Cody
Cody slid over to allow the skater girl in next to him. The back of the police car was cramped. Cody tried to look as inaconspicious as he could but at the same time kept sneaking looks over at the new passenger. She seemed familiar. He couldn't place where he'd seen her. The girl stuck her tongue at him; her piercing twinkling in the sun light. Cody looked away.
It didn't take long to reach the Springton high. The cop car slowed and the girl got out. She didn't say a word as she walked up the school's cement path. Officer Wayet Cody's dad turned back to look at him.
"I want you to stay away from that girl son. She's a bad example."
Cody didn't say anything. He grabbed his bag and stepped out the car. His dad rolled down the car window as Cody started up the path.
"Hey son!" his dad said. "Good luck in tryouts." Cody turned and smiled.
"I will dad." The police car pulled out and Cody started back up the path. He didn't see the skater girl on his way to springton. And he didn't see her during school either. He wasn't surprised though. The school's big and they could have different schedules. He reasoned. Lunch time rolled around and all the students were herded outside in the courtyards. A couple of students tossed the football while a few preppy girls watched. Cody didn't see anybody he knew yet so he found a temporary seat by a girl he didn't know but knew her name to be Jamie. She didn't notice him when he sat down at first. Her attention was engulfed by an etch she was working on. Which was fine with Cody. He didn't want attention at the moment anyway. He instead focused on the guys playing football. He almost convinced himself to try and join in when Jamie looked up.
"Why don't you just join?" she asked.
"I don't feel like it."
"Really? you've been watching them this whole time."
"Do you want me to leave or something?" Cody said. He didn't bother to hide the annoyance in his voice. The two of them sat in silence neither willing to speak to the other at first. Nearby one of the prep girls screamed after almost being hit by the ball. Jamie broke the silence.
"Look, don't get mad at me because you suck."
"What?"
"If you were confident in how you played then you would've gone over there," she said. Cody gabbed his trey.
"Whatever" he said and walked away from the table. He started to dump his trey in a trash can when he noticed a small piece of paper at the bottom of the can. He reached in and dug it out. He read it to himself twice and still didn't understand it. It took him a moment to notice the last part at the bottom of it. "mystery club?" he read out loud.
