For Addie
June 9, 2007
Ridiculous remarks and smart-aleck suppositions with a side of sarcasm
Are the daily special every day
But your favorite meal is goldfish with the heads bitten off
And sometimes I wonder if you’re fourteen or four.
You’re proving Plato wrong and theorizing about Thoreau
Explaining Geometry theorems with greater clarity than Euclid
And contemplating the origins of mankind
(Fourteen going on forty).
Then you’re giggling about boys’ butts
Pulling out old dress-up clothes to create absurd outfits
And issuing death threats to the squirrels in the front yard
(Such a total teenager).
Your eyes fascinate me:
They’re brilliant and confused and determined
Standoffish and needy and proud
Dictatorial and submissive and serious
Sapient and curious and perfect
But most people just call them brown.
I know they don’t get you
(sometimes I don’t either)
But ten a.m study halls
Nightly runs
And your infrequent (but sincere) compliments
Are nestled comfortably inside me forever.
I guess some of us are just lucky like that
(“I am your personal trainer, not your friend!”)
To have such a dorky monotheist
For a sister and best friend.
