It takes a talented writer to control more than 4 characters. Each one has a different personality and different way of doing things.
Just be able to understand all of your characters personalities, never get them confused, and be able to use them all in one dialog piece.
I myself suggest never going over 2 characters. It becomes crowded, and even the best of writers can't control that many well. But that's just my opinion.
