we have octagons and octopuses. so why is october the tenth month?

anyways.

char a[7];
strcpy(a, all-caps word); // assume all-caps word is null-terminated

printf("thoughts on whether i am %s, of having had %s, of what to do when they are %c%c%c%c.\n", a, a, a[4], a[2], a[1], a[0]);

(indeed, i am programming in C for a class, why do you ask? xD)

Genug

Últimamente he tenido muchas lenguas en que puedo expresarme.
El inglés, el español, y ahora ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch. Aber es ist nicht genug. Nie genug.
Lately I've been running out of time. I keep wondering if I could be more competent, more skilled if I chose to focus on one thing. But it brings me joy to learn languages and write an essay on dichotomies and cycles in a passage from Beowulf, just as it brings me joy to give a talk on esoteric programming languages and solve substitution ciphers in cybersecurity challenges.
And maybe this isn't poetic enough, or polished enough, or raw enough. But maybe I've also had enough of wondering what's enough, qué es bastante, wie viel ist genug.
Es tut mir leid. No tengo suficiente Zeit para terminar esto

Sorry. I don't have enough time to finish this

deadlock
(also, studying for my operating systems midterm)

in a concurrency context: when one thread waits for another, which is waiting for another, which is waiting for another, and so on.
perhaps you were expecting me to extend the metaphor to my life. how i’m waiting on a response from you. or waiting to see if any of those lines i cast will return with fish that are answers that i can give to those waiting on me. but i’m afraid the metaphors are getting jumbled up in my brain like a tin of nuts and bolts and cookies tonight.
speaking of food. deadlock can lead to starvation, which is when a process continuously waits for resources it never gets.
it’s rather interesting how we speak of processes like humans. there are child and parent processes. a process becomes an orphan when its parent exits before it. it becomes a zombie if it has exited but its parent has not waited for it.
i think i will dream of deadlocks tonight.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love your poetry and how you just take things and turn them sideways and it just works? The web poem was great, yes, but I love Genug so much.
