In the far south of Aevor lies Graystone, College of the Academically and Magically Gifted. Here, magic is derived from one main source: a dead, 100-foot God kept for spectacle in the lower gallery. Mara Ellison, a 2nd-year Divine Biology student, studies the Gods' anatomy daily. Until the day it starts showing signs of life.

The God was never supposed to wake. But as his systems begin to respond to her research, Mara is forced to question everything she'd learned so far at Graystone: her studies, Aevor's history, her relationships, and most of all-- the magic.

Mara Ellison was born and raised in Northwick, in a working household situated within walking distance of the harbor. Her father, Jonathan Ellison, worked irregular hours before his untimely and unexpected death, which occurred during Mara's early years [heart attack due to the overuse of magic]. The absence of a stable paternal figure altered the household dynamic significantly. Her mother, Katalan Ellison, assumed primary financial responsibility, while domestic and emotional responsibilities were informally redistributed among the daughters.
Of her siblings, Verina had the most direct influence on Mara's early development. Verina often substituted for parental authority to Mara when their mother was busy. Jasmyne contributed to maintaining the household, while the youngest, Frankie, remained largely dependent on the rest of them. Mara developed a habit of watching systems before engaging with them, as nothing really was stable in her life at that point.
Her admission to Graystone was solely because of her talents and not her lineage. Within Divine Biology, Mara has demonstrated a consistent ability to identify irregularities in patterns that others tend to overlook. Jonah comes from a family with established ties to medical and biochemical institutions operating in and around Northwick and Velmorah. The Valioupe name appears in multiple funding records connected to Graystone, particularly in relation to magically derived compounds distributed through the God in the lower chamber of the school. He was raised with an understanding of how magical resources are processed, regulated, and applied in broader societal ways. Unlike other students, Jonah does not present as overtly formal, and doesn't like to take things seriously half the time. This has led to many of his peers and professors underestimating him, even though he's indeed very smart.
Jonah's academic focus is the refinement and stabilization of magical derivatives. This places him in direct contact with the magic generated by "the Source" (The God). He has one known sibling, Moses Valioupe, who has remained more closely aligned with his family's expectations. His friends and professors will often mention how different they are, personality-wise.
In his free time, Jonah enjoys hanging out with River and playing chess. Jonah and River have known each other since they started at Graystone, and have been roommates ever since. Since Jonah met Jade, he's had an infatuation with her. He often bugs Mara about getting him a date, but Jade never budges.

River was raised in Halbrecht, an industrial city known for integrating magical systems into its buildings. His family is known for assisting with structural reinforcement and engineering. His grandfather, Preston Hayes, contributed to lots of large-scale stabilization projects and is recognized nationally in Aevor.
His father, Quentin Hayes, continues to work in structural engineering, while his siblings have pursued related professions. River's early schooling focused on how structures respond under stress, how failure manifests, and how it can be prevented. At Graystone, River specializes in divine metallurgy: the interaction between magical systems and other materials. His work involves analyzing how structures--particularly those containing or surrounding "the Source"--absorb and redistribute magic. He is less concerned with the biological parts of studying "the Source" and more focused on its impact on the environment and people around it.
River doesn't really "enjoy" school. He participates when necessary, completes assigned work, and avoids unnecessary attention. However, he's smarter than he thinks. He participates in lots of extracurriculars at Graystone, such as rugby, soccer, and political clubs. He's also extremely physically fit and spends a lot of his time working out with Jonah.

Jade was raised in Aevabrooke, though her family originally came from the eastern coastal regions. Her childhood was split between two very different environments: the loud hustle of Aevabrooke's trade districts and the quieter, softer atmosphere her mother tried to maintain inside the home. After the death of her mother, that balance disappeared almost entirely. She was never loud. Never particularly emotional outwardly. Jade spent most of her time on rooftops, nor near waterways. Her water affinity manifested unusually young during a coastal storm that flooded part of Aevabrooke's eastern district.
Following her mother's death, Jade became increasingly withdrawn from almost everything, including her friends. Her older brother Rin developed a habit of covering for her socially, while her younger sister Quinn often remained the only person capable of pulling her out of her low moments. Their father didn't make it any better and instead pushed discipline heavily after the loss, believing routine would stabilize the household. In Jade's case, it just made her spiral.
By her teens, she had already developed a fixation on environmental irregularities--weather fluctuations, tide inconsistencies, changes in atmospheric pressure. Teachers initially mistook this for anxiety until she correctly predicted a localized magical collapse near Aevabrooke's lower district nearly two days before it occurred. That prediction changed everything for her. The event itself was small compared to larger disasters in Aevor's history, but it was the fact that Jade knew that impressed her mentors. Graystone recruited her less than a year later.
At the university, Jade entered Astromagical Engineering and adapted to the Observatory almost immediately. That unsettled and intimidated a lot of people and students. Jade herself does not fully understand how she knows certain things. She treats her intuition like a flaw in the system rather than a gift, which is part of why she pushes herself so relentlessly academically. If she can quantify it, she can control it. In her head, this "second" gift is just related to her connection to water. Socially, Jade isn't a people-person. She has close relationships with only a handful of people, particularly Mara. Many students assume she's cold when, in reality, Jade simply spends most of her energy holding herself together.

His mother worked within legal administration, his father advised magical regulation councils, and his uncle, Professor Harrison Moreau, maintained close ties to Graystone University long before Luca enrolled there himself. His telekinetic affinity manifested early-- objects simply moved where he wanted them to.
At Graystone, Luca entered the Arcane Law and Governance program and quickly developed a reputation for sharp intelligence, controlled charisma, and an ability to dismantle arguments easily. He's in all the highest honors and accelerated classes and somehow knows everyone's business and gossip because he listens more than he actually talks. He has a lot of friends, and most professors like him.

As a child, Theon was charismatic, difficult to discipline, and super good at reading people. People often complained that he could redirect attention away from himself almost effortlessly, even before his affinity fully developed. Seleste Rowena was raised in Luecium alongside her twin sister, Summer. Her mother, Charlotte, came from a family with ties to mourning rites and spirit practices common in southern Aevor. Her stepfather, Quincy Bridget, worked within preservation services connected to burial archives and memorial grounds. Seleste has always been gifted in recognizing signs of spirit perception. Her upbringing was heavily influenced by her grandmother's belief that spirits were not inherently frightening, only existing. As a result, Seleste developed an unusually calm relationship with death and the supernatural.
She entered Curse Pathology at Graystone. Seleste specializes in spiritual residue, hauntings, cursed objects, and post mortem magical artifacts. Seleste has demonstrated an unusual ability to perceive residual presences and emotional imprints within heavily corrupted spaces, including areas near Lower Weston -- near "The Source". Foundation and Location

Officially founded 412 years ago by the First Foundation, though portions of the campus predate the university by centuries. Graystone sits directly across from Blackwater Point. The campus was deliberately built above the resting place of the Source, a preserved divine body housed in an observatory beneath Weston Hall. On clear days, the University's towers are visible from Northwick's harbor miles away.

Reputation in Aevor

Graystone is considered the most prestigious magical institution in Aevor. Students arrive from every region of the country, hoping to gain admission. Acceptance rates are notoriously low (only 19%), and graduation rates are even lower. Gwyndeer dominates most of Graystone's application brackets, whereas regions like Northwick and Aevabrooke run a close second.

Students who successfully graduate and excel from Graystone join Aevor's highest ranks. Whether that's working for the University itself as a Master of the Arts, fighting in Aevor's esteemed military, or joining Aevor's unrelentless governmental system -- everyone who makes it out usually makes it big.

The university is responsible for:

Most magical medicine in Aevor
Research (broad)
Government magical regulation
Military development
Divine biological study
Historical preservation and translation

Major Locations Within Graystone

Weston Hall
The oldest building on campus. Most students believe Weston Hall serves as an administrative and academic center, and only a handful know it was built directly over the Source. The deeper one travels beneath Weston Hall, the older the architecture becomes. This is where Mara, Jade, and Jonah's dorms are, and where Mara does most of her studies.
The Lower Gallery
The chamber housing the Source. Only theology students, select faculty, and specially approved researchers are permitted access -- the shape of the room resembles a cathedral-sized cavern carved into a mountain. There's an upper floor (where Mara and her friends usually observe) and a lower floor (where researchers and theology students work). The god lies in the middle, stretching almost the length of the whole room.
The Enlightment Archives
Graystone's restricted library, only accessible to history students + falculty.

The North Observatory
Home to Astromagical Engineering majors and is built at the highest point on campus -- most conveniently to watch the weather and stars. Jade studies here constantly and Mara + Jonah will often come here to talk and overthink. From this point on campus, Blackwater Point is most visible.
The Forge District
This part of campus is located over East Bridge and is the furthest from the commonplaces and administrative buildings. Not to be forgotten, it's home to divine metallurgy and magical engineering students across Graystone. It's a less updated part of the campus -- buildings are made of old rustic stone, and the roads fade to dirt before entering the district.
Regenerative Complex
Classrooms and lecture buildings for divine biochemistry and divine biology students. In each student's earlier years at Graystone, a lot of their scientific core classes are held here. This building is located in the central part of Graystone near the courtyard and dormitories.

Secret Societies
The Collegium of the First Foundation
Officially founded alongside Graystone 412 years ago. Unofficially, records suggest the Collegium is older than the university itself by nearly a century. Most historians believe Graystone was built for the Collegium rather than the other way around, which a lot of student ponder on. To the public of Aevor, the Collegium is an academic society that enhances:

Historical preservation
Archaeological recovery (artifacts, bones, bodies, etc)
Archive maintenance
Artifact authentication
Cultural continuity of magic in Aevor

Members oversee many of Graystone's museums, historical collections, and preservation projects. Though there is a deeper meaning to the Collegium, and Aevor's government would never publicly admit it. The Collegium exists for one reason in their eyes -- to ensure the Source never wakes. Its members are responsible for maintaining the Continuity Cycle, a collection of rituals, biological medicine, and systems created by the Collegium and government officials to preserve the God's "asleep" state.

A comprehensive guide to Dracology

The Origin of Dragons in Aevor
Dragons have existed in Aevor before history books even existed. They have witnessed the rise of kingdoms, the fall of dynasties, the creation of Graystone, and the countless generations that followed. In many regions of the country, dragons are regarded as idols that influence culture and traditions in Aevor that often stretch further back than those of humanity. While dragons vary greatly in appearance, they all share several defining characteristics. They have:

Extremely long lifespans
High magical affinities
Advanced intelligence
The ability to form bonds with humans
Natural connections to the magical currents throughout Aevor

A mature dragon is capable of understanding multiple languages, solving complex problems, and forming emotional relationships as deep as those between humans. According to the oldest surviving legends, dragons emerged during the Divine Age (before history itself), when magic flowed freely across the world and wasn't contained by a single god. The stories say that the first dragons were born from the breath of the gods themselves. Back then, there was a whole pantheon.

Dragon Society
Dragons do not live solitary lives. Most belong to social groups known as "Flights". A Flight functions like an extended family and may consist of anywhere from three dragons to several hundred, and maintains territories spanning entire regions. Within a Flight, younger dragons are mentored by elders. Elders usually lead the Flight and teach dragonlings to survive while doing so. The oldest dragon within a Flight is often referred to as the Skyelder, and they serve as guardians to both their Flight and the city they inhabit. These elders are picked through battle.
