Death or rebirth?

So I am toying with the idea of having a story where the MC seems perfect, but in fact she's really messed up because she's trying to do everything. This leads her to become a total rebel, and I have a couple of options for my ending (and it would barely effect the plot line depending on which way I go):

Death of my MC through suicide or murder.
Somebody cares enough about her that she gets out right before it's too late.

I know the second option is a touch cliche, but I'm toying with it.

Really what I'm asking is:

Do you prefer a tragic ending or a bittersweet ending in stories like this?

If she's some wonder girl, I want her to die. If she has flaws, I'd like her to do something for herself before she dies. If she just dies and doesn't really achieve much, then you don't have a lot of a story.

I'd say.

I usually prefer bittersweet endings, but I would go with a tragic ending for her because she is "perfect". Or, if you want it even more tragic, said caring person could find her committing suicide and try to bring her to a hospital/try to save her, but she dies despite these attempts.

I love stories with bittersweet or tragic endings, of course when I say this everyone finds me a very odd person.
I like Lydia's idea, it sounds like a really good ending.

I very much prefer happy endings. However, I always love it when there's a happy ending with lots of suspense before it.

Therefore, I say Lydia's idea, but she survives.

Hurray for joy!

Yeah, I'm one for the bittersweet ending.

And she'd learn her lesson. She wouldn't try to please everybody again.

Tragic endings aren't my favourite, but sometimes they're appropraite for what you're writing. Now, if she deserves to die than...but if she does live like you said, she's learn a lesson. I'd go with the bittersweet ending. Good luck!

Hmmm. This is tough.

Both endings are a bit extreme...

Having everything work out perfectly is unrealistic and makes the reader feel cheated.

Suicide could be good, depending on how the first bit of your novel plays out.
I think suicide as an end would let the reader down a bit as well. Perhaps she could attempt suicide about half way through and the rest of the books could be her rebuilding her life -- she can turn for the good or for the worse, your decision.

I was there. In the end, it got so bad that I asked the Lord to take my life. He didn't; he gave it back to me. So, yeah, I got something to say.

I say bittersweet. I'm the kind of "and they lived happily ever after" kind of person, and hate to see anybody suffer. =(
