I'm entering for a poetry competition next year and the theme is 'Doubt.' It's quite a complex but interesting topic; how would you tackle it, or difficult themes in general?

Brainstorm first! What are some things that you've doubted? Maybe you had to question your faith on spiritual matters? Whatever, just write down whatever doubt reminds you of. Then, after you come with these words or images, take the strongest one and see what you can do with it. What does it remind you of? What have other people said about that particular doubt? Poets? Expand!
So basically, take it out of your soul and bring it out.

Yeah, Snoink pretty much just hit it on the nail. You've got to find a way to identify with that theme. If you can do that, you will find that everything else will just flow right out and you'll wonder why you stressed over it so much. And, what's more, if you relate it to yourself, you have a much better chance of winning that competition, because those judges will know you've experienced that feeling before.
