Just a little something I typed up when I got bored during class at one point... One shot about the God of Death: Thanatos. R&R.

Thanatos' Lament

I was shrouded with the swirling clouds of haunting white, moans of the dying surrounding me from every angle. A scream pierced the thick fog, but I walked on towards through this graveyard of living dead, a place that I have become to know as home. I hand burst from the aging, moldy ground before me, but the new dead arrival had bad timing because I ended up crushing the monster’s hand.
“Graaaaah!”
I ignored it’s screams and kept walking towards the statue of a fallen angel placed upon a rusting bronze block with the insciption:

“Here are the graves of the damned, the cursed and the unlucky. If only all Life dies, then those with no life shall be haunted for an eternity teased by Death.”

Death. That’s me. I don’t intentionally tease the dead and they know it. They still have their minds from Life, but their current state stops them from doing what they wish.
I look back to the angel above and study it like I always do.

It was like she had fainted, lying on her back with a hand pressed to her forehead. Her wings were spread apart, raised lightly above of her to bend toward the sun like a thirsty flower. A robe warped its way across her body in ragged bits, much of it draped over and dangling, but unmoving like the marble statue she was.

I ran my hand over the plaque and found the opening near the bottom, pulling up on it. Immediately, the statue began to move and stood, stepping down from it’s base allowing a large hole to appear on the top.

I muttered thank you, my dark, smooth voice causing the angel to smile.

“I know you dislike your job, but you are doing a favor to our Lord and Lady—“
“Save it, Mom.”

I felt bad brushing past my mother, Nyx, and ignoring her calls, but one of these days, there will be nothing left to receive as a soul and I’ll be out of my job. Only the Nether worlds of the immortals shall be left and I will be free to roam.
After no vacation (apart from that incident with Sisyphus) for thousands and thousands of years, it would be a good break after the world is gone along with all its destructive humans and pollution.

We immortals are no better with our own arguments and infidelity, cross-breeding with mortals, getting drunk most of the time. But there are some gods, such as my master and myself, who know how to keep things in good health and wish for the better.

Death isn’t so bad, but the lessons it comes with are torturous and understanding. Sigh. If only everyone knew the ways of the balance of Life and Death with Resurrection, but so much knowledge is deadly so I guess it’s for the better.

My twin brother, Hypnos, leaves, signaling the time for night in our area.

Reflecting on it, Death isn’t so bad, just a way of Life, something that everyone needs to keep a balance. There are immortal and mortal; magic and non-magic; dark and light. With every one thing, there is an opposite and that is just another one of the many meanings… with Life… and Death…
By the Gods... Please let inspiration strike me! (Just in a non-violent way O.o)

First off, I see spelling mistakes. You seem to be able to find them yourself, so I won't point them out.

If only all Life dies, then those with no life shall be haunted for an eternity teased by Death.

This confused me. Just what is it supposed to mean?

I muttered thank you, my dark, smooth voice causing the angel to smile.

Why is he thanking her? Also, you need quotation marks around "thank you."

Death isn’t so bad, but the lessons it comes with are torturous and understanding.

This makes no sense either. How can something be both tortuous and understanding?

Why is Hypnos mentioned?

Overall: You know your Greek mythology, and that was a definite plus. I enjoyed how you portrayed Thanatos as well. That he saw the stint with Sisyphus as a vacation amused me in particular.

On the other hand, this felt a bit rambley overall. It also didn't feel very lament-like; it was contemplative rather than mournful. Grammar was also a bit iffy in places. I spotted a couple of missing commas and comma splices. There weren't too many of them, but it was a bit distracting.

The ending I disliked because it sounds like its trying to be profound when it really isn't. The ellipses were a bit much as well; much too melodramatic.

All in all, pretty decent for a boredom scribble.
