The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

I'm starting to get tired with Young Adult fiction, (and believe me, I love Harry Potter and Twilight to DEATH) so if you know of any books that are any good, (regardless of genre) feel free pming me!

I'm rereading 'Saving Agnes' by Rachel Cusk. I LOVE that book. I can understand it perfectly - you know when you feel a book was written especially for you, lol?

Also, 'The Turn of the Screw' by Henry James. My mum's got an old collection for Henry Jameses from the seventies or sometime. Anyway, I loved 'The Wings of the Dove' (even though it was a hard read) so I hope I'll love this too. It also has that gothic appeal!

-The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde. Reading it for school, it's actually not that bad. Highly recommend it for drama folks if you've not already covered it.

-Grendel by John Gardner. Another school book. Nonetheless it's probably one of my favorite books ever and I recommended it to every person. But it's important to read or at least SparkNote Beowulf beforehand.

-Jarhead by Anthony Swofford. Memoir of an unwilling Marine caught up in Desert Storm. Pretty good stuff.

-Tried to read a pirated PDF of The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey, but I laughed too hard.

Gone by Michael Grant. It's some new YA novel. I picked it up because Stephen King said it had a really good villain. I'm about one hundred pages in, and it's pretty interesting so far. The first few pages were really iffy, but it got better. It still suffers from the classic YA novel pitfall of characters not acting or talking like real teenagers, but it's not as bad an offender in that category as some others.

The basic plot so far seems to be that everyone age fifteen and above in a seaside town just vanishes instantly one day, and a supernatural force field springs up around the town and the surrounding areas. In addition, a few of the remaining kids seem to be getting super powers. Right now the town is in the middle of a pubescent anarchy. I'm not too far in so I can't say yet, but I'm really hoping he explores just what kind of crazy, horrible things would happen if a town full of fourteen year olds and younger had to deal with anarchy. And super powers, of course.

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry.
Slowly making my way through Puccini's Ghosts. I feel blasphemous to be not enjoying this, a Morag Joss book.
