Awww..c'mon..don't you think you guys are being a little hard on Paolini?

Everyone KNOWS he's not even near being as awesome a writer as Tolkien, or CS Lewis.
But cut him a little slack, it's near impossible to write an original fantasy book nowadays.
I know I'm way younger and way less experienced than all you guys, but I like Paolini's books, and this kinda upset me:

People like Paolini because he functions at their mental level (i.e., zero).
Be yourself; everybody else is already taken.

I came, I saw, I conquered.

When you're being nice to your character, you're being bad to your book.

Thing is he said he's better than Toilken, which is a gross error. If he maybe admitted it wasn't original and plagerized from other story we'd maybe not be so tough on him but he hasn't so we've right to be annoyed. Plus he's making money off others ideas. While people here try and come up with an orginal idea. Furthermore he's got everyone believing he's some child prodigy which is no way true.

So yeh...

It's apparent that he actually cares very little for his fans, as well. He releases these less-than-a-minute-long videos to give "spoilers" (a "new villain" - wow, we didn't see that coming - who's guessing it's a bounty hunter called Foba Bett?), and doesn't talk about anything else, ie. how happy he is people are enjoying his books, hoping they'll enjoy the next one, all that shizzle. He's trying to be all Harry Potter on us, and it's really not working, partly because so many less people care, and partly because he's going about it all the wrong way.
There's always been a lot of tension between Lois and me, and it's not so much that I want to kill her, it's just, I want her to not be alive anymore.

"He likes to laugh, and not in a good way."

Oooh, ooh! It's the Joker!

I can list you five original fantasies off the top of my head. They are... hang on... give me a minute... Anyway, it's not just that hes cliched, it's that he tries to make out that he isn't. Cliched, that is.

Can any of his fans see the resemblance between Paolini, Tolkien and Lucas?

I made a list the other day, but really can't be bothered to go through them again.

Lol, he should have come to the YWS, but even then, I wonder if even we could have saved him :-)

MY WORDS STILL STAND! And it's NOT hard to come up with an original idea, I've managed to come up with *mutters under breath, counting fingers* EIGHT intriguing and original books! So there!

Anyway, watched the spoiler video. The problem with Paolini is that he looked like a nerd when he published, and still looks and sounds like a nerd now. I look like a nerd, but I don't SOUND like a nerd, which is why people can STAND me.

I don't see how looking like a nerd is a problem... :?

Are you guys referring to this? :
"In my writing, I strive for a lyrical beauty somewhere between Tolkien at his best and Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf"

I think he was just setting his goals too high...

"Villain who likes to laugh..."

Judging by Paolini's plagiaristic track record, this is the new villain:

The Joker. Wait--no, the Jokar. There. Now it's original. The Jokar is a laughing madman whose real name is...Keith Hedger.

Nah, see that's too original. More like... Sauron, no wait, Nauros, or maybe over Varth Dader, who is actually Eragon's Dad!

Nah I think I'll stand by on flytodreams on this one. As much as you're going to insult a writer, lay off his fans. I won't be the only one to admit that I enjoyed elements of them before I realised a...fuller picture of his piece.

And I think he's come as far as admitting he's plagiarized as he can and not get a law suit...I mean "all fantasy is derivative"....come one!

But you guys are right about the spoilers. I loved the one for eldest, it turned into a prophecy half way through, and one which was clearly intended to get a "wow that sounds impossible, I bet chris is *such* a genius."

He copped out "easier to fit a camel through the eye of a needle" with "hammer passes through the eye of the boar" except he loses the awesomeness of the biblical reference because I'm sure many a boar has been killed with a hammer through the eye (or somesuch).

And without defending Paolini; bashing on him is becoming as hackneyed as bashing on emos, and at least they gain some sense of justification for "my life is so hard" when we do that. Paolinini doesn't need us to inflate his ego with "I'm so ahead of my time, no-one understands me" syndrome.

Ye, I understand where you are coming from. I would never insult his fans, I mean, they can enjoy what they want.

It's the writer that ticks me off

I enjoy insulting fans if they're overzealous in their fan-dom. (Or should I say fan-dumb, bad pun).

It sounds like now Paolini is going to be ripping off Greek mythology as well as Starwars/Lotr now...

I've just read that Saphira is going to find a mate in Brisingr. That's going to be awkward...

He had better not. Greek mythology is far too cool and complex for Eragon's universe.

Periwinkle: XD The conflict created by such an event will (hopefully) be interesting. Maybe Paolini could bear to put Eragon and his [s]winged horsie[/s] "best friend" through the wringer again. Maybe Eragon will turn to yaoi, which, should it happen, would amp up the fangirl ratings about 99900%.

Kang: Lol. Fandoms are hard to ignore, but they're the things that most often ruin your impressions of things. XD Just tell the rabid fangirls to go away.
