Polygamy in Texas

This is just...insane.

Polygamy sounds somewhat reasonable to me. It is, after all, a religion of sorts. But this is way too far. No one should be forced into something like this in such a brutal and brainwashing way. I mean, out of all the girls they have saved, most of them are 14 or 15 and have the mentality that this is how the world actually works. Even worse, they're pregnant! And not by choice. And not by accident. *shakes head* sad.

That's not all that's wrong with this sect. Many of the teenage boys are run out of the compounds so as to keep the competition for the young girls thin. These boys are left to fend for themselves in a world they don't know and are shunned by their families. While they aren't forced to marry at a young age to old men and raped, it's still pretty bad.

Personally, Polygamy is not my cup of tea. But, if other people like it then fine.

As long as nothing illegal, unwilled, or harmful is going on. This was clearly not the case here. Soo wrong.

(Heads up: I looked up what I'm talking about below, but I may still be wrong. Please don't throw rocks at me if I am!)

In the United States (where Texas is,) polygamy is ILLEGAL. (Well, you can get around it, but technically it's illegal.) In Texas, you may not marry before you are 16, even if your parents agree to it. Top it off with the awful things taking place there, and they're pretty bad.

I just feel bad for those who have to leave. I mean, sure, they're not going to be beat or raped anymore. But they DO have to start a whole new life. My English teacher was talking to us about it today. Apparently the people interviewing them all gave the kids crayons to keep them busy, and the kids didn't know what to do with them. They've never had iPods, computers, or televisions. They don't know our slang. Yet they're about to be thrust into our world.

It's a lose/lose situation, but hopefully they'll be all right. If they're still alive today, they must be pretty strong (in mind and body.)

Oh, and another thing my English teacher told us: the kids there are apparently healthier than the rest of the kids in the US. (Probably because they can't rot away in front of YWS. )
