The Devil and Harry Potter?

Yeah. How do you know Lord of the Rings isn't true? Whenever I read it, I find myself wondering where Hobbits live these days. Besides, like Neil Gaiman said, it's called "Let's pretend." Then there's also (and this goes for many genres) "The willful suspension of disbelief."

As soon as I saw how long that article was I wasn't even going to try reading it. This kind of stuff is pointless and it's been going on since the first Harry Potter book was purchased. I don't exactly think J.K. Rowling possesses any extraordinary gifts. She possesses originality which I'm guessing is the reason for the craze of Harry Potter and also most likely the reason for that article. Some groups just don't support originality or difference and need to cover it up some how.

Surreal, my friends have told me alot about Harry Potter, and i've also seen bits of the movie.

I honestly think books like Silverfin (The young James Bond) books and Alex Rider series are better.

No, there are tons of books for younger readers that are just as good.
The Series of Unfortunate Events books, and Artemis Fowl ,to name a couple.

I agree with beautiful disaster. Its pretty much a moot topic. Im not seeing too many people debating for the opposing side.

I am a firm believer though, that Harry Potter books, are darn swell, and in a sense "classic". They are also getting kids reading, and keeping them reading as the grow up. Which is an ingenious idea. Christians are scared becuse they see that more kids are reading harry potter and not the bible. And going to see the movies, not going to church.

I've read the first Alex Rider book (my brother has a couple). I hated it.

But if they didn't feel threatened by them, why are they banning them? To do that completely undermines the authority of books like the bible because it shows that they believe it have a more significant effect on their children than the bible.

I myself am a christian and I completely go against the article. In the christian religion it dosen't matter what you read as long as you stay faith full to gods wishes. You can watch the ring or the devils rejects and god dosen't care as long as you use them only for entertainment. If you let these films or books take such an impact in your life to where you start doing what ever the characters in the stories do then you are already weak and werent a true christian in the first place. I watched all of the harry potter movies and i loved them but did i go around telling lies or blackmailing people because harry potter did it? No! I did not because i'm not stupid. Besides harry potter's aunt and uncle abused him that's the only way he can get away from them. If i lived with those people i would do the same and not because harry potter did it because it's the only way to get away. So if people agree with this article then fine but if you let these so called bad influences poision your mind then you are too easy to manipulate and are not a ture faithfull christian. Harry potter is entertainment for me and nothing else.

*shifts feet* *eyes twitch* Oh that DOES it! A little boy can just skip over Niagara Falls on a tightrope, without falling? I WANT OT DO THAT TOO!!! If he can, I can. If someone even pretends it's possible, THAT'S A CHALLENGE!!! Impossible is not a word I like to hear!!!
It sounds fun. Too bad Niagara falls is too expensive to reach.

Anyway, as for the rest of the argument, I'm afraid I'll have to reply in the noble art of sarcasm.

Oh dearie me! A main character in a fiction book sometimes breaks the school rules to stop the whole of human kind being destroyed! What ever shall we do? Gasp! Is this teaching children to break school rules in order to save the world? THE HORROR!!! WHAT WILL THE WORLD COME TO?
What's this, the book, which is openly acknowledged as fantasy, uses magic too? That's IT. GRAB YOUR TORCHES AND PITCH FORKS EVERYONE!!! IT'S TIME TO HUNT SOME PAGANS!!!

The harry potter series is simply imagination and just a story. It's like playing cops and robbers when your a kid. It's just a fun story that gets kids into reading and lets them have a fun time doing that. If you shelter your kid from some small book about fantasy...you have alot to shelter your kid from the real world that is actually happening in the present.

It also completely diminishes the authorety of the bible if people say that kids shouldn't read it because it could have that effect on them. It's basically showing their weakness because if they were confident in the influence of the bible, thne they would have no reason to worry about that.

I'd like to read the article again. Much as I'd like to agree with you all, I feel that the writer was trying to illustrate a different point than most of us are seeing at a side glance. It's not the same argument against Harry Potter as I'm used to seeing. But I don't think I agree with him. I'll have to think. I'm posting so I can find this again, by the way.

Imagination is a very human, raw gift that some have in larger doses in others, and I'm not surprised that anyone was idiotic enough to question something so essential to human development. Imagination, is what, I feel, drives the human race further in to accomplishment, as well as destruction. It's all a part of the ultimate and universal balance.

Also, Harry Potter isn't bad. He's human. He is extremely, essentially human, more so then the majority of the characters you encounter in books. I suppose that this is a part of his charm and what attracts million, maybe billions of people all round the world to him.

If you read the books, then you know they aren't anti-christ. Sure, they don't show anything Christian (such as praying and grace and so on), but yet they aren't doing anything Satanist (chanting to the devil, yelling at God in a bad way)! Who says that the characters are even Christian? If a book were written about a school of Muslims, would that make it evil? Even though I'm not really a Christian (My Mom won't let me convert out of it) I still know the beliefs, and there is nothing wrong with JK Rowlings novels!

You don't see them accusing the others (such as CS Lewis or JRR Tolkien) of such ludicris accusations! Why JKR?
In those books, there is an evil person who uses magic (EX the White Witch, Voldemort, or Sauron), a wise one (Aslan, Dumbledore, Gandalf [I think]), and a purpose (To destroy Evil!) If destroying the Evil is the cause for the Characters, how is that Anti-Christ?

Though a few bad seeds leak through to society in JKR's novels *coughcoughMundunguscough* who seem to be immoral, that doesn't make the WHOLE series Satanist! If those people who wrote this article each wrote a novel, would the novel work if all the characters were good? If they made an evil person, would that make the whole thing evil? Probably not. But yet they continue to do this!

I think these people should just stop, for we are children and teens, and we'll overpower 'em all in the end These few people won't be able to get Harry Potter from being removed from the whole Christian religion! So they should just STOP! It won't work! We won't let 'em take away one of the greatest series of novels ever written! NEVER!
