Sad story... but good book! I can spend hours reading it.

A few people have pointed out that while love is wonderful, it is the relationships, loss, etc that actually hurt.

I'm trying to decide if I agree with that.

No, love hurts. In so many ways. You can even be so happily in love that it hurts. It's that overwhelming. Sometimes that first moment where you realize you are in love hurts physically, like a toothache but in the middle of your chest. And the loss and the relationships wouldn't hurt without love. So whether love itself hurts doesn't matter, because it is what makes you hurt.

Not to say that love is pain. More precisely, love can be terribly painful.

And yes, to be completely devoid of love (charitas, eros, etc...) is to be empty to a degree. But, I can't think of anyone who's managed to go without it.

I guess a new question, then, is "Is love worth it"?

Love is a by-product of externality, temporality, etc. The couple most in love is the revolutionary couple, i.e., the two lovers willing to leave each other if the revolution demands it.

What the hell is Pat Buchanan all about, anyways i think love is eternal.

Love is worth it, however, relationships arent.
Remember love is just to make the humans reproduce.
Relationships are what people make of it.
