Siren was surprised, Ben had never run from anything, she was glad they weren't gettin mad at her. She had wanted to slap Ben but she still had to live in the same house as he did.

"I'm sorry, Riley, I should've warned you." She muttered.

"Its not your fault you have a perv for a brother." Riley hissed in the direction Ben had gone.

"Thanks," Siren smiled, she popped a grape in her mouth and yawned.

Hmmm. How to incorporate a friendless, unsociable character? You do like to challenge us Alice...

Kevin

My eyes followed Ben right to the door and only then was I satisfied. I was fuming. Why had I let Riley leave last night? How stupid could I be? At least she was holding on. Only our group could see how frail she really was.
"Hey Guys," Max greeted us, standing awkwardly with his tray.
"Hi Max. Take a seat," Jake replied and various other words of welcome were exchanged.

"What lesson do you have next, Siren?" Roxy asked, attempting a return to normality.
"Music I think," Siren replied.
"Which room are you in? Riley, Roxy, Kevin and me all take music. Oh I do hope you're with us," Olivia gushed.
"Yeah, that would be cool," Riley agreed as Siren dragged a time-table from her bag.

In music, we all took our usual places and then realised that Siren had nowhere to sit. I walked up to the girl who sat at the end of our table and smiled in an apologetic manor.
"Hey. Do you mind if Siren sits here, Nina?" I asked.
"It's Ninen," The girl replied, her brown eyes narrowing in irritation.

"Oh sorry," Kevin said, "well, can he sit here?"

"Sure," she said, clearly annoyed and walked to the back of the room.

Music class was so dull for her, she'd rather listen to her hard rock, the stuff that drove everyone away. She put her feet up on the chair in front of her and opened her book. When class started, she didn't even bother to put the book down, she just kept on reading.

I laughed at something Roxy whispered to me and then turned my eyes down the end of the table where everyone else was sitting in a row.

"What are you looking at?" Olivia asked me as I stared at the girl who had moved. She looked up from her book and glared at me.

"Nothing," I said to my friends. "I'm looking at absolutely nothing."

My friends nodded and I drew my eyes away from the girl. "Stupid backstabbing piece of filth," I muttered under my breath.

Ninen sighed, almost sadly, and buried her face in her book again. Her and Riley had a history, a very unhappy history. Ignoring the searing pain in her gut she returned to her book, blocking out her thoughts.

Who needed friends anyway? She did what she wanted to do when she wanted to, she said what she wanted to say to whoever was around and didn't care if she hurt someone.

And thank God for the internet, she wouldn't survive without someone to talk to.
I just lost the game.

The house was empty when I arrived home. I threw my bag on the couch and opened the frezzer, pulling out a tub of ice-cream. I always ate ice-cream after bad things, and that day had been full of them.

"Are you home dear," mum shouted as she walked in the front door.

"In the kitchen," I yelled back.

Mum entered the kitchen and tutted at me spooning the ice-cream into my mouth, but she didn't stop me.

"Your father called last night," mum said. ("Yeah, I know," I muttered just quietly enough so that she couldn't hear) "He'd like to see you again. So would your sister. I was thinking the four of us could go out to dinner sometime."

I rolled my eyes. "No way mum. I'm not talking to them anymore."

Mum sighed and I put down the ice-cream container.

"Sometimes I don't know how I raised such an unhappy child."

I gritted my teeth to stop myself from yelling at her and ran into my room, burying my head in a pillow and screaming.

I arrived home, let myself in, threw my bag under the stairs and retreated into my room. I don't like to be alone in the house but, at this time in the evening, my father is still at work and my mother is out socialising at one of her clubs. Monday today. That means it's tea and biscuits at Mrs Davies' house.

With a sigh, I turned my music on but I'd forgotten to close the door. My eyes immediately stared across, through the door to that room. None of us have been in there. That's the only similarity of how we have all dealt with our pain. Dad has thrown himself into his work, coming home for the night and then staying an hour, maybe two before leaving again. Mum on the other hand has put all her work into the community. She volunteers, she socialises and she's a member of the village council.

I hear you ask how I deal with it. Well I don't. I look across at her room and already the tears tug at my eyes. I blame myself. How could I have not realised how unhappy she was? I mean, I knew she wasn't the happiest of girls but this bad? With a sigh I shook the thoughts away and slowly closed my bedroom door and turned my music up higher.

Siren walked in her house to see Ben sitting on the couch with his phone in one hand and the remote in the other.

"Yea, man you should've seen this girl." He was saying to the phone that he had on speaker.

"What was it like?" SHe heard the voice ask, she shivered, it was her dad.

"Not the best, but hell she's hott." Her dad laughed, "I think Siren is pissed at me now though."

"Why the hell would you care, she acts like that bitch mother of her's." Her dad snapped, Siren's eyes started to get watery and she pushed teh tears away.

"DON"T EVER SAY THAT" Ben snapped back, "SHe can be a little mean sometimes but she is my sister. SHE's your DAUGHTER."

"Your mother was supposed to abort her, but did she, NO." Ben snapped the phone shut.

"So, you just had to be the man-slut you are last night, huh?" She demanded. Ben jumped and spun around.

"Siren...I." He started

"I could've lost a bunch of new friends cause of you, luckely i didn't. Why do you always have to do that?" She asked,

"She didn't tell me she didn't want to so it wasn't my fault. I don't know, now you've got homework." He said leaving the room. Her mom walked down the stairs, high.

"Heeeeyyy...honey." Her mom laughed,

"DOn't hey me," Siren hissed walking up to her room. Her small beagle puppy meet her at her door. "Why does my life have to be so screwed up?" THe pup just whimpered.

Max was on his way home from karate practice. His dad had started a class in the local rec-center. Tonight his dad was sick so Max had to go to class and come home alone. The streets were dark and empty. Once every few minutes a car would drive by. He dicided to take a shortcut through an alley.

Max started hearing footsteps behind him as he walked through the darkness. He stopped and turned around. "Who's there?"

He saw a man pointing a gun at him. "Hand over all your money!"

"You don't want to do this. Just put down the gun." Max told him.

"I said hand over your money!"

Max always kept his wallet in his left pocket. Instead of taking it out he reached into his right pocket and retrieved some loose change. "I left my wallet at home, this is all I have."

The man held out his hand. "Hand it over!"

Max threw the change at the man. The man sheilded his face with his arm out of reflex. Max took this moment to catch him off guard. He ran up to him and grabbed his arm. He twisted it until the man dropped his gun. Max punched him in the side of his rib cage. The impact caused his lungs to collapse for a second, stopping him from breathing. The man dropped to the ground cluching his side.

Max picked up the gun and stood with one foot on the man's back. He examined the gun, careful not to pull the trigger, until he found the ammo release switch, or whatever they call it. He pushed the switch and took out the ammo clip. He threw both the gun and the ammo clip to different sides of the alley.

He pushed his foot into the man's back. "Now, get out of my sight before I decide to cause some damage you won't walk away from."

"OK man. I'm sorry. Just, please, don't hurt me!"

Max lifted his foot and let the man run off. As soon as he knew he was gone he sighed and began to collect the change he had thrown. "Man, second night out and I'm being mugged. Guess that'll teach me to use alleys."

Ninen eased into her apartment, trying not to alert her mom to her arrival.

"NINEN!!!" She boomed, how did she do that? "Get in here now!!!!" Ninen cringed, the voice was coming from her room. She musta found her daggers, or something.

Ninen pulled her sleeves down further to hide her scars.

"What is it mom?"

The arguement carried on for hours, nothing was resolved but Ninen ended up grounded.

She slammed her door and locked it. She was so sick of her mom doing this "what happened to the bright little child that used to be my daughter?" act.

Furious she grabbed her back pack, emptied the contents, put a few pairs of clothes in there, a book, and her dagger in it. She zipped it up and climbed out the window and onto the fire excape.

When she reached the bottom she jumped when a man ran passed her. She looked and saw someone else at the end of the alley. He looked vaguely familiar at the distance.

As Max picked up the last of his change he heard another set of footsteps approaching him. He readied himself in a fighting stance and faced the stranger. The girl jumped at his sudden reaction, almost crying out.

Max sighed and apologized, "Sorry, I thought you were with him."

"With who?" she asked.

"The guy that tried to mug me."

"What are you doing out here this late at night?" she asked.

"I was on my way home after karate practice. And you?"

"That's my business," she said, almost harshly.

Max noticed the bag slung over her shoulder. "Running away from home, huh? Won't your parents be worried?"

"Why do you care?" Ninen remembered where she had seen him before. He was with Riley and her friends during lunch today at school. "Wait, I've seen you in school."

"My name's Max. What's yours?"

"Ninen."

"It's dangerous for a young woman like yourself to be wandering the streets alone. Would you like me to escort you? Maybe then you can tell me why you're running away."

Ninen was tempted to show him her dagger, but thought better of it. "I'm going to the train station," she said and walked past him.

"Perfect, I need to pass by the station on my way home anyway." Together they walked out of the alley and down the street. Max asked, "So, you never did tell me why you're running away from home."

Riley

Half-way through dinner, the doorbell rang.

"I'll get it," said mum.

I shrugged and kept on eating while flicking through a magazine that was lying on the table. I thought it would be one of my friends, or maybe one of mum's. Well, it was one of mums. When she walked back into the kitchen, there were two people with her. A man and a girl. Dad and Jasmine.

"What the f***ing hell are you doing here?" I screamed after the initial shock of seeing them had sunk in. "I said I never wanted to see you again! I hate you!"

Mum looked mad, dad looked shock and Jasmine looked pittying on me.

"I see you haven't grown up these past few years, Ri," Jasmine said sadly.

"Don't talk to me you bitch," I muttered, and stormed out the front door before my stupid family could stop me.
