I adore the LoTR movies; they are absolutely amazing and no sooner have I seen the last film that I want to watch the first one again. XD And the soundtrack is so calming, urrr. The Harry Potter movies were plain awful, though, imo. The first two weren't that bad, because Richard Harris was a great Dumbledore. :c I disliked the rest of them greatly.
And when it comes to books, I'm torn. It depends on my mood, I guess, but Harry Potter makes for an easier read, after a long day.
Well, I am (and will always be) a Lord of the Rings fanatic (please don't ask me to explain why...), thus I shall have to say all of Tolkien's works (including the Hobbit, Silmarillion, Children of Hurin and his Unfinished Tales)
However, Harry Potter is also extremely nice, even if I only started reading it to satisfy my English teacher, my best friend (@AstralHunter) and my own curiosity.
Thus, I am once again indecisive...

More than 400 million copies have been sold worldwide, and as if that wasn't enough, Joanne Rowling (J.K. Rowling is only a pen name) is also the only billionaire author, earning her the record of highest annual earnings for a children's author.
AND she also holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest selling book in history. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ... sold 8.3 million copies in the first 24 hours (or 345,833 books per hour), following its release in the USA at 00.01 on 21 July 2007."
Therefore, while debate between Harry Potter fans and Lord of the Ring fans is welcome and entertaining, it is ultimately futile.

Well, I really don't think we can compare the two series. One, they were written in two completely different time periods with different morals and standards; Two, two unique storylines and lores; Three, two different authors with completely different life stories which in turn influenced their books.
Also, both series are excellent, and nobody can deny that...

Harry Potter is amazing- and just in case for anyone who does/did this, DO NOT RELY ON THE MOVIES! I think that you are really not a true fan if you only watch the movies- the books have the complete story and details, and the movies leave out and change most things!
The Hobbit is ok, but HP wins by far

I say that they're equally awesome. They're both fantastic book series. I don't really see how you can compare them, actually. They have a lot of really similar points. You know; wizards, mythical creatures, the use of magic, cursed objects, etc., etc. On the whole, people who like one tend to like the other. (This could, of course, just be me. In which case, feel free to beat me over the head with insults. ^.^)
(In all fairness, I've admittedly not read the Lord of the Rings books, but I know the basic plot and I have read the Hobbit, which is fantastic. <3)
