Symbolic character name help?

So my NaNo this year is borrowing heavily from the Hades/Persephone myth and I am trying to name my characters accordingly.

My stand-in for Pesephone is named Percival (and gets a lot of ribbing for it, believe me), but I can't decide what to call my Hades stand-in.

To help with the character a little: He's a older man, military and possibly a spy. Certainly, he has mystery about him, as he seems to have been around forever and no one seems to know anything about him.

The reference can be in his first or last name. Just something to give a shout out to the big guy down below in classical myth.

Until then, he's being called "Hades" in my NaNo notes. A real name would be nice before November 1. *le wink* Help?

Sounds like you have some great character names so far.

Names that come to mind from your description: Hayden (eh, maybe a little too close?), Haman (you also get the Esther reference to make him resonate), Hessing.

I don't know your character nearly as well as you do, but those are the few names that popped into my head. Also, there are some great name websites out there such as babynames.com and my personal favorite, meaning-of-names.com. Good name hunting!

Well, it doesn't have to be a real name. He's in the military. You could go with a nickname that the troops have given him - develop a background for that? - and introduce a more usual name later, if you want. That's a possible extra character layer, as well, as to why he hides he real name.

As for what you want that nickname to be, the only plausible thing I could come up with (or rather, a generator could come up with) is "Shade", because that's an anagram of Hades. A bit of an obvious one, but still. I think you have some great suggestions in this thread, though. WD's right about the baby name sites, too. If you're struggling, search the meaning "death", "black", or something, and you'll get a few suggestions.
