Any other intelligent life?

So, anyone care to speculate about the possibility of other intelligent life in our galaxy? Personally, I think life is probably pretty abundant. But considering that intelligent life only came about on Earth a few hundred thousand years ago, I bet the likelihood of there being any other intelligent life out there is pretty slim.

It really is impossible to say.

1) We don't know how common it is for life to arise,

2) We don't know how common it is for intelligence to evolve (think: of all the many millions of species that have existed on Earth, only a single branch - apes - has resulted in intelligence).

It's entirely possible, though.

Wait, you mean there's intelligent life on Earth?

I think it's pretty arrogant to suggest that this is the only planet with life on it. There are, after all, millions of worlds out there. There could only be a handful capable of supporting life but even so, that's a handful more than one. Maybe. Or maybe not.

There must be life somewhere. It would be odd if there wasn't.

I actually haven't thought about it too much. Every once in a while a movie or TV show comes along claiming to have actual evidence, but I'm still not entirely sure what to think. Sometimes I think that if there were life on other planets, something would be said in Genesis. And also, following that idea, that they would look pretty much like we do, because they'd be made in God's image.
But yeah, I still don't know what to *think* about it. xD Like, I haven't formed any solid opinions.

There's too many planets out there for there to be only one with intelligent life. Our imagination of the form that might take, however, is ignorant.

'Intelligent' is relative, I think. I agree that there must be some form of life out there, somewhere, and I even think there's probably intelligent life somewhere as well, but they'd be so overwhelmingly different from humans that I'm not sure what either species would be able to do with the discovery.

xD But that wasn't the question, I guess. As an answer, I think it's reasonable to think there's intelligent life out there. And who knows! Maybe they have a Young Writers Society of little aspiring aliens whose administrator has proposed the same question.

Ha ha, no, but I do studies on it, and some pictures have come up from light reflecting towards us from other planets. They haven't figured what it is, but hey, I'd like to think its aliens. There are so many plants we don't even know of. I mean, didn't we just discover planet X or something a few years ago? And its in our own Galexy?! Hey, anything can happen.

I think it would be kind of arrogant for us to assume that humans are the only things in the galaxy that are 'intelligent.' There's got to be something else out there.

Of course there is. What's more, though it will culturally have an anachronistic similarity to either the oriental or aztec civilisations, all of these aliens will speak english to bypass the irritating concept of having to actually have to exchange culture, rather than just lob missiles at each other.

I would personally consider it hilarious if earth were treated by some alien conqueror the same way Australia was by the Brits. For a species that widely considers itself the only intelligent species in the universe, the application of the doctrine of Terra Nullius would be laudabely ironic.

So, for the sake of drama and comedy, yes.

Us Earthlings, here, may never know. It's hard to really decide, because as others have said there are millions, even billions, of planets that we don't even have the technology to reach yet. We may *never* have the technology. I do believe there are other intelligent life-forms, because I doubt that in a universe this large, we're the only intelligent ones here on Earth.

On the other hand, one can easily argue that is arrogant/selfish to believe that the chances of ever finding intelligent life in our galaxy are high. Arrogant because such people assume that just because there is complex life, then that must mean there is intelligent life as well since that's what happened here on Earth. Selfish because it fulfills an innate human desire that we not be alone in our galaxy.

But, I don't believe in calling people arrogant or selfish just because I do not share their views on such a trivial matter

Seriously, though, I think it's very possible, and real. There are countless galaxies, and as Demi said, worlds between worlds. I couldn't honestly say if there is intelligent life out there, but some kind of life nonetheless. And to me, that's exciting. To think that there's something beyond earth, something bigger than us, it just interests me to wonder what it's like. The possibilities are endless.

I believe in life somewhere out there. The universe is a huge place. It is slim to me though, but possible. With all the different areas in space, there has to be another environment that could support life. It doesn't even have to be like earth's own, because evolution could allow them to live on totally different gasses, foods, heat, gravity, etc.

To some degree I think an alien could come to Earth, and capture someone. I mean we catch fish, put them in aquariums, right? We study them for a bit, put a tracker on some, and throw them back in the lake, or even keep them. So why can't aliens fish up some humans? "Hmm, the Asian and Swedish stopped drinking an hour ago, but that Irish keeps going" sorry, had to.

So yeah, we got lucky on Earth, who is to say other planets weren't luckier?

As long as we don't discover other intelligent life...it simply does not exist, because ,till the time it is discovered...it is only pure speculation.
