Is this kid crazy or really a prince? Confused like a confounded crazy cattle
If this kid waas crazy, you did a good job sending out a strong message. What kinda message? I daresay I do not know because I am too dazed and sleepy to think clearer. But I guess it must have to do with our society today or some certain potentials' livinghood
If he was prince, why did her mother do the "work"?
Courage may blossom in quiet hearts,
For who can tell where bravery starts?
For truth is a song, oft lying unsung

Sam,
This is a very enjoyable story, I loved it! You've managed to sketch both the 'real' world of Brooklyn, and to juxtapose a fantasy world on top of that which is very well realised. You've also written a fantasy that is easy for a reader to identify with. It's great!

The Prince as a character is well drawn, emotionally. I feel sorry for him. I want to him to escape the drudgery and awfulness of his 'rea'l life. I totally understand why he invents this other world for himself, I didn't think he was crazy - humans will do many things just to survive! You've done well to make his Prince delusions natural fit into and drive the story - they don't seem forced or silly.

With a few simple phrases you have shown a depressing school life and homelife, without sentimentalising it. I though it was ok that he cried, after all that overload. And the fact that you've only written one day of his life makes me feel as though this is a ritual he goes through everyday.

Apart from the obivous spelling and tense mistakes which are easy to fix with spellcheck and editing, I think you could develop it a little and make it longer if you wanted. You've got a very strong character, and a good basis for a longer story (lots of conflict, a fantasy world, good guys and bad guys, coming of age/initiation). Ofcourse you can keep it this short if that's what you think is best! But if you keep it short (and even if you extend it) it still needs editing to iron out the wrinkles.

Questions it raised for me:
- Did the girl buy into his fantasy too? (the crown/the kiss...were they real?) I have no visual picture of what the girl is like, I wanted to know more.
- Do other kids at school know about his Prince thing? Some dialogue/short scenes with other kids could be useful to sketch the trauma he faces at school, rather than you simply telling us about what they do to him. You do this well when showing us what happens at home with the King. Who is AWFUL (and another very well drawn character, in his physical appearance, his dialogue and point of view. Yuk)
- what with the LV backpack, and the taxi ride to school - was his family rich? or is all that delusion as well? I was confused about this; from his homelife I felt like he was not that rich (another reason to fantasise about being a prince), but...?

THat's all I can think of for now. Good stuff.

Hey, thanks!

Very good ideas...I knew the piece was lacking something but I didn't know what. Now I do! Hehe...I'll have some fun with it and see if it goes anywhere. Thanks again!
