Novels & Novellas (updated)

Stori, if you watch the video, it'll show you how. You really don't have to do anything at all; just begin posting the chapters of your novel on YWS in the appropriate novel subforum, and the rest is taken care of for you. If you have already posted the chapters, then just go to one of them to being working on your project.



Everyone: Whenever I go through the novels & novellas area, I see a lot of empty projects (i.e., no cover, no plot, and no synopsis). Is there a reason for this?

I can't even proceed to step two. *cries* No matter what I do, I just keep clicking the button and nothing happens.

I think there are still problems with putting a plot in then proceeding to step two.

Try it without your plot.

I had no problem with it, guys, and filled it out as directed by the video. So maybe try going over the instructions one more time?

EDIT: One thing I was wondering, is there a quick link somewhere to take you to your finished 'Novel' page? Some way to circumvent the pages of Novels before yours?

Same thing happened to me.

Sooo I just saw the Novel/Novella section today, and asked Rosey about it, at which point she directed me here.

Coolest. Thing. EVER. I'm very excited about the new organizational structure, and it makes me even more excited that I'm working on a new novel and plan on posting it some time soon.

You always do have the best ideas, Nate! It's fun to see them in action.

The bug regarding not being able to go past step 1 has now been fixed. If you want to read more about it, continue onward...


I had set up the 'Edit Novel' section such that it used javascript. But for whatever reason, a large number of people on YWS have java disabled. This is unfortunate because it means I can't do some really cool stuff.

If you have java disabled, please enable it. Two years from now, you won't even be able to surf the web without java.

View Novel on Topic
Added a button for readers to view the novel from any of the chapters.

How to create a novel
Added link on the Novels & Novellas section letting you know how to create novel. If you can, please take the time just to make sure it's comprehensible.

View Your Novels
Added link on the Novels & Novellas section to show your novels only.

View Friends' Novels
Added link on the Novels & Novellas section to show novels by your friends.

Fixed Novel Edit Bug
From now on, no one should have any trouble getting past step one.

Novels with no covers do not show up in the main results
If you have not selected a cover, then your novel will not show up in the main results. It will though show up in the "Your Novels" section (duh), and your friends will be able to find it by clicking "Your Friends' Novels".

Sorting
You can now sort by genre while on the main results.

I was wondering, could we put up our own covers? None of the covers that are up fit with most of my stories, plus it'd be cool to put upour own covers. Just wondering.

I don't have a Read/Write tab, and the page that comes up looks different from what is on the video. Is there another way I can do this?

Everyone: These updates were made back in April/May. xD

megefford: There have been a few changes since April/May, so it makes sense that the page looks slightly different from the video! Instead of a "Read/Write" tab, we have the "Discover Works" tab. Go ahead and click that, and things will start looking like the video.

Sorry, but how do you add chapters?

Post them individually as you would normally post a story. When you are redirected to the new topic, in the upper right corner of the page, there will be a blue box. That blue box will give you the option to add the chapter to an existing novel project. Choose which novel project the chapter belongs to, and that's it.
