Works for me. Maybe a blood vessel in the back of her throat broke, causing the bleeding? It's small enough to keep the airways open, but still, she'd be coughing up the stuff. I suppose it'd go down in a few days, but there'd be some swelling prior to the incident, hence her sudden silence.
