Kvatch

The ground gave one final shake before creatures of nightmare began to pour through the demonic gate. Creatures with the body of a woman and legs of a spider, towering golems of frost and ice, impish monsters the size of a twelve-year-old child, even creatures made entirely out of fire.

Amongst all the monsters coming out of the gate, there was one kind that stood most prominent. Demons in the form of men with skin as black as the night and eyes red as blood led the hellish army through the portal. They wore armor of red and black obsidian and brandished weapons that looked to be created from the forges of Hell itself. Their blood curdling cries woke the town as the onslaught of Kvatch began.

Adam

As the man stumbled back, Adam pushed the other two through the passageway and followed them but turned once he was over the threshold. He found the piece of slate that had been lodged into the wall and pulled it free, triggering the spikes.

"What did you do?" Balaes asked as Adam pushed passed him to lead the way. Adam flashed him a slightly sheepish grin.

"When you empty a man's pockets, you shouldn't give him the opportunity of catching you," he explained. "And what did you do?" Now it was the boy's turn to look uncomfortable.

"Just a trick I picked up," he claimed.

"Useful," Adrian commented. "Which way to the Watch headquarters?"

"I'll show you the way but I'm not going up there," Adam said. His fingers were itching for the opportunity to examine the items that he had transferred to his pockets. And afterall, he was a well known thief if a tolerated one.

(In case anyone is confused, I'll tell you what time of the day everyone's characters are in. It's the middle of the night for Ayumi and Boltage's characters, and from what I can gather it's the afternoon for Billy and me. By the time my other character, Edgar, gets back into the city the sun is going to be setting. Ayumi and Boltage are currently ahead of everyone in terms of timeline, but once Edgar gets out of the sewers the rest of us will start to catch back up. You guys don't have to apologize for skipping ahead to that night, I originally wanted the gate to appear at night anyway.)

Edgar

The assassin rushed toward Edgar, dagger in hand. But just before the enemy struck, Edgar grabbed him by the wrist and twisted his hand. The assassin cried out in pain as the dagger fell out of his hand and onto the ground. Edgar reared his other fist back and punched him square in the face. The helmet rattled on impact, and the enemy fell to the ground. Edgar then bent down to take the dagger, went over to the assassin, and stuck the weapon into his chest. The black and red armor disintegrated into a puff of red smoke, just like last time.

Lucas ran back into the room at that moment. His sword was drenched in blood. "What happened? I heard-" He froze when he saw Uriel Septim's body. He bore a look of grief as he fell to his knees beside the king's lifeless body. "We failed...I failed. The Blades were sworn to protect the king and now he and his heirs are dead."

He inched closer to the king's body, possibly to check for a pulse to confirm his failure. That's when he noticed the amulet's absence. "The amulet! What happened to the Amulet of Kings? It's not here on his body!"

Edgar took the amulet out from his pocket. He had put it there just before the assassin charged him so he could fight with both hands. "He gave it to me just before he was killed," he told Lucas.

The general got to his feet and looked at him for a few moments, unsure of what to think of the current situation. "Strange. He saw something in you, trusted you."

"What's so important about this giant rock anyway?" Edgar asked.

"That giant rock is the symbol of our kingdom. The Amulet of Kings has great power, and only those within the royal family can wear it."

"So, what would happen if I tried to put it on?" Edgar asked.

"It would just slip off your neck. Only those with the blood of Uriel's ancestors may wear it and use its power." Lucas rubbed his chin in contemplation. "But why would he give it to you?"

"The king also told me to bring it to some guy named Jauffre."

"Jauffre? He said that? Why?"

"Uriel said he would know where to find his last son," Edgar told him.

"I've never heard anything about the king having another son, but Jauffre would know of such a thing."

"Why is that? Is this Jauffre guy important?"

"Although he may not look it, he is the grand master of The Blades. these days he's living a quiet life as a monk in Weynon Priory near the outskirts of Chorrol, a town north-west from the capitol."

"I thought you would be the grand master, seeing as you were the king's general and all," Edgar said.

"Although I do command the king's army, I am only a captain in the blades. I have only been in their ranks for seventeen years, and Jauffre has been the grand master for over thirty."

"So, how am I supposed to get to Weynon Priory?" Edgar asked.

"First, you need to get out of here." Lucas pointed at the secret door the assassin had used to take them by surprise. "Through that door is a secret passage to the sewers, at least it was supposed to be a secret. That was where we were heading. Once in the sewers, you need to make your way to the surface." He reached into a pouch tied to the side of his armor and took out a key. "Here, take this key. You'll need it to open the door up ahead. You must get the amulet to Jauffre. Take no chances, proceed to Weynon Priory immediately. Got it?"

Edgar took the key from Lucas and stuffed it in his own pocket along with the amulet. "Yeah, I got it."

"Good. I guess the king's trust was well placed."

"What about you?" Edgar asked.

"I'll stay here to guard the king's body, and make sure you are not followed. Now go, time is of the essence." Edgar nodded and began to leave. Just as he was climbing through the secret door, Lucas said, "Wait."

"What is it now?" Edgar asked.

"I know I told you to go to Weynon Priory immediately, but I have a request. My son, Adrian Arakor, lives in the Arcane University with my wife, Raven. I want you to take him with you and bring him to Jauffre as well."

"Why?"

"With the king dead, The Blades will need all the man power we can get to hold the kingdom together. Tell Jauffre I want Adrian to be brought into The Blades as soon as possible. I was going to wait another year and train him myself, but I guess that's out of the question now. Will you do this for me?"

"What am I going to say, no?" Edgar said with a smile.

Lucas smiled back. "Thank you. Adrian will be a great help for reaching Weynon Priory. He is exceptional with a blade and his wits are almost as sharp as mine." Footsteps from back in the sanctum made Lucas ready his sword. "Make haste! I'll keep them from going after you."

Edgar didn't argue. He climbed the rest of the way through the door and made his way to the sewers.

Balaes

It wasn't long before they made it to the local Watch headquarters, apparently Adam's home was only a few streets away. Bal was impressed that he managed to keep himself out of their grasp when he was so close to them. As they neared the outer walls of the compound, Adam melted back into the shadows. Whether or not he was still there, waiting for them, was not something Bal could easily discern.

A watchman stepped forward from the gate, holding a spear in his left hand as he raised his right, "Halt. Stay where you are, strangers, and state your business."

Adrian took another step forward, into the light of the torches attached to the wall. The guard stiffened for a moment, his grip on the spear tightening as if he anticipated a fight. Then he snapped a salute, although he appeared more relaxed now, "Master Arakor! Sorry, sir. I didn't recognise you in the dark." Balaes was surprised to see Adrian appear somewhat embarrassed by the recognition. The watchman, however, didn't notice, "Who's your friend, sir? If I may ask?"

"An informant." Adrian responded. The word made Balaes cringe a little. To him, it carried the same connotations as 'traitor'. "He has information for your captain concerning the local crimelord."

The guard nodded, then smacked a fist twice against the gate, "Two to see the captain! Urgent information!" The gate creaked open, another guard standing beyond, ready to escort them to the captain's quarters.

Adrian

The captain sat at his desk ruffling through some papers. He must have been on his way out for patrol duty because he was wearing his silver armor, standard issue plate mail for those with the rank of captain. He looked up at Adrian with a smile when they came in. "Hello, Adrian. I wasn't expecting to see you today."

"It's good to see you, too, Sir Auroch." Sir Auroch was the captain in charge of the Elven Garden's District. He was also the only captain in the Watch who called Adrian by his first name.

"I'm told you have some urgent information for me?" he asked.

"Before I give it to you, I need to insure that my friend is provided with adequate protection," Adrian said, motioning toward Balaes. "By coming here with me to present this information to you he has jeopardized his own safety."

"I understand. You have my word that he will receive adequate protection. Nothing will happen to him on our watch."

Adrian nodded, he was satisfied with the answer he received. He then turned to Balaes and said, "Tell him everything you know about Flicker."

Edgar

After an hour of wading through all kinds of sewage, Edgar finally made it to the surface. He came out behind the city dungeon. Before him was a worn out dock with a rowboat tied to the end. Across the lake he could see the remnants of some ancient ruin. The sun was beginning to set. He had to hurry if he was going to find Lucas' son before nightfall.

He made his way into the city. After a few minutes of walking he came to the entrance of the Arcane University. The main tower in the center of the school stood taller than any building in the city, except for the king's palace.

He was surprised there were no guards stationed at the front gate. From what Edgar had heard only members of the Arcane University were allowed on the school's grounds. But if there were no guards, that just meant less hassle for him. He went up to the gate and tried to pull it open, but it wouldn't budge. It seemed to be held shut by some magical force.

After a few more tries, he finally gave up. Whatever held the gates shut wouldn't be letting him in any time soon. A mage happened to walk by at that moment. Edgar stopped him and said, "Excuse me, but I'm looking for someone named Adrian Arakor. Can you help me find him?"

"Why do you need to see him?" the mage asked.

"I have an important message from his father."

"Well, I'm afraid he's not in the university right now. Last I heard he went to check something out in the Elven Gardens District a few hours ago."

"Thanks for you help," Edgar said before making his way over to the Elven Gardens District.

Balaes

Bal began to speak, satisfied that he'd be given the required protection from Flicker now that the Watch had agreed. "First and most important thing is that Flicker's den is under the Quiet Lion Inn. The innkeeper knows about it, but he'll deny it. There's about twenty or thirty people in there at any one time, and about two thirds of them are capable of putting up a good fight. The rest you won't be able to get in your bust, they'll disappear or join new gangs when they hear."

He took a few breaths before continuing, "Some of Flicker's best, and his right hand man, will not be there, though. Shmet - his right hand - overheard me telling Adrian what I know. He's against Flicker, and he'll have taken his loyalists and gone to find a new den. I can't help you there."

Sir Auroch shrugged, "This is better than we could've hoped for anyway. We'll flush out the other rats some other time. Anything else?"

"One thing. Flicker had a book stolen from Boss Arri, I think it might be magic. I'm not sure what it'll do, but you'd be better off taking a mage or three from the University." He shook his head, "That's all I know. I can't be any more help than that."

Auroch looked as though he were about to say something when the guard who had let them in at the gate arrived. He looked at Adrian for a moment before muttering something to the captain.

Auroch frowned, "It seems you've an urgent visitor at the gate, Adrian. He doesn't know you're in here, just that you're in the district, and he's come to the Watch for help in finding you. Shall I tell him you're here?"

Adam

If anyone had asked Adam why he was skulking outside the watch headquarters when he'd specifically said he wasn't going up there - and had even travelled a fair distance through his tunnels before coming back - he'd have shrugged. Well, to be more precise he'd have shrugged, made up a reason for being there, stolen their gold, scuttled off into the shadows and then returned on feather-feet.

Something was going on. Adam could feel it and it might just involve his ticket to the easy life. Thieving was getting dangerous and the money was worthless, he couldn't build a life on stolen funds, he couldn't set down roots anywhere while his name was as dark and filthy as the man he took it from.

Now the man who approached the watch house in search of Adrian, he was interesting. He was a scruffy looking guy and walked with haste but an almost absent haste as if he were on some urgent errand but was still considering its proportions. That man was a thinker and that made him someone to be reckoned with. However, what he had in his pockets was even more interesting. Who wouldn't recognise 'The Amulet of Kings'?

Weighing the options wasn't the sort of thing Adam did so he was already holding the amulet before he'd quite decided that he was going to steal it. Did taking something on impulse still count as stealing? He supposed it did and was relieved. He'd have hated to think that he'd have to put it back and start all over again. It was a pretty amulet: gold, red and chunky. A good prize even if one did not know what to do with it. Adam didn't particularly want to be king and was momentarily furious that the scruffy looking man might have killed the amulet's previous owner. Adam had respect for kings.

Not enough respect that he didn't try putting the amulet around his neck. Maybe my mother was... no? Ah well, worth a try. Adam looked amused at the piece of gold and rock that had wriggled away from his neck. Much more likely she was a common prostitute and I suppose that's something I will have to live with. He pulled his coat back and carefully slipped the amulet into one of his belt pouches, close enough to his flesh that he'd feel its removal. But now, to deal with the man. He looked back toward the watch headquarters and saw the scruffy looking fellow come out along with Adrian and Balaes. Well, well, well.

"You sir, are either an intelligent thief or a dead one. Tell me, did you kill the king?" Adam asked in a low, fluid voice. He dropped into a fighting stance. Fist fighting that is. He knew he wasn't very good at it but he was rather hoping that Adrian would help him out if this man was indeed such a traitor. If not, he was prepared to land a blow to the man's jaw, steal Adrian's sword and hopefully work out how to stick it through someone. Adam had respect for kings. You couldn't call yourself an honourable thief if you didn't hate assassins and have respect for kings.

(Perfect)

Five minutes earlier...

Edgar walked around the district for a few minutes looking for Adrian. He asked a few of the guards. The first few said they hadn't seen him today, but the fifth guard he asked had. The guard told him Adrian and three others were making their way toward the Elven Gardens District's Watch tower. The guard was also kind enough to escort him there. On their way a young man bumped into Edgar. At the time, he didn't think much of it.

After a few minutes of waiting, Edgar was let into the tower to speak with Adrian. He was waiting for him in the captain's office. He was accompanied by another boy, but that only made two. What happened to the third one the guard mentioned?

Edgar decided not to worry about it. "Adrian Arakor?" Edgar asked.

"That's me."

"My name is Edgar Whitebane. Your father wanted me to find you."

"Why?" Adrian asked. "If he wanted to talk to me he would've come himself."

Edgar looked at the captain and said, "If it's at all possible, could we have a few moments to speak in private?"

Sir Auroch nodded. "Of course. I'll be just outside if you need me."

Edgar looked at the other boy next and said, "Your friend, too."

"Balaes, can you wait outside with Sir Auroch for a few minutes?" Balaes nodded and followed the captain out of the room. Once the door was shut, Adrian asked, "So, why did my father ask you to find me?"

"He wants me to take you to a man named Jauffre."

Adrian's eyes went wide at the mere mention of that name. "Jauffre? The grand master of the Blades!?"

Edgar nodded. "He wants you to be brought into the Blades as soon as possible."

"It's hard to believe what you're saying, but it has to be true. No one outside of the Blades knows of Jauffre. But my father told me I had to train for one more year first. Why does he want me to become a Blade all of a sudden?"

Edgar began his story from the beginning. He started with his imprisonment for unknown charges, the Lucas and the king coming to his cell, the secret passage, the assassins, and finally the king's death. Adrian listen to his every word intently. When Edgar finished the story, Adrian said, "Uriel Septim is...dead?"

Edgar nodded. "And so are his three sons."

"But if they're dead, then who will take up the throne?" Adrian asked.

"That's why I need to find Jauffre. The king had one more son, and he is the only one who knows of his whereabouts. Just before his death, the king gave me the Amulet of Kings so that I would deliver it to Jauffre."

"The Amulet of Kings!? He gave it to you?"

Edgar nodded and began to reach into his pocket. "Yeah, it's right he-" He froze, the amulet was gone. He tried his other pocket, but nothing was there, either. "It's gone!"

"The amulet? You lost it!?"

"It was in my pocket a minute ago! When did it-" That's when he remembered the guy who bumped into him on the street. He must have been a pickpocket. "That guy! He stole it!" Edgar rushed out of the building. Adrian ran after him, and so did Balaes when they rushed out of the captain's office. He had to find that pickpocket right away and take back the Amulet of Kings. To his surprise, the thief was waiting for him outside.

"You sir, are either an intelligent thief, or a dead one," he told Edgar. "Tell me, did you kill the king?"

Edgar gave the thief a cold stare. "Give back the amulet, thief."

Adrian asked the thief, "Adam, did you steal the Amulet of Kings from Edgar?"

Adam nodded. "And it's a good thing I did, too. Who knows what this guy would have done with it?"

"Adam, you have to give it back! He needs to deliver that amulet to someone."

"Oh, I'm sure he does. So why'd you do it? Money? Power? Fun?" Adam asked Edgar.

"I did not kill the king," Edgar said in a low, steady voice.

"Why else would you have the amulet?" Adam asked.

"I don't have to answer that," Edgar told him. "If you won't listen to reason, then I'll just have to take it back from you by force."

Adam pulled out a knife. "I'd like to see you try, murderer."

Edgar took off his shirt, he didn't want it to get ruined during the transformation. White fur began to grow out of all parts of his body. His arms and legs began to change shape, his hands and feet growing sharp claws. His face shifted to that of a wolf, his teeth growing and sharpening in the process. Lastly, a tail grew out of his backside. He let out a howl when the transformation when he had changed into his werewolf form.

Ivellios ran panting and holding his bloody shoulder. Leaning up against a tree he rested a moment to recap what had just happened. A huge gate had opened up in the middle of town and demon started pouring out. He was so scarred he couldn't move. Then he remember what the old warrior who saved him said, Find my children and get them out! Shaking his head he wanted to go back and fight, but knew he would be useless against so many beasts.

At that moment Ivellios heard yelling not too far away. Cursing under his breath he rushed towards the sound. When he reached his destination he saw a demon hovering over three other people. Leaping out of the brush he stabbed the creature in the back. It gave a wail before disappearing into smoke. "You guys alright?" He say two boys and a girl. They all seemed younger that him, thought the boy holding the girl seemed the oldest. "Are you the kids of a warrior named Ilum?"

The girl seemed worried and replied, "Yes, what's happened to my father?"

"He told me to get you out!" Ivellios replied as she started to run towards town.

"Are you insane, our father's fighting and you want us to run?" asked the eldest boy.

Ivellios took a moment to respond, "Right now the town's being over run. Your father was winning when I left, but the town is lost. He told me to find you two and take you to Skingrad. It's the closest town, I'm sure he'll meet us there no we have to go!" Panting he looked into the boy eyes and he nodded. He fetched his sister while the other boy walked up to him.

"I have a potion that may help that wound." The third boy said.

Ivellios put his hand on his shoulder, "Make it quick we have to move." When the young mage was done they set out as fast as they could hoping they didn't see any more demons.

Adam

The merest flicker of a glance told Adam he was alone against this beast. Balaes couldn't be blamed, helping wasn't his nature. And Adrian... That was honourable men for you. They didn't care, not about the likes of him. Not about the boys and girls who had fought every day to survive, the people who still fought on and on in a brutal circle until they made one false move and then that was it. And here was Adam's false move but he wouldn't run. No. Not from this fiend.

"And now you show your true colours," Adam snarled. He faced the wolf, trembling just a little and realised that Adrian's sword was out of the question. That kid was a warrior: he knew how to protect his weapon. So... this was it. A dagger against a wolf, what a way to go.

"Last chance," the wolf growled. Adam laughed, a thick and bitter gurgle.

"I will kill you traitor." The wolf lunged. Adam side stepped quickly and brought the dagger up but the wolf pulled out of the way, his teeth snapping forward, scraping against the arm that had been wrenched back just in time. Adam slipped around behind the wolf, staying back, keeping low.

The wolf was quick. Adam's stealth and speed could barely keep him ahead and not far enough to retaliate with attacks of his own. Sweat beaded on his brow and he was tiring. But he couldn't let the slayer of his king go free without punishment. What he felt strongest, even as the claws raked lines down his chest was his disappointment in Adrian. He had thought better from a boy with such a bold heritage. He did not expect the boy to help a thief but to avenge the king's death? What the hell was he thinking?

"I'll take you down," Adam swore as he caught the wolf's shoulder with his blade. They were close, the rancid breath of the wolf hot against his chest and the saliva like acid as its teeth rushed toward him. Adam clutched his side, he dropped and he rolled, thrusting his dagger across the wolf's leg but it left only a shallow cut.

"The amulet will be delivered to the king's sons!" Adam insisted. The thought of saving his breath never crossed his mind. Adam had been taught to use words as a weapon, to distract, to maim, to render another incapable of harming him. It wasn't working so well at the moment but it helped him fuel his anger, thinking of the three princes.
