This is something I've been wanting to do ever since I started reading the Wild Cards series. It's a type of writing project where a group of people get together and write stories set within the same world. You can see examples of it in the Star Wars, Forgotten Realms, and Dragonlance series. The point isn't so much to 'roleplay' between ourselves, but to sort of build a mosaic world, with viewpoint characters only interacting when it accomplishes something within the plot.
The easiest way to set this up would be to use blogger.com to set up a master blog account. Then anyone joining the project signs up with their own account, we add them to the contributor list, and they can then post their parts to the master blog. Commitment isn't that big of a deal as stories aren't as reliant on one person posting so the next can continue with the plot, unlike a storybook. You could only ever post one installment, or as many as you want (at a moderate schedule so it doesn't flood the main page). Using a tool like blogger would also allow people to follow the RSS feed so they'll know when new stories are up, and some of the widgets might even be useful.
Right now the only thing happening is finding people interested in the project. Once there are enough, at least five (though there can be more), we'll find out the easiest way to communicate (AIM/YIM/MSN/SKYPE/TWITTER/WHATEVER) and try to decide on what type of world we want to create. It'll have to be something that would provide multiple characters to sort of see the world from: apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic, fantasy, science-fiction, cyberpunk, steampunk, horror, or perhaps a combination of those.
Anyways, if you're interested please say so in a comment. Also, it'd be easier to all talk together if we set up a date/time to discuss things (or multiple dates) and used one of the empty chat rooms to talk, if that's okay with whoever controls that part of the site?
