaled and looked at Tathiel, who nodded towards the rip. I crept out, my body managing to still the chains.
We had one caravan. ONE. And it wasn't really a caravan, more like a rustic, but brightly colored carriage. If it was actually a caravan, Tathiel'd be sleeping in it. But that job was reserved for our new detainee, who I was now unshouldering into the carriage. She fell onto the floor clumsily, and I groaned. Tathiel wanted her in good shape. I gingerly eased her onto her side on the seat, with a tattered, threadbare blanket over her. Eh, good enough.
I eased the door closed and locked a chain around the knob, the other end looped around an ornament on the roof. Locking the padlock and shoving the key back in my pocket, I turned around to face Tath, who was glancing to the tribe and back anxiously.
"She's locked up, and unconscious. She'll be back in an hour, though, we have to move fast." I said softly. He nodded. I patted the one graying horse we had (old Speckles) and held a sugar cube in front of him, walking backwards. He trotted forward a bit, and I held the cube back further. He trotted again. I grabbed a hook, jabbed it through the cube, and slipped to the side. Try as he might, Speckles wouldn't get that cube, but he would move forward.
"Roll out," Tathiel whispered to Alba, who whispered it to Blake, who whispered it to the rest of the band.
Phase two: one part completed.
hey, Jude, don't make it bad take a sad song and make it better remember to let it into your heart then you can start to make it better.
I watched as Old Speckles desperately tried to reach that sugar cube. Poor thing, we've done this to him a million times before, you'd think he'd cute the clue that he wasn't going to catch it.
"Our plan is going nicely so far," I said to particularly no one. Both of my hands were laced and behind my head, my feet carelessly carrying myself forward.
"Yeah," Tath replied gruffly, "as long as nothing goes terribly wrong-"
"You are not going to jinx us with that type of talk," I cut in, giving him a stern look. He rolled his eyes at me and continued forward. Trying to ignore the silence that had fallen down like rain on our small group, I gazed up at the dark blue sky, which was speckled with bright spots of white, light yellow, and light blue. Gazing up into that never ending sky, I even swore I could spot a planet. Mars? Maybe Jupiter? Saturn? Mercury?
"You're day dreaming again," someone off to my left said dully. I looked over and smiled guilty.
Personality: Torren is an old sweetheart. He tries his hardest to treat others with respect and love, even if thye have hurt him in the past. He can be very optimistic, and tries to find light in the worst situations. He is somebody that others can go to when they need somebody to talk to, and he never fails to listen and help if he can. He can usually withstand it if he is being hurt or ridiculed, but if it is somebody else he can't bare it and will step in. If something makes him mad, he will keep it bottled up. Though he rarely spews, things get messy when he does.
Skills: Singin (In his old tribe, he sang at most of their festivals.) He is an expert at playing the Gorn Flute (check below). He is also though to be rather wise and if there's trouble, he knows just how to get out of it. He's a good listener and loves to give out advice. He's also an excellent storyteller.
Weaknesses: He isn't physically very strong of fast. The only weapon he can handle is a bow and arrow and he isn't much good in fights. Though his hearing is still good, his sight is slipping slowly. He can be a tad forgetful every now and then.
Up For Love: Unless somebody's willing to make an old lady, I think not xD
Other: He was taken fourty-two years ago from his tribe, Sorian. Toren has always followed the beliefs and religion of the Sori, and it's what seems to pull him through the really tough times. He also keeps journals--lots of journals--and will write in whatever book he can salvage with whatever he can salvage. The Gorn Flute: A wooden instrunment with a single mouthpiece conntected to three hollowed out pieces of desert reed. (The Sorian grow them and use the stalks for many things). The outer two pieces are about 6 inches long. The right side has seven holes and the left has eight. The center piece is 6 and a half inces long with 9 holes. It sounds like a mixture between flute and clarinet
I walked along the halls, whisling loudly. A guard glowered at me, but I just smiled and dipped my head. Not ever hearing him mutter something about old kooks and their crazy antics was getting me down. I was in much too good a mood for such things. Why was I in a good mood? Well, I can't say that I knew that exactly. I had had a dream that last night you see, a good dream; though I can't recall exactly what it was about.
No matter. I was in a good mood and it was all I could do to focus on my work. I actually didn't know what I was supposed to do, as I had just been moved from the hard, grueling work of building out in the hot sun to the palace. I didn't really have much of a place yet.
One of the servant girls rounded the corner, carrying a steaming tray in her hands. "Good morning Selene," I said, smiling.
She smiled back. "Morning Torren."
Yes, I was well-known around here, with my reputation as the old man you can beat until he's a bleeding pulp and he still manages to get back up with a smile. I wouldn't say it was that drastic, but it was close enough. Rumour had it that even some of the guards had a soft spot for me.
"You know, I've been wandering around for much too long. I have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to be doing in here. No men shouting, barely any whips... I'm lost," I muttered, chuckling.
Tathiel
"That horse needs to go faster," I muttered, crossing my arms. At this rate, we wouldn't make it to where we believed the Lazzans were until noon tomorrow, and we needed the cover of darkness if we were going to complete this mission.
"You're so negative," Aisha muttered, yawning slightly.
I glanced over at her and arched an eyebrow. "I wouldn't be too sure. We need to do this during nightfall, and I don't think the sweetheart back there is going to let us keep her another day."
"She's outnumbered," Aida reminded me.
I shrugged. "Doesn't mean she can't escape. We were sorely outnumbered when we kidnapped her. It just required a bit of stealth. She could escape while we're sleeping, or while we have our backs turned. You never know."
I was praying silently that the horse would grow wings and fly us to the mountains, but of course, no such thing happened. Can't rely on that kind of magic, I suppose. Ah well, as long as the horse didn't fall over dead we'd have at least a chance. I just didn't know if I would be patient enough to wait the extra few hours.
I sighed and dug my hands further in my deep pockets. I drew out my igniter and started playing with it. I rushed my hand through it once, smiled at the warmth, and then pressed the flame into my palm. I laughed almost wildly now, and Tathiel eased my hand away. I pouted, lit the igniter again, and pushed it close to his face. He jumped back.
I'd taught him the more extravagant, complex fire arts. He was pretty... awesome, granted, but I was more fearless. Could be my downfall, but I'd put fire retardants on my hands so frequently, I myself was practically fireproof. I grabbed a guarded flame from my bag and wound up its little cog, then pressed it to my neck, cheek, hand. Warm, but guarded enough so Tath wouldn't freak.
I huffed, turned the flame off, and dumped it back in my bag, to be refilled later. I ran up to the sugar cube and pulled it a little further, gaining some speed. I tugged the rope we tied the sugar cube to farther back, so Speckles would have to run. As he did, I beamed over my shoulder and tied the leather straps around my shoulders, working my arms back and forth a few times until my steel wings caught air, and I lifted.
Tath was grabbing an old cart, tossing Alba on, and yelling at Blake to help him pull it. I smirked and pulled a loop the loop once or twice, then dipped down so I was practically skimming next to the cart.
We had our ways.
hey, Jude, don't make it bad take a sad song and make it better remember to let it into your heart then you can start to make it better.
Nodding towards Terron, I continued down the hall, carrying a basket of laundry on my hip and a tray in my other hand. I hummed a tune too low for anyone to hear. The queen wasn't tolerant of music--or at least she hated it when I sung. I walked into what I called my room, though most of the palace servants slept here, or in the stable or kitchen. It was cramped, but we had gotten used to be around each other. You couldn't really avoid someone and not have to end up sleeping by them at night.
I sat down the basket, glancing around. This was my life. The room was empty this time of day, of course, while everyone was busy working. I touched the necklace around my neck, remembering how I got it. Stolen, but I didn't like to think about it that way. I ha no parents, thus I had to find a home and work somewhere. I came here at an early age, and I've been here since. The queen was like my mother, and my mother never gave me anything to remember her by. I wanted to believe that Queen Zashia didn't care that I had it, but I knew that, if ever she saw it, she'd have my throat for stealing from her. And the ring I took, she never wore it, I wasn't even sure she knew she had it.
I pulled from my thoughts, and walked out, carrying the steaming trey with me.
~Queen Zashia~
I walked down the hall, one foot in front of the other, chin held high, crown tall, the traditional queen walk. One of the servant girls walked by me, and I stopped her, looking her over, eyes cold on her. She never looked me in the eye, a sign she was guilty of something. Or just scared, but I had to assume something was up. Maybe Ignatius knew. I narrowed my eyes, grabbing a piece of cake on a platter off the top of the tray, ignoring the steaming meat.
I smelled it first, then tasted it, making a face as the taste set in. Putting it back on the tray, I glared at her, walking away. I wasn't too hard on that one, she was like a child to me, since she had no parents. I could have yelled, but I didn't, I treated her as a normal servant. She wasn't special. She was dirt to me, as was everyone who wasn't royalty.
Ignatius was coming down the hall, and I walked a little faster to him, smiling.
Hakuna Matata <3 RIP to all my friends who didn’t make it.
(Sorry for not posting, I'm not meant to be online for a while -.- This might be a tad short.)
Ignatius
"My love," I said, as I walked down the hall. She was here no doubt to tell me about some piece of gossip, or that someone was doing something they shouldn't be doing and surprisingly she was always right. Her hair was in a tight bun, as it made her face look all the more fierce. She walked with such precision, that she at times scared me, I wondered what it would be like to read her mind.
"You know that servant child?" She said, sniffing as though something was rotting in the room.
"Selene?" I asked knowing fully well who it was. I made it my obligation to know everything about every single servant in my employ.
"Yes her, I think she's hiding something. She's acting very suspicious. She even looked me straight in the eye today" She said, her eyes narrowing in suspicion.
"Could it just be that you see yourself as much more important than you actually are." I replied.
She whirled around, her eyes lit with anger. "Ignatius, watch your tongue."
I smiled gesturing to the guards to open the doors to the great halls. "It would do you well to watch who you threaten" I whispered, locking arms with her and walking up to the throne. The courtroom silent as a grave, awaiting my every word.
I would be watching that slave girl...
