Reading Rainbow being cancelled

From NPR: Reading Rainbow will be cancelled after a 26-year run on PBS. The shift in focus from teaching kids HOW to read--rather than WHY to read--is the stated cause for cancelling the show.

This show is basically the reason why I read and why I write. I learned how to read in school: grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc. Reading Rainbow gave me a reason to read. Even today, when I'm skimming through books, I take a peek inside to see what it's about. Reading Rainbow showed me that there was more to books than words and pictures; there was a story that I could become a part of.

I think this decision is a terrible mistake. I mean, Reading Rainbow is the only reason LeVar Burton EXISTS!! Without it, what is he going to do?

Oh no! I looooved that show when I was younger, and still enjoy watching it occasionally, bringing back good memories. I used to always wait for the end, where kids recommend books, and madly scribble down the titles of ones that sounded intriguing, then check them out at the library. I'll miss that show.

Are you freaking serious? I love that show! And that dude! And the theme song...just because it shows how to read whether than why? Geez, some people need to get a grip. And what's going to happen to the guy who did it? I mean is he like angry?

Heh, when I first heard this news, my first reaction was: "It was still on the air?"

The reason for the show disappearing, the shift in focus from why to red to how to red, seems like malarkey to me. That is, it seems like a good cover excuse for why no one wanted to fund it anymore. I'm sure it had more to do with it being aged and low ratings.

Elly ->> LeVar Burton also played Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation (STTNG), and if there's ever another STTNG movie, I'm sure he'll be in it. But in any case, he's done very well with directing and producing as of late. He's extremely talented.

I had the same reaction as Nate. I had no idea the show was still running. But it is sad. I used to watch that show all the time. I remember at the end of one episode they recommended Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (or Philosopher's Stone). It's sad to know that it isn't around for the younger kids of the generation...

Thats horrible! Why? It was such a good show, showing the real meaning of reading. It was one of my favorite shows. I will miss it terribly. I wonder what will happen now...
