I sighed and rubbed her cheek. "Probably not for a very, very long time."
Her face dropped.
"Why?" I asked. "You know it isn't usual."
"I know," she said quietly. "But-"
"We're not made like humans, we don't mate for life Aurora," I said to her, as if explaining to a yound child. "Any faeries that marry are centuries older than I am."
"Are you just saying that, or do you just like flirting too much?"
"I like flirting because it's in my nature," I said. I frowned. "You think ahead so much. I always think you're part human." I grinned. "Are you?"
"No!" she said fervently. "I don't even like them!"
"You're so different, do you know that?" I said, kssing her forehead.

I held back tears. "Yes I do. Now...If you'll excuse me, I think the Queen is getting lonely." I fled. I ran up to the library and hid myself in a part where no one else was. I started crying. It was rediculous. But if he was going to flirt with every girl, then I didn't want him! Let the stupid blond handmaiden have him. I would no longer consider him. Even if I had to hid myself from him forever.
I smiled. "Oh yes. I like them very much." I paused. "Do you ever feel like a human?"
She shrugged. "Sometimes."
I thought about this. We returned most changelings once they reached puberty, or a little later, taking back the one of our own we had left there, unless it was a special case of getting rid of a faerie. After a while though, most human children began to lose their innocence. Having grown up amongst us they would be resistant to our charms, becoming rude and longing for "freedom".
Sometimes I wondered if Kitty already knew about her past.
Just then, I saw Aurora running from the ballroom.
Owen-
I stared as she left. I shot the blonde handmaiden one more glance, then sped after her.
"Aurora!" I called. "Wait!"
She didn't reply, but carried on to the library. I followed her in.
"Aurora," I said quietly, searching for her. "I'm sorry, but it's my nature. Would you be happier if I lied?" I asked the darkness.

I stopped crying. I didn't make a sound. I didn't move, I didn't breath.
Maybe he'll leave. I thought.
I knew it was his nature...and I didn't want him to lie. But...I just wished that...he would want me, and only me. I cursed in my head my head my beauty. I wished I hadn't been so beautiful. Maybe being human would be better. settling down with one person who you loved for the rest of your life sounded like a dream to me.
He smiled and pulled her closer, kissing her again. he loved the feel of her against him. Her soft lips conforming to his. He grinned. Maybe this place wasn't so bad afterall.
I frowned. "Kitty, your human friends are getting very close."
"So?" Kitty shrugged. "I'm not playing with them right now."
"But he's going to spend all his energy with her," I said a little bitterly. I had been quite happy to relinquish my hold on the human boy to Kitty, but to a human girl? No!
She shrugged again. "I'm tired."
"But don't you think it would be better, and far kinder, to give one of them up?"
She chewed the question. "To who?"
"Well, you could give him to me. Or," I leant down to her. "We could have a hunt with the girl. That would be fun wouldn't it? You like hunting don't you?"

I found her, head bent over a table. I went over and gently laid a hand on her back.

I tried not to cry. "Look, I get it. I understand. I don't care, okay. just...don't flirt with me anymore. Please. go back to the blond, please. Just...leave me alone." I refused to look up. it hurt. It hurt a lot.
Why should Caesar just get to stomp around like a giant while the rest of us try not to get smushed under his big feet? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar, right? Brutus is just as smart as Caesar, people totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar, and when did it become okay for one person to be the boss of everybody because that's not what Rome is about!
