i bind my fingers in sewing patch ribbons
as i look at the sun outside my window
meandering cloth between my fingers
winding and overlapping
a homemade oven mit
to replace well used shreds of cloth
i take my time

but i will always be burned in the end

the sunlight reflects on my windshield
like a miniature atom bomb touched down
and the light hits my eyes
in a million refractory glimmers
and i keep flying towards it
across the road across the sky
across the- across the- across-

WHACk

crashing crackling crunching
everything's unpleasant except
that pretty tinkling of broken glass
as it glides and skips over pavement
and the wheels keep rolling upside down
as i keep soaring towards the sun

the water reflecting off your back
settles over your skin in a dull blue glow
like moonlight and you cast no shadow
sunlight pours like ichor from your eyes
and lights your face in ambient orange
even your shadows are pools of honey
you hold no darkness

my mother tried to hold me underwater
until the bubbles stopped when i was five
maybe thats why i'm obsessed with drowning

your silken hair looks like the perfect
riverbed to dive into temptation too grave
your golden curls entangle my fingers like rapids

and drag me down into soft earthen skin your
teeth scuff me like jagged rocks nails scratch like twigs
caught in your root system so far from the surface

losing breath until i'm gasping for air i can't help but notice
the sun looks so close this far underwater as i suffocate
in the whirlpool of your cold electric blue eyes

the sun in my hand a weight
dragging me down into the grave
i wanted to bear its grace
even as its seeping away my health
a spell i cast so great
its tearing me away from myself
beautiful and blissful in its wealth
worth it if only to see heaven
before it fades into hell

Gorgeous visuals ( both in the imagery and illustration pairings), love the continuity and sense of depth while dealing with similar themes here. Like Icarus the sense of reaching too close to something forbidden or death cycles around. The premise of this one was very evocative in particular:

"my mother tried to hold me underwater
until the bubbles stopped when i was five
maybe thats why i'm obsessed with drowning"

Looking forward to following along fig, keep writing! Good luck this month.

wax running down the slopes of your wrists
like golden blood, ichor, wine of the gods
your palms are scalded and folded inwards
upwards tulips your soft tan fingers are curled
softly in acceptance as streams of hot wax
drip down like acid rain feather light
sharp sunrays in morning eyes

the sun is broken but im still out here hand outstretched
like a plant seeking another angle twisting myself
towards a stray beam of light that i may never reach
suffocation is a slow way to fall

i am a spot of light in a black sky
the last reflection of hope
in a dead world

Today's drawing is so great! You got the nose just right
As for the poem, a line that stuck out to me was
suffocation is a slow way to fall
You just put it so well to how Icarus might have felt on his decent. Great work!
I won't go down by myself, but I'll go down with my friends
I'm taking back the life you stole
Came a time when every star fall brought you to tears again

the ocean is a gaping maul beautiful
and terrifying it swallows life
i am perched upon a prepice of disarray
reaching for a globe a strung up light
in this vastness the sun is just
a hanging ornament and i am just a man

Hello fatherfig! This is such an interesting and well-executed thread. I love how each poem takes its own angle on the Icarus motif. Here's some of my favourite lines from the most recent poems:

your palms are scalded and folded inwards
upwards tulips your soft tan fingers are curled

I really like the word "tulips" here. It's an image perfect for showing the 'softness' of the gesture, and it's a good contrast with "scalded". The links in that poem between wax and ichor are really neat as well. I feel like those really show the role of the sun for Icarus as both being life-giving and destructive.

the sun is broken but im still out here hand outstretched
like a plant seeking another angle twisting myself

I like the plant metaphor for this image of Icarus in a post-apocalyptic world (or that's what comes to mind for me when I read this poem anyway!) "im still out here" feels very grounded and personal, and Icarus being reimagined as a plant in general is a fresh take on the myth that I really enjoy.

in this vastness the sun is just
a hanging ornament and i am just a man

And now the focus is on the ocean! That's another cool highlighting of an element of the Icarus myth (or what I remember of it at least, which is that Icarus flew on wax wings over an ocean). I love the quoted lines and the accompanying drawing. They transform the idea of the sun as the biggest thing that's been prevalent in the poetry series so far, and show another perspective where both Icarus and the sun are engulfed by this wider world/universe of the water. I like the way these lines could also draw a comparison between the phrase "hanging ornament" and "man".

Great going this NaPo - keep writing!
