teenage bones & old souls

when the light of the moon becomes the only sanctuary
and climbing to balance the air
is the only way to get oxygen,
bones turn brittle and the heart turns bitter
but the soul stays old.

i try so hard to tally up
my sins upon my skin.
like maybe if i call my bluffs,
it won't hurt to give in.
when all the starlight's slipped away
and the world seems hemmed with shadows,
i pray it will not stay this way
so i do not risk the gallows.
happiness slips through my fingers
like sunlight through the sky.
the darker feelings linger
like a nightmare's lullaby.

it doesn't feel or seem natural to have?

not understanding
that we no longer connect the way we used to?
i have
moved on
from the type of friendship
you gave me,
the one that consists of
one person always letting the other
push them (the one)
to become the person they (the other) are.
i have moved
away from that
and the pain it gives me.
i am not glad that it pains you, too.
but i refuse to be sorry
for putting you through something you put me through everyday
just by my goodbye.

canon camera in my hand,
my eyes gracing the land,
midday sunlight casts it's glow
as i squint and crouch down low.
knee-high grass above my shins,
peace carries through the din.
the shutter clicks, perspective's fixed,
i wander and i win.

sunburned
golden eyes and sunburned skin,
the fire burns from the outside in.
layered over my arms, face, and chest,
even ice can't put the burning to rest.
it lingers heavily in elbow creases,
those little inner corners tucked into ceaseless
cycles of burning and callous heat
even the chill night air can not beat.
a day of teenage fun was won,
but the moon lost it's battle with the sun.

avi, happy poeting!

photographer's daughter is a neat poem that instantly caught my eye; photography is such a poetic discipline! I've always found it so riveting when poets write about other mediums of art in their work -

the shutter clicks, perspective's fixed,
i wander and i win.


"winning" is a great verb here! I interpreted it to mean I’m here, I’m paying attention, I’m alive in this moment, I succeeded in preserving a moment that mattered, etc. capturing something meaningful, as it exists in time, can be a kind of "victory" over it, for sure.

these all carry this feeling of longing / some kind of ache while still balancing "positive" moments, like "teenage fun" / going out with friends, which feels very accurate to the teenage experience. nothing is ever wholly black or white. can't wait to see what else you write!

@avimoon - you've masterfully captured a few "ordinary" moments (dandelions, sun-burns) and managed to make them poetic! The rhyming in the sun-burn poem was excellent - and I also really enjoyed your poem that captured the experience of taking a photo (it felt like art within art - > or a picture in a picture if you will!) Hope to read some more this month! Thank you for sharing! :)
