This is a weird research question for something I'm writing. Some of my characters decided to start a fight club, sort of like the movie only minus all the terrorist activity and other weird stuff. Anyway I was wondering how many girls would be wanting to join as compared to guys. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, basically it's just a club of people that gets together every once in a while and fights. The rules are just basically that if someone says "stop" you stop, and there's a time limit.
I don't really think that many people on this site would consider joining. Most of us come from fairly nice homes, right? But then again, that might not influence someone wanting to join a fight club. I wouldn't mind beating someone's ass every once in a while, ya know?

Well, I know a lot of people consider me as a violent person. I don't know why, I don't start fights or anything. But I think maybe it's because I project hostility, eg, when I say "Back off, or I'll break your fingers" I mean every word of it, and it comes out in my voice, and generally people back off ... or become cautious. I don't care about being hurt as much as some people do, I mean I'll care afterwards, but not while I'm being hurt and that scares people. In reality, if someone hit me, I'd fight back and wouldn't give a damn how much I hurt them, or how much I get hurt. I'd defend myself, and my friends.
But I wouldn't join a fight "club" because ... it's not the same. I fight in defence, not for fun.

Violence of any means is inexcusable, but it happens, and there it is. You cannot imagine the situation until you are in it. I'm not saying I live in a violent community and am subjected to physical violence on a regular basis, because it's not true, but you know, you don't have to be. However, there is a level of truth about the film, the emotion of the fight, how it makes you feel. Apart from roughhousing, I've never really fought (at least to the extent of making someone bleed) for the hell of it. Not strangers.
I guess it's something like how Hemingway describes the killing in war (not in the same way (as killing is something apart), but that it becomes almost the coldness in you).
I wouldn't join, a club of such a sort is degrading, never mind how Hollywood can colour it. What you do in your own home and in your own neighborhood is very different from establishing a 'club' whose purpose is to allow young men to inflict violence upon each other for purposes of pleasure simply because they cannot do it by themselves.

I don't think the kind of home you come from is really relavent. But I wouldn't join, either way. I'm a pacifist, and prefer to avoid violence except as a last resport. And I'm also puny.
Please, sit down before you fall down.

*grins* it's the small people who are the most dangerous, people underestimate them and they have more to prove.
I'm a shorty.
But yeah, violence is a last-resort, defensive measure.

i would only fight if it was like in my karate club (semi contact sparring) and it wasnt
fighting where you try to break your friends legs or something... its fun if its controlled
but i dont like to hurt people etc. plus im very shy. i also happen to be a pacifist. umm
most of the time anyway lol
I spar all the time, I generally like to do so without the gear on. Its constricting, and it involves less risk, making the fighting less of a learning experience. which is what sparing is for.

I'd love to learn how to fight for self defence. I know one technique that can make a guy let go off me if he grabs me, but if he does it from behind it's not as affective. I don't believe in fighting with weapons though, fists and feet etc are dangerous enough.
Here is some more background on the club. The two guys who start it, Jake and Todd, are high school seniors. Towards the end of the schoolyear, they're sitting at the bus stop and Todd suggests they start a fight club, and Jake, the protagonist, agrees to because he's drunk. Jake is thought of as the unofficial leader (everybody thinks he's been in a fight club before, and that he's now in more than one, and he's the best fighter in the club and he came up with the rules). The rules aren't the same as the ones in the movie; it's okay to talk about the club. The rules are basically:
1. When somebody says "stop," stop.
2. Don't punch Jake in the nose. (This is because he's protective of his appearance.)
3. No wearing shoes. (This is in case someone gets kicked, so it doesn't hurt as much.)
4. Like in the movie, if it's your first time at fight club you have to fight.
There's no official rule against kicking, but Jake tells everybody, "Kicking is for cowards," so there's not a lot of kicking going on. A fight ends when the time limit's up (a time limit is agreed upon at the beginning of the fight) or when somebody says to stop (which is usually when somebody got hurt enough that they don't want to fight anymore). People do get hurt (obviously), but not totally badly. The goal isn't really to hurt each other, just to have fun. So people get black eyes, bruises, bloody noses, etc., but it's unlikely that anyone ends up losing teeth, breaking limbs, coughing up blood, or going to the hospital.
When the club starts out, it's one-on-one fights, but as it goes on there are some group fights as well. Shortly after graduation there's one huge fight that everyone participates in.
Like QiGuaiGongFu, I prefer to spar without the gear because it's too constricting. Jake feels the same way, and the people in the club don't wear gear, or even boxing gloves. When he's talking to his girlfriend, who hates the idea of the club, he tries to explain that it's not about hurting people and he'd prefer it if people don't get hurt, so she asks why they don't wear gear. He says that he doesn't wear it because he doesn't like it, but it's not outlawed in the club and he'd be perfectly okay with it if someone else wants to wear it. But I doubt anyone would, because other people might make fun of them or think they're a coward or something. What do you guys think?
Also, for those of you who definitely wouldn't join: What would you tell a friend who was considering joining? How would you react if one of your friends joined?
"The mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragedy. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls the butterfly." ~ Richard Bach
Yeah, I'd tell my friend they're complete morons, and if they get brain damage or die it's all their fault.
And boo hoo. It looks like I'm a coward. I kick, perferrably in the shins or knee cap. Handy tip for people who want a self defence move: kick the knee cap, it will probably pop it out, or shatter it. Mum's advice to me although I haven't had to test it yet. *grins*

And now questions for those of you who would join:
Guys: Would you fight a girl? Probably not, but what if you were being pressured to fight a girl? Would you fight if they were given an advantage, say for example if it was two girls against just you? What if it was a huge group fight, with guys and girls? Would you attack the guys more? If a girl punched you, would you punch her back? If you wouldn't fight in any of these situations, what are your reasons why? Do you think it's because of society, or do you think it really is wrong to hit a girl? Or, if the girl was a really good fighter, would you secretly deep down be afraid you'd lose?
Girls: Would you fight a guy? If not, why? Would you be intimidated? Would you be insulted if a guy wouldn't fight you because he thought you were to weak, or was afraid he'd hurt you? In a fight, would you feel like you had to do well because you were representing all girls?
