Head is in the actual hook part, and I hold the longer end(tail), to support the body. This way, I am in no way in contact with the head of the snake.

Edit, this however is not my own personal hook. I just 'borrowed' a picture from the supplier where I got mine from.

Lol! I feel ya...actually, black is the ONLY color lipstick I can get away with wearing....besides frosty pink and, of course, clear lip gloss. If I try to wear red I look like a clown...
