First, a quick note. I don't know what happened in March. I have absolutely no idea. Even all of my theories (Spring Break for one) fail to account for what happened in March 2008. In fact, the only satisfactory explanation I have been able to conjure up is that y'all had way too much caffeine... or have some other, more nefarious addiction.

In any case, I'm not even going to patronize March 2008 by saying it was huge. That's an understatement (at least for the time being...). The amount of increase in posting is unprecedented in YWS history. So let the facts speak for themselves (along with some other new stats):

Note: The %'s are the increase from March 2007

20,937 posts 118%
2nd place is January 2008 with 14,659 posts

1,440 new topics 67%
2nd place: Jan. 2008 with 1,327 topics

Topic to post ratio = 1 to 14.5 (very good!)

250 New Members 15%
Lowest Since November '08 and far below the three month average

607,640 Pageviews 88.53%
2nd Place: Jan. 2008 with 470,346 pageviews

39,264 Visits 101.28%
Just slightly below January '08

So what the above data shows is that YWS hardly grew. On many measures, it was at or below the three month average (Dec. '07 thru Feb. '08 ), especially with regards to new member registrations. But, posting exploded.

What this tells me is that YWS did really well in March '08 with retaining old members. Plus, people stayed around the site a lot longer. The average time spent was 20 minutes, which is far above the average of 15 minutes.

By the way, this is great because it shows that YWS is not dependent on new members for growth. Most of the growth in March came from old members.

And now for some other random statistics:

Internet Explorer is used by 56.8% of all YWSers. This is down 9% from a year ago when it was 66%.

Firefox is used by 34%. This is up 4.5% from a year ago when it was 29.5%.

Safari is used by 6.85%. This is up 3.4% (that is, in March 2007 it was 3.45%).

The funny thing is that at the time I was posting this, technically April 1 (which still has 4 hours to go by the server time) is #4 on the list of top 10 posting days.

April could be another big month... although it's usually a little slower than March.

I think this means we need more persuasion for people to use Firefox.

We're such a booming community. Although I feel incredebly weird because of the three things on that list that are mine... Silly weird poetry!

I love when you give us stats, Nate. These make the end of the months exciting. Any other stats? :D

Firefox rocks!!!

Aaaaaaaand... I can't believe that I live in one of the top ten cities. Who else is on YWS from there?? (I only know one person from there...)

Those are the most visited from cities, right? Who all is from #3?? (W00T, lucky number!!!)

Tell me about it--to have two of mine on stories was just...

I was more active during March than I had been the previous few months. This explains the spike in activity.

I wins at YWS!

Aw, I'm not on there at all. :( Oh, well, all in good time. ;P

I actually have had an account here for a while, but have only recently become active, being on this site nearly every second I get. Maybe others are doing this, explaining the boost but lack of new members?

I love stats!

Wow! I love these stats! Woot! Go London!
What I can't understand is why we have had less members but....
Wait a minute!

Lowest Since November '08 and far below the three month average

But there hasn't been a November '08! I see you have learnt to tell the future then

I think the reason is obvious. I came back! And my return inspired others to be fruitful and multiply in post counts! Yay me! :P

In all serious, I do think it has more to do with people like JF who weren't really active before and are really just checking out the site for the first time. I saw several welcome topics along those lines.

Or maybe whatever changes you made in March caused the site to eek out a bizarre slightly toxic gas that keeps people addicted to the site and makes it difficult to leave.
