Chapter 1 You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me

What the problem with going to secondary school is, you have to join some sort of group. People like me are rare, those who belong to no group but go from one to the other. I’m seen as a sort of a chameleon, not belonging anywhere but fitting in everywhere.

Well, that what they’ve come up with. But that’s not really the case, to be honest. They all think they know me, that they have me all figured out. They wish. I just choose not to join one of them, I've been like this for awhile, ever since ...

I sighed as I walked down a corridor in Avery Secondary School.

“Alex!” someone called in an overly bright voice.

I groaned I really didn’t want to deal with Carla today. So, I kept walking down the corridor and ignored her.

“Alex! Wait up!” she yelled. I sighed; I couldn’t say that I didn’t hear her when she yells like that.

“Yes?” I ask turning around to face her.

She frowns for a few seconds “Really Alex, you should answer me when I call you,” she chastised me, hands on her hips. I stood quiet, waiting for her reason for even looking at me.

“Really, you act like you don’t belong, like you’re not related to me,” she went on, then she turned wide eyed to face me “Or like you’re adopted!” she exclaims.

I glared at her “I don’t try not to fit in, I’m not really related to you and I am adopted, Carla,” I tell her frostily.

She sighs and I wait, tense, my foster sister never spoke to me in school, unless she wanted something.

“Well?” I ask.

“Well what?” she answered looking confused.

I grit my teeth; I hate it when she plays dumb.

“What do you want?”

“What makes you think I want something,” she sounded too innocent.

“Because, you will barely glance at me unless you wanted something from me, darling sister,”

She glares at me “Fine, I need you to do my Biology homework tonight,” she pleaded.

“No.”

“But I have a date with Jonathan Myles, the Jonathan Myles and I really don’t need Miss Hathaway on my back!"

“I don’t care if you had a date with Taylor Lautner, I still wouldn’t do it,” She's going out with Jon! What the hell!

“Please!”

“No.”

“But, I thought you loved me!” she pouted.

“That works on Sam, not me, now go away, I have to get my books,” and with that, I walked away. I didn’t need her whining at me.

Why did all girls worship Jon like he’s a god? He is one of my best friends, my real friends, and I know he hates the attention.

I don’t have many best friends who know me like Jon, I can tell him anything and even though he’s a ‘popular’, he never squeals. For that I am grateful.

What had possessed him to ask Carla out is beyond me. I shake my head slightly; Carla gets excited over such small things.

I reach my locker to find the boy in question was leaning against it casually.

“What’s up Jon?” I ask him.

“Not much, so Carla got to you yet?” he asked teasingly.

I shot him a dark look, and he laughed. It was obvious why the girls of our school loved Jon. He was perfect, tall, slim but not scrawny, blond, slightly tanned and greened eyed. I on the hand see him as only a good friend maybe a brother sometimes.

“What do you have now?” he asked.

“Double history and Science,” I answered looking at my timetable. Jon already knew but he always asked anyway.

“Still can’t get over, it Junior Cert year,” he sighed as we headed for history. Several girls glared at me and smiled at Jon. I grinned at him as he grimaced.

“Avoiding the fan club?” I teased him.

He groaned and buried his head in his hands dramatically. I burst out laughing; only Jon could make me laugh nowadays. Many boys looked our way surprised to see me grinning and laughing. I’m known as doom and gloom girl by most of our year.

We arrived in history, as Jon and I sat down in our seats, beside each other; we discovered that Mr. Keane was out. I sighed and took out the assigned work, I enjoyed history but I preferred the way Mr. Keane did it.

Why’d you ask my sister out? I wrote on a note and I passed it to Jon.
She asked me out and I couldn’t say no, she had the puppy eyes look on. He wrote back.
I grimaced at that. Stupid, manipulative sister I thought.
Are you going to date her?
No, I’ll let her down gently, before I go home.
Good it would be soooo weird; she’d act like you’re going marry her!
Yuck, no offense to your foster sister, but I’d rather not marry her.
I thought so, we’d better go back to our work or Ms. May will find us passing notes and give us detention!
Ya! Ha ha my mom would have a field day!
And mine along with her. Oh crap Ms. May is staring at us act natural.
Did you know her first name’s Maura?

I stared at him and he grinned at me, how does he know this stuff?

“Would you like to share something with the class, Jonathan and Alex?” Miss May asked sweetly, leaning over our desk.

“Our work? I asked feigning confusion. Miss May frowned and stared at me hard. I had the note stuffed into my fist so she wouldn’t see. I kept my hands under the table. She looked at our work and sighed, she loved giving out to people. I smiled at her innocently.

“Continue working,” she sighed. I nodded and smiled at Jon when she wasn’t looking. I was what Jon would call a goody two shoes around the teachers. That made me less likely to get in trouble, that’s why Miss May didn’t ask me to show her my hands.

Jon was staring at me mouth open, I grinned at him. If it had been him, Miss May would have asked him to show her his hands and we’d have gotten detention. Ah, the joys of being a teacher’s pet.

‘Cod fish’ I mouthed at him. He closed his mouth quickly and I smirked at him. I returned to my work still smirking, while ignoring the stares and glares I was getting. I finished my work quickly and started to draw on my notebook.

I felt someone tap my shoulder behind me and I turned around. Stacie Myles stared at me and handed me a note. I glanced down. Give to Jon was written on it. I turned around and rolled my eyes. Miss May had gone out to get a cup of tea, so I didn't have to worry about getting caught. I put the not on Jon's copy and he glanced at me. I glanced behind me at Stacie and Jon sighed. I watched as opened the note, read it then stuffed it in his pocket. Not the first time I've seen him do that.

Jon and I normally don't sit beside each other, a few times maybe but not all the time. I don't like the popular crowd so I tend to stay away from their crew, which includes Jon.

The rest of the day passed quickly, I sighed when the final bell rang. I jumped up and stuffed my books into my bag and raced for the door.

“Someone’s in a hurry,” Jon said beside me. I yelled and jumped.

“For heaven’s sake Jon you nearly scared me to death,” I yelled at him. His eyes flashed.

“Not funny Grace,” he said quietly.

“What?”

“You dying.”

I looked at him, he was deadly serious. I stared at him for another few minutes.

“I was just kidding, no need to go all serious on me,” I told him crossing my arms. I realised we’d stopped walking.

“But I am serious, you dying is not a cool thought for me,” he replied stiffly. He looked angry and pissed, I was just messing.

"Jon, what's your deal, seriously?"

"I just ... don't like the thought of you - "

"Then don't think about it!"

"Well maybe I won't if you don't mention it!"

“Look, can we just drop it, I’m sorry I spoke,” I told him, defeated. I didn’t mean to insult him or anything. I started to walk away when he caught my wrist.

“No, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have over reacted, that was stupid, and you would never seriously mean that.” He apologized; he gave me a pleading look.

“Fine, you’re forgiven,” I huffed crossing my arms, pretending to be bothered, it’s funny how we make up so fast.

Jon started laughing but he stopped suddenly.

“People are staring” he murmured to me. I looked around, he was right; we were getting a lot of stares. I stared back and they all looked hastily away. I snorted, idiots.

“Come on, you have something to say to my sister,” I grinned at him and I pulled on his arm. He blanched and I laughed. “You aren’t afraid, are you Jon?” I asked him innocently.

He just glared at the wall behind behind me and muttered “Let’s just get this over with,” under his breath. I laughed out loud and grinned at him. He sighed and I dragged him over to our lockers. Carla and some of her friends were gossiping close by. Carla looked over at me and smiled, and then she spotted Jon and blushed.

I frowned, how much did Carla actually like Jon? I was worried that their break up (even though they weren’t even going out but to Carla it would seem like that) would really hurt her. Jon must have noticed too because he looked guilty.

“Are you sure I should do this?” Jon whispered in my ear. I looked at Carla out of the corner of my eye; she looked shocked, her friends were whispering furiously, ah crap. I gave him a sad look.

“What do you want Jon?” I asked him. He sighed and looked away. As much as Carla annoys me, I do really love her and I don’t want to see her get hurt. But, I didn’t want Jon to do something he didn’t want to out of guilt.

“I don’t want to hurt her” he whispered. I nodded in understanding.

“But would it be better to lead her on and not enjoy being her boyfriend?” I asked him softly, I knew that Jon wouldn’t enjoy being Carla’s boyfriend; he doesn’t see her that way. He gave me a pained look and started towards Carla. I dreaded her reaction.

Carla smiled brightly at Jon and caught my eye; she glared at me and looked a little smug. Her expression was like a slap in the face as I realised, she thought I was going to steal him away from her. I had no doubt that she would blame me for what was coming. I turned around and opened my locker. I was putting away my English homework when I heard Carla’s cry of despair, I flinched at the sound. I hate seeing or hearing others hurt.

“But why?!” she exclaimed.

“I’m sorry, Carla, but I really don’t think that a relationship between us would work out,” I sighed, Jon was always a gentleman in situations like this.

I turned around and stood up, leaving my books and bag where they were. I could see that the situation was going to get out of hand soon and people were starting to stare. I knew I had to act quickly, or something bad was going to happen.

“Hey, Jon,” I called as I walked over. Carla and her friends (if you would call them that, they remind me more of sheep; they all must be identical) either frowned or glared at me. “Are you still going to my house?” I continued.

Jon gave me a look of thanks and said “Of course,” even though we hadn’t actually planned it. There was a large chance that Carla would go to her friend’s house, so Jon could relax. Carla gave me a glare. I mentally slapped myself; she thought I was stealing him from her.

“Are you two going out?” asked one of Carla’s friends; Sarah’s her name if my memory served me correctly. I laughed at her as did Jon.

“No, we’re just good friends,” I replied. They all narrowed their eyes, like I said they all have to be the same.

“But, you guys don’t hang out much and Jon never comes to our house,” accused Carla, tears were streaking her face.

“Yes, he has, you just haven’t been home, ask mom and dad or even Sam if you don’t believe me,” I argued. I regretted it instantly, she looked murderous.

“Come on, Lex.” Jon pulled on my arm. I kept staring at Carla, there was going to be war when we got home. I let him pull me away never taking my eyes off Carla and her ‘friends’.

I finally turned around and walked towards my locker, Jon went to his which was five away from mine. Carla walked over and opened hers, which was the one right beside Jon’s. Carla’s last name is Michaels but I said I wanted to keep my own name.

I saw Carla wipe her face with a tissue out of the corner of my eye. I sighed and closed my bag. I mentally checked if I had all the homework, when I was sure I walked over to Jon.

“You ready?” I asked him, he nodded and gave me a sad look.

“I’m sorry,” he said sadly. Someone stopped behind us; I glanced over my shoulder, Carla and Sarah. Carla suddenly looked smug. I ignored them and faced Jon.

“Sorry for what?” I asked him, I started to walk again and he followed me, unfortunately so did Carla and Sarah.
Jon looked pained.

“For getting you and Carla into a fight,” he whispered, he looked afraid I would yell at him or something. I rolled my eyes at him. He's always been like this, afraid about upsetting me.

"Seriously Jon, you don’t have to be sorry, it won’t kill me or her,” I smiled at him, he looked relieved. “Worry wart,” I teased him, he pressed his hand to his heart.

“You wound me,” he said dramatically. He clasped his hand over his heart like I'd shot him. “Thou shall pay for thy insult,” he threatened I could see the amusement in his eyes.

“Me thinks that doth not have the courage,” I quipped. He looked outraged. He lunged for me playfully and I dodged his attack laughing.

“Thou must catch me first, my Lord,” I called as I ran away. I passed my English teacher who stopped me.

She looked really amused “I never thought I’d see the day when two of my students would be racing down the halls yelling at each other in old English, carry on,”

“Many gracious thanks Ms. Crowe,” I bowed slightly then scampered off. I looked over my shoulder to see Jon speeding towards me. I spotted my father outside standing by the car, I ran towards him laughing. I passed many dumbstruck students who stared at me.

I skidded to a stop near my dad. “Help,” I said to him laughing, bent over and slightly out of breath. He raised an eyebrow at me when someone crashed into me from behind. A pair of arms wrapped around me and started tickling my sides, I shrieked with laughter.

“Do you give,” Jon said in my ear.

“I give, I give!” I yelled and he let me go.

I glared at him “You don’t play fair,” I accused.

“Never said I did,” Jon replied grinning. I noticed my dad laughing.

“Damn Jon you got her good,” he laughed.

“All in a day’s work Mr Grace,”

“How many times do I have to tell you? Just call me Chris,”

“Alright then Chris,” he replied still grinning.

“What on earth was that!?” someone said from behind me. It was Carla.

“We were just messing,” I told her.

Carla’s face was slowly going a weird shade of red, she had her hand balled up into fists at her sides. She looked somewhere between a tomato and a beetroot. It was funny.

“Just messing around? Do you have any idea how your little stunt affects my image?” she literally yelled back. I was tempted to tell her that people were staring, but seeing the look on her face I kept my mouth shut.

“Now Carla your sister is entitled to have some fun with one of her friends.” Dad chastised her.

I swear Carla’s eyes nearly bulged out of her head. Crap, I forgot about her obsession with her ‘image’. This was not going to be pretty.

“How about we get in the car, hmm,” I suggested weakly looking at Jon for help.

“Sure, ya, let’s go,” he immediately said.

“Yes, let’s,” Carla agreed slyly. Oh no, this was NOT happening. Carla coming home after

1. Jon breaking up with her (which I’m guessing she blames me for),
2. Me inviting Jon home,
3. Me embarrassing her in front of the sheep,
4. And finally, me embarrassing her in front of the school.
And having me and Jon in plain sight is really going to go well. Not.

She looked right now from the backseat like she was going to have a seizure. Her eyes were bugging slightly and her face was still that shade of tomato/beetroot.

I know what happened doesn’t seem like much, it’s not like I am stealing Jon from her (that would have made matters very hellish indeed) but to her, it’s awful. She’s one of those people who have to have the perfect boyfriend, the perfect friends, the perfect hairstyle, the perfect sibling (which is why she pretends not to know me, get it?) et cetera, et cetera. Basically she and her life must be perfect, she must have never been told that NOBODY’S perfect. Pity, I might have actually liked her.

Phew. That was really, really long! You might want to break it up into shorter chapters or only post parts of it at a time. Otherwise, it's a lot to take in!

Also, the site gets rid of any indenting you had, so you might want to space your paragraphs in the future.

And now onto critique.

First up, dialogue formatting and punctuation! I know, it sounds absolutely riveting, but it has to be done.

In most cases, you'll have a comma after the last word of the dialogue. So, “Say goodnight” she whispered. would be [/i]“Say goodnight,” she whispered.[/i]

And something like She frowns for a few seconds “Really Alex, you should answer me when I call you” she chastised me. would be She frowns for a few seconds. “Really Alex, you should answer me when I call you,” she chastised me. with the period after the first sentence, and the comma before you switch over to the dialogue tag.

Just pick up a copy of your favorite book and make as your favorite authors do.

Also, watch your commas in general. Generally speaking, you use a comma whenever you change from one structure, or when you might need a pause in the flow of things. Again, copying the punctuation of a favorite author is a good idea.

Next, I'd suggest using italics for any of Alex's direct thoughts, and also for the notes she and Jon pass back and forth.

All of those things above will help your reader just sit back and enjoy the story. Which, by the way, is really funny--it's been a while since I've actually laughed out loud over a written piece, but you had some really great lines (and the stuff with the old English? I've done that so many times myself that I couldn't stop smiling while I read it.)

Anyway, I just gave you a lot of things to fix, so I don't want to overload you with other stuff. I hope this helps out! Let me know if you'd like any explanation on anything.

I'm quite jealous. I wasn't that creative at thirteen. XD
You did a good job with introducing the characters, which I like to see. It's hard to get involved in a story if you don't do that, but you did. And the prologue is great, by the fact that it made me decide to read the story. :D

Now, this sentence:
He stared at me while she screamed at me still.

To me, it just doesn't flow. The paragraph mentions a 'he', and you go back to the 'she' and immediately to the 'he' again (if that makes sense). Maybe insert a one-sentence paragraph right before and say, She continued to scream at me. and introduce the next paragraph with, He stared at me.

Now, throughout the chapter, you've a lot of run-on sentences. Generally it's incorrect to join two independent clauses with a comma and no conjunction. For example (I just fetched a random one):
That made me less likely to get in trouble, that’s why Miss May didn’t ask me to show her my hands.

This should be one of the following:
...trouble. That’s why...
...trouble, for Miss May...
...trouble; that’s why...

Keep an eye out for those.

Also, remember that if you have a complete sentence (or no sentence at all) after a section of dialogue, you end it with a period instead of a comma.

“Come on, Lex,” Jon pulled on my arm.

“Come on, Lex.” Jon pulled on my arm.

"No,"

"No."

The dialogue itself needs a little work. You have a lot of facial expressions (good) and 'So-and-so said adverb-ly' sentences (okay), but you barely have any body language. Characters are more believable and more emotional if you express their feelings by something they do, and not just saying what their tone of voice is. But be careful not to overdo it, as well.

This is just me, but I don't really find it pleasing when a character, meaning Jon, is described as 'perfect' (less believable), but you don't have to change that if you don't want, since in first-person it's more acceptable. xD

Overall, it's a pretty good first chapter, and a good way to introduce everything. Keep going; I like it.

P.S. The old English bit was funny. :D

Oh my word I love this! And it is NOT really long at all! The people on this website have an obsession with short chapters. But, really it just looks long because it's not put in sections, like pages, it's all in one long line. And also, people don't want to take the time reading a lot (even I am guilty with this) So I think that your chapter is fine. But it might help you get more viewers if you cut the chapter a bit. Like, post it twice, one post being chap.1, part 1 and another being chap.1, part 2. That way you'll still have your nice, long chapter and you'll have more reviews. Couldn't get any better, eh?

Anyway, now that I've got that all cleared up, time for the review. Well, like I said in the first sentence, I love this. I don't see anything that needs to be changed. You have a great writing style, good gramar, and a good plot. It's like the triple threat. (lol) You really just gave me something enjoyable to read, so thank you.

I really want to read more, so post more! (or I will find out where you live, come to your house, and threaten you[not really])

I agree with Dragonet. That wasn't long at all! I breezed through it in four minutes :D I loved it. I sounded casual, and the conversations weren't at all forced. Not that it was anything, but you did have several grammar errors that I can't seem to find anymore... hm... but I do remember that you should have a colon after "after" when you were talking about how Carla agreed to go home with Jon and Alex.
To me, the thing that I thought was the best about your story, although it was a little strange and I didn't completely understand it, was how someone gets shot. The preface, although short, caught my attention. Maybe it should be longer... but I completely understand if you just want this to be something short and mysterious.
Hm... Let's see....
I loved the dialogue because it's just natural and they all flow smoothly. I'm also quite intrigued by the idea that Alex is adopted. I hope you'll expand further on that, because (maybe it's just me) it catches my attention and my sympathy (or pity) for that character. I really hope you'll continue with a Chapter 2 soon, because this is just great.
How's Life? :D

Hey, Bookgirl. :D

It was getting harder to ignore, the need to use my powers.

When I read your prologue, it was tough to tell who was talking/why/what was going on. I suggest you lengthen it, and possibly switch it to third person, unless it is Alex talking. :) Currently, it sounds more like a teaser than a prologue, but that may just be me. :)

You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me

I was confused by this; I couldn't tell if this was a chapter heading or an ending thought to the prologue.

Why did all girls worship Jon like he’s a god? He is one of my best friends, my real friends, and I know he hates the attention.

I suggest you lengthen this paragraph, possibly with thoughts and other details. :)

He was perfect, tall, slim but not scrawny, blond, slightly tanned and greened eyed.

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've always been fond of blond hair and green eyes!!!!!!! :D Just wanted to say that. :D

“Our work? I asked feigning confusion. Miss May frowned and stared at me hard. I had the note stuffed into my fist so she wouldn’t see. I kept my hands under the table. She looked at our work and sighed, she loved giving out to people. I smiled at her innocently.

Lengthen out this classroom scene; there are tons of things that make up Alex's personality, and this is one. I know it can be very boring to write (I totally sympathize), but it's still important. ;)

“Not funny Grace,” he said quietly.

The tension you wrote here is very good. It helps the readers expect something. The only thing is, it's left hanging, kind of. I mean, Alex doesn't have any concerns about it, which seems odd, since- to me, the reader- it looks like something very unusual for Jon.

“Looks like we’ve attracted a crowd,” he murmured to me. I looked around, he was right; we were getting a lot of stares. I stared back and they all looked hastily away. I snorted, idiots.

Stares, yes. A crowd... a little far-fetched. I think sticking with people giving them weird looks is just fine. :)

He just glared at me and muttered...

Be careful with your descriptions. Here, it sounds like he's suddenly angry at Alex. I suggest you have him glare at something else. That can always be amusing. XD

I frowned, how much did Carla actually like Jon? I was worried that their break up (even though they weren’t even going out but to Carla it would seem like that) would really hurt her.

I'm really glad you gave this aspect to Alex. It's really sweet that she actually cares about her family, even though they're not on the best terms.

After this point, you started losing my interest, partly because it goes on and on with Jon. That's not bad, necessarily, but we still need other things to happen to her. I really like how you've developed their relationship, but what about her other relationships? What about her likes, interests, etc.? Right now, the story is just about the relationship between the two, and it's hard to see where the story is going because of that. I suggest you think about where you want Alex to go, plot-wise, and orient Jon and her relationship to go that way. Other than that, keep writing! I want to see where your story goes. :D PM me if you need anything. :D :D :D

Hello!

I read the preface and some of chapter 1 in this, and spotted a few issues.

The first thing that stood out to me was how the situation seemed just a bit illogical. What is stopping the MC from just killing the woman who's about to shoot her? I'd think there's some backstory that allows for this, but remember this is the preface. We do not see that backstory. After reading the preface, I was wondering why your MC was being the perfect hero and sacrificing herself to save her friends, if she had magic that would let her stop this person. With just the preface, that really doesn't make sense to me. It leaves me walking away thinking your MC must very silly not to be using her magic, which is not the impression you want to give. Readers will probably get turned off and think she's lacking some common sense (if you don't explain her logic properly).

Which leads me to my next point about character: She reads like a Mary Sue. A Mary Sue is usually a perfect character, but it can also mean a few other things. The list I've taken for your character is: very high morals, the leader everybody looks up to, fitting in everywhere while being an outcast, and sacrificing herself without a second thought.

The high morals and sacrificing are similar enough to put them in the same vein. The high morals I'm referring to are how she just puts up with abuse for whatever reason (I'm assuming because it's "the right thing to do") and doesn't feel the temptation to do anything against her that's emotion-based. Her magic could be emotion-based, yes, but the fact she controls it perfectly also makes her look like a Mary Sue. It means her morals outweigh her human side, which needs a fair chunk of explanation. Because human nature tends to be powerful, there needs to be some sort of reason why she's forcing her morals to win.

Also, make that moral an actual fight for her morals to win. Temptations can be powerful and almost constantly surfacing, yet you have one that's easily brushed aside here. Or add some logic behind her actions past "it's the right thing to do." It's human nature to have temptation and eventually give into it. And if they don't give into temptation, they had better have a good reason not to do so. That goes the same for why she's sacrificing herself, which ties into my first point about why she's not using her magic to get away. Why is she so willing? No tears, no pain at leaving them, no real emotion at all that I can see. It makes her seem perfect.

This also applies for the whole story. If she just "does the right thing" for the simple reason it is the right thing, then she's behaving more like a Mary Sue. Yes, it is the ideal, but it is also rather unrealistic without the proper explanation.

On the leader bit: Do people have reason to follow her? Do they follow her without arguing? The answer must be yes for the first question (and be a justified yes) and the answer must be no for the second. Why? Because if the answers don't match up then you have a Mary Sue character. Arguments happen in groups, all groups, no mater how much you get along (in fact, sometimes the fastest way to destroy a friendship is to start working on something together). And leaders usually get put in the position for a reason. It can be a natural, unexplained progression into her being a leader, but it must be a visible progression. Readers must be shown the traits that make her a leader repeatedly for them to buy it. If you just put them in that position, readers will think that the author is just forcing the role of leader onto them for no apparent reason.

And finally fitting in everywhere yet being an outcast. This is usually a sign of a wide range of skill sets, which sets your MC up as being a bit too good at everything to be able to fit into all groups. Ie, it sets her up as not having a real weakness (and no weakness leads to the assumption the character is perfect and Mary Sue is just another name for a perfect character). And the outcast bit implies that people simply don't know what to do with her/they're jealous, which is another Mary Sue trait. I'd rework your chapter 1 opening paragraph so it doesn't make us think she's a Mary Sue right off the bat (your preface also sets your MC up as a Mary Sue, but I'll address my comments about prefaces in a minute).

Your first paragraph really didn't grab me all that much. The first thing I thought was "Mary Sue", as mentioned above, but there also wasn't all that much to make me curious about what was going on. Okay, so the MC's in Secondary. What else? What makes this special? You give some reasons, with the whole drifting between groups thing, but because that didn't give me a good impression on the character and didn't give me another lead to make me curious, I didn't want to keep reading.

I'd take a look at this article on beginnings, paying special attention to the section titled "Paragraph-Long Openings," which is what you have here. In that section, I give an example from the book "The Swan Kingdom." Despite the tone of the paragraph being a bit whiny, it caught my attention. The very first line of the book is "you probably know me already" and the rest of the paragraph goes on to explain why we probably do. This makes you curious about who she is right at the start. If you know her already, you want to know how you know her.

Looking at your preface, I spot two issues: Point of view and the very fact it is a preface. I'll start with point of view (or PoV) first.

You have a first person narrator. They are going to get shot. And I do not think they are going to die.

This lack of suspense is caused by the first person narration. Authors tend not to kill our primary viewpoint characters. Because of this, readers automatically assume a first person narrator will not die. Which means, in your preface, there's no suspense. The question you're dangling in front of our faces is, "Will she live or die?" Thanks to the norm of not killing viewpoint characters, readers aren't going to buy this. The question, instead, should be "How will she get out of it?" If you dangle that question in front of our faces the norm has been taken care of, and readers will once again be interested in what's going on.

Even if she does actually die, you still have the norm to deal with. Characters being saved at the last minute is such a common convention (used for a reason, mind you. Readers tend to dislike the book if the pair of eyes they'd been viewing the world through dies) that readers really expect it. And even if she does die, it's just a bit more tragic if she was almost saved. If you do chose to have her die, I would suggest having a second viewpoint character that readers can attach to after she dies. That way, we'll have a character who's somewhat familiar to read the rest of the story though. This will prevent some of the dislike I mentioned before, but not completely get rid of it.

Now, onto the whole concept of a preface. 99.9% of the time, you don't need it. In fact, it can detract from the book overall if you have one. In this case, the preface makes me wonder why I should keep reading if the MC eventually gets shot. I'm not curious as to what the ending will be— thanks to the preface I think I know the ending. Either she gets saved and there's the usual mad dash to save the day, or she dies and all that emotional investment in the character was for naught. Because I know the end result, I'm not willing to sit through the few hundred pages it takes to get there.

In order to combat this, I would very simply cut the preface. It's really not needed. It would also get us going right into the forward start of the novel, which would help keep the suspense.

Hope this helped. PM me if you have any questions.

This was a good chapter, good plot, good idea.
Alex seems like the good girl, like Rosey Unicorn said, a Mary Sue. Show us some flaws!
Jon is perfect, on the outside, does she have a wittle crush on him? 'Cause it sounds like it, but then they seem like just friends. And what was up with that sudden surge of seriousness? It was strange, and a little scary I have to admit.
Carla is what you would expect, the cliche. She's only worried about her image, tries to take advantage of her foster sister. Is a real bitch, we've got that down.

And also, Alex said how the people in the school weren't used to seeing her messing around, but it seems like her a Jon spend a lot of time together, so wouldn't they be used to it by now? And the relationship between Jon and Alex, you spend too much time between them. You don't know really anything about the school or anyone in it except for Alex, Jon, Carla, and the sub.

Other than that, I thought the prolouge was very interesting, a really good way to start off a story. I can't wait to read that part, to know what it means. Keep writing, I'll be reading.

Thanks, I'm trying in other chapters to sort of direct it away from the two of them, but I might make a little change to their realtionship somewhere ;)

Alright, so...I liked this. It was interesting and the prologue caught me. But there are a lot of grammatical errors. One--you switch between the past and present views. For example, 'I ask her "what's wrong?" as she frowns' as Suzanne Collins does in the Hunger Games. You mainly do past, 'I asked her "what's wrong?" as she frowned." But slipped some present in there.
Another is sometimes I got confused with the names and stuff, like when you slipped Grace in there. We don't know it's her last name and think she has a second name or something besides Alex.
Also I think it's kinda...unrealistic that Jon would get so mad when she said a simple phrase 'you scared me to death.'
You can see that there is a 'more than friends' factor between them, if they were having like a tickle fight with each other, that's kinda what boyfriends/girlfriends do to each other. And they're not an item...yet.

Continue on because this really intrigued me!:)
