"Alright, you three, what's it going to be?" asked Mrs. Kane

"5," chorused the three of them before they looked at each other, surprised to have picked the same thing before breaking off into laughter.

"Well if I am reading this correctly, we now have our verdict. It's going to be 5. It was a close call between 5 and 17 but 5 it shall be. Since everyone got a fair chance I don't believe there should be any objections?" said Mrs. Kane raising her eyebrows. The complete silence that followed was a testament to how focused everyone was on escaping.

"Alright, we'll move forward with that first then. Picking five volunteers to be taking up this task. But before that is done we all have to first agree that we will help these five under any and all circumstances. The five that will be selected shortly will be carrying the hopes of all of humanity on them when they set out on their mission so being petty and jealous of them is not going to be an option."

At this point Aria tuned out the speech from her mother. I hope she doesn’t go on for an hour. Such a pointless task. As if humans would ever unite with no strings attached. Aria decided to see if she could spot anyone that might go against what was being said at the moment.

As far as she could tell, most of the people listening were actually nodding along to the speech, seemingly taking everything to heart. She reasoned that was probably because no one had been chosen yet. She was jolted out of her thoughts by everyone starting to clap and she tuned back into the speech.

“..... start selecting five of us to be carrying out this mission.”

Harry had to restrain himself from jumping up and yelling ’I'm in!' like his brain was telling him to. This is going to be the greatest moment in my life until of course someone actually makes a successful escape. Harry saw an ancient cardboard box being put on the stage. They must have raided all the ancient human technology they could find. Where on Earth was a cardboard box even stored in this place?

"So everyone that did in fact volunteer has had their names written on pieces of paper and put into this box," began Mrs. Kane, “We divided depending on the skills so to speak of everyone that volunteered. The categories are going to be only the essentials now that we've decided to go with just a party of five. I don’t think I have to remind you that by doing this it will be a totally random pick and there will be no outside factors influencing this. Let me start now without wasting any more time.”

Harry was at the edge of his seat when his mother dipped her hand inside the box to select the first name. Please be me. Please be me. He watched with bated breath as Mrs. Kane opened up the first slip of paper and read out the name.

"Kathryn Summers"

Harry couldn't help but let out a disappointed sigh before he joined in the round of applause that had started. He tried to dredge up anything that he could remember about the girl. Think was one of the best at tech. Worked with Samantha I think. But was she better or worse? Why have I forgotten this now?

His train of thought was interrupted by Mrs. Kane calling out to Kathryn.

"Ms. Summers if you can come here please. You're the one chosen from those that had some experience with technology. That's going to be vital especially with the sort of weakness that we’re planning on exploiting. So if you would like to back out now, no one would hold it against you? If not, Good Luck."

The girl in question walked onto the stage. She stood at around medium height, with shoulder length black hair hanging loose around her face. She was doing her best to smile, her brown eyes wide with surprise.

Mrs. Kane waved her over to her and asked her several quick questions turning away from the microphone. After she had given the girl a two-minute interrogation she sent Kathryn off to sit down in a row that had been set up surrounding the stage.

After Kathryn settled down, Mrs. Kane reached into the box again. Harry once again couldn't stop himself from wishing that he was going to be the next one chosen.

The mantra in his head was back as Mrs. Kane started to read out the second name that had been picked.

"Ryan Haynes"

At this one Harry had to scratch his head in confusion. Why have I not heard that name before? Harry racked his brains to see if he could remember anything about him from class but found that he could not. Must be someone who flew under the radar then...or didn't attend at all. Having been unsuccessful in getting information out of his brain Harry settled down to watch what his mom had to announce about Ryan.

"So this is kind of a broad category after this for the other three members. We just need one person that's good with tech and one leader, the others can be just about anyone that's competent in general things. Ryan here is one of them. He's done fairly well in most of the subjects and is certainly qualified for selection. This is from over two hundred possible choices so it is quite surprising to see two of the same age being chosen but I suppose most of those that qualified were in a fairly small age range because of well...I believe no elaboration would be required there."

On that slightly somber note, she ended her announcement for Ryan as the boy walked up from the crowd. He was one of the largest teenagers that Harry had ever seen. He resembled an actual exoskeleton in size and build, towering over everyone on stage.

Well no surprises about no one worrying about him getting chosen. That man looks like he can take out an alien bare handed. Harry joined in the clapping to acknowledge the slight bow the boy gave them all before stepping back down to sit down next to where Kathryn was sitting. By this point, someone in the crowd had already rearranged the chairs down there so that now there were only five seats all facing the front of the stage.

Once everyone's applause and the various murmurs throughout the room had died down, Mrs. Kane reached into the box once more to pick the third member of the team.

At this point Harry was praying to all the probability classes he’d been in, wishing his chance of getting picked wasn’t as tiny as it currently was.

"Daisy Danvers"

That name made everything in his mind go blank for a second and his heart skipped a beat. Suddenly, he wasn't sure if he should be clapping or crying. He settled for cheering because that seemed like the more reasonable thing to do and started clapping with the rest as Mrs. Kane began her description of which abilities Daisy would be a part of the group for.

He didn't hear a word of it though. It was all tuned out as he looked to Daisy. She didn’t look much better off. Her mouth was stretched in a smile but her eyes betrayed her true feelings on the matter. She seemed dangerously close to tears. He gave her the bravest smile that he could muster hoping it would reassure her that everything was fine. The two of them continued to look at each other.

Aria cleared her throat behind them and Harry jumped, snapping back to reality as he remembered where they were and what they were supposed to be doing. Daisy gave him one last smile, this one genuine, before she walked off in the direction of the stage. Harry followed her movements as she squeezed past chairs, pushing empty ones out of her way as she made her way towards the center of the room where Mrs. Kane welcomed her on stage with a smile.

The clapping intensified as Daisy took a seat next to Ryan. Mrs. Kane turned once more to the box. It didn't matter that the odds were heavily stacked against that possibility, Harry was practically on the edge of his seat, ready to run, hoping against hope for his name to be the next one. Please be me. I can’t lose Daisy. No. No. No. Daisy will be fine, no matter what. They will succeed.

Mrs. Kane pulled out the fourth name for the team. As she unfolded the paper, her eyes registered barely disguised. shock. Huh. What would actually cause her to be shocked? Is there some kind of...no that's not possible. She would never approve such a name to be put in there to begin with. Unless...ohhh...Aria.

Just as the thought finished hitting Harry with full force, Mrs. Kane confirmed his worst fears.

"Ariana Kane"

He found himself on the verge on tears. Aria gave him the same look that Daisy had given him just moments ago. Things were really taking a turn. The people being chosen were defying all logic and probability and somehow also turning him into an emotional mess. Unless that last name truly defies all the odds. There is always hope. These thoughts fixed firmly in his mind, Harry steeled himself to see Aria go up on the stage as their mom finished describing how Aria was going to be the one leading the team.

Aria acknowledged everyone's applause and then made her way down to the other three. She sat next to a beaming Daisy that was clapping particularly hard. That managed to bring a smile back to Harry's face. At least she won't be alone. That's something. I'll have mom and dad at least.

Mrs. Kane reached into the box to take out the last and final name. This was it. The moment of history that Harry had been looking forward to for so long. He held his breath, hoping against hope that somehow it would end up being the name that he'd been waiting to hear all evening. Mrs. Kane unfolded that paper and the expression on her face told Harry all that he needed to know.

There was no way that the shocked expression currently on Mrs. Kane's face could be created by any other name being on the paper. Still not quite daring to hope he waited as Mrs. Kane managed to compose herself and read out the name.

"Harris Kane"

The name echoed out to a momentary silence as everyone tried to process the sheer coincidence of the team that had been selected but it was quickly drowned out by applause once everyone realized that the full team was now chosen.

Harry was feeling happiness like he'd never felt before. Somehow defying what probability would have you believe, the three of them had all been chosen to go on this crazy adventure and Harry wouldn't have it any other way. Escaping from the hell hole that was called a camp would be one thing but if he was going to do that with anybody it would have to be the team that he had been a part of since he was old enough to be asked to work.

Harry shakily stood up, still not a hundred percent convinced that all of this was real. After pinching himself more than a few times to confirm that he wasn’t dreaming in bed, he began to make his way towards the stage. Somehow that simple task seemed daunting now that he realized what was going to happen. Mrs. Kane started to talk about how the last person was from the general category again. Harry tuned it out. The speech was meaningless now. All that he could think of now was that today they were going to start a plan that would see him out of this camp. That is if we succeed. Harry dismissed the nagging voice in his head. We will do this. We will do this. Together.

He made his way onto the stage and then clambered up, leaping up onto it in one smooth motion rather than walking up the small ramp they had set up using stool. His entrance got the most cheers so far. Harry gave them all a bow as he walked towards his waiting mother. He didn’t know where his sudden bravado was coming from but he rode it out as he smiled at his mother.
One look at her expression however and it all collapsed right back to wherever it had come from. Mrs. Kane looked close to tears as she pulled Harry into a hug and clutched him tightly.

"This is going to be much harder for me than I expected," she whispered into his ear. Harry could only hug her tighter.
"Me too mom. Me too. I can't imagine how horrible it is going to be for you when the two of us leave but one thing I can promise you is that if we get out, no matter what, we’re all going to come back safe."

"Not if Harry," she said," when...now go take a seat next to your sister. I think I have some announcing that I need to wrap up."
Harry gave his mother one last squeeze before jumping off the stage the same way he had gotten on, still ignoring the staircase. He made his way over to where the other four were seated.

Kathryn gave him a small smile. Ryan only gave the barest of nods, his facial muscles refusing to show any emotion whatsoever. Harry gave an equally imperceptible nod back to him and smiled. Then his eyes moved on to Daisy. Her usual cheery smile greeted him, the fake one that had been plastered on for the stage was long gone.

He returned with a beaming smile of his own. The last person in line was Aria. His sister just proceeded to tilt her head towards Daisy and then wink. Of course that's what she is going to bring up even in a situation like this.

He chose to take the higher route on that occasion and simply rolled his eyes at his sister before he sat down on the fifth and final spot that was there in the first row. It was now official. For better or for worse they were going to be humanity's hope in this particular escape attempt. Hopefully this one goes better than the last few did.

Harry looked towards the stage in front of them, now actually listening to what his mother had to say.

"And so we've managed to select our team now," she began after waiting for everyone to settle down," for obvious security reasons, it's better if they’re the only ones who know of how the rest of this goes down, so I kindly ask the rest of you to leave. Thank you so much for volunteering. It helps out a lot. We might need you all for a few other distractions later which we’ll hold a separate meeting for. Stay safe out there.”

There were several quick farewells as those inside trickled out in groups of three, making sure to have at least twenty seconds or so separating the various groups. Harry assumed they would probably increase that gap at the outer door to ensure that none of them ended up caught.

It took a good ten minutes for the last group to finally exit the room, the door shutting with the same mechanical whirr as before. One the last click sounded, Harry turned back towards the stage.

“Alright then guys, looks like it’s going to be the five of you. Shall we start by taking a look at this flaw that we managed to detect in the system. I think that's what you've all probably been waiting for so I won't drag this out any longer. We’ll discuss the other important things after. Alex, show us what you found."

Mr. Summers took center stage, climbing up from where he’d been sitting behind the stage. He took the offered microphone with a smile. The air felt heavy as everyone's anticipation grew in preparation for the information that was about to be released.

"So this is the first time I'm talking to so many people at once," began Mr. Summers, in an attempt to break the tension. Harry was the only one that laughed.

"So you all know about the spaceship that recently crashed into that new gate?" He waited as everyone murmured a quick yes. He continued," and of course thanks to these three here, that was a massive coincidence by the way. That makes you wonder about fate. Anyway I am going off topic. So these three were nice enough to report that the door had some damage even after the repairs and then blah blah a lot of things happened and I was finally notified."

At this point he paused for a few seconds, to acknowledge the three of them and Mrs. Kane with a nod.

"So once I was finally informed I made my way out at night and went to check on the damage that had been done. And I definitely found some damage. Oh did I find some damage. This is going to be an amazing escape if it works out."

Harry had to stop himself from jumping out of the chair and demanding that Alex stop beating around the bush. Just spit it out already.

"So from what I could see, the wiring in the door was the thing that had actually suffered lasting damage. Now at first I was pretty skeptical that we could find anything useful because large damage would obviously tip off the aliens but, what I found seems to be pretty much the best case scenario. So essentially, I won't go into the full technical breakdown of what happened for obvious reasons, but keeping things simple, what had happened was that one of the wires that transmit data towards the aliens for them to observe things and operate the door itself was severely damaged on the inside. There was just about enough information going through it to give them a single bit of data from the camera system and also operate the door."

"So how does that help us escape?" asked Daisy.

"I am getting to that," said Mr. Summers," I just want you all to have some context for exactly what I am about to tell you after this. Sorry if that is taking maybe a bit too long."

"It's okay, just continue," said Mrs. Kane, stepping forward," and no more interruptions please. All the questions can be asked at the end of this. At the moment, we are trying to get through this briefing as efficiently as we possibly can. We can't afford to waste any time with the sort of situation that we are in."

There were several apologies after that as Daisy and Mr. Summers both apologized first to each other and then to Mrs. Kane. Harry couldn't help but facepalm at this point. Wasting time apologizing for wasting time...ahh. He managed to avoid tearing his hair out.

Mr. Summers cleared his throat and continued," So now that we've gotten that out of the way let me tell you exactly what that damage means for us and what we can do to exploit it."

Daisy was getting impatient along with the rest of them as Mr. Summers continued dragging out the announcement of what they would be able to do with the flaws that had been found. First a goofy entrance and now this nonsense.

"So what the plan should be for getting past this door is a strategy that we've thought of using many times but avoided due to the sheer difficulty of some parts of the plan. Now this damage of course makes this much more doable."

He paused yet again making Daisy now develop the need to punch the man for making it sound like he was narrating some kind of suspenseful horror story.

"What I believe would be the best strategy and what we did in fact all manage to agree on..." he paused and turned so that Mrs. Kane and the others on the stage could all nod to confirm that statement.

"So essentially we will need to trick the aliens into believing that nothing is happening when in reality a lot of things are going to happen to that door. In order to do that what we will do is add our own little piece to the wiring to send a prerecorded version of the day’s camera footage so that the aliens will actually see a door standing still for 24 hours when in reality the door is going to be shorted open and then we're going to escape. And yes the data feedback for the movement of the door will also be replaced by a prerecorded version. And I think that is about all we've managed to completely finalize, there are definitely other details that we have to work on today before this meeting is done. So now I think it is time for questions?"

Mr. Summers raised his eyebrows at Mrs. Kane, who gave a nod before stepping forward to take the microphone from him.
"I think I will be taking it from here," she said," thank you for explaining all of that for us. Now you can take your seat again as we continue our planning. I believe we will have at least four or five things to finalize before we can head out."

Mr. Summers was clearly not happy about being sent back down if his frown was any indication but he plastered a smile onto his face, nodded and then made his way down from the stage.

Daisy had to try very hard not to cheer as he stepped down from the stage. There was silence for the next couple of minutes as Mrs. Kane waited for everyone to process the information and decide if they had a question or not.

Much to Daisy's surprise, it looked like everyone had either understood the whole plan perfectly or were waiting for the full plan to be laid out to ask questions.

After the two minutes, Mrs. Kane cleared her throat and waited another ten seconds. There was still nothing.

"Okay let's get started on finalizing our plans now. I believe the first stage that we need to be addressing is how exactly we are going to acquire the prerecorded data and how exactly we shall be getting the data to be transmitted along the wire. Those two are the biggest hurdles that we need to be hopping over and I feel like deciding on exactly how we pull those steps off will also shape our eventual final schedule for the escape so this is vital to finalize now. Aria, how long do you think you three will take to clear out the remaining parts of the ship?"

"Umm...well I'm not sure about an exact number for it but I believe at the rate that we are maintaining it maybe a week, possibly two depending on what material that hull is made of. The cabin area seemed pretty easy to cut through but the other areas, especially near the wings and the nose might be tougher," she said, standing up.

"Thank you Aria," said Mrs. Kane, gesturing for her to take her seat, "so I believe if we stick with the worst case scenario, we have to make this escape within the next five days, while some part of the wreckage is still near that gate. So let’s start firing ideas then for getting our hands on that prerecorded footage."

"How about that drone that you mentioned when getting that footage?" came the first suggestion from Kathryn.

"That was my plan exactly," added a second voice, this one recognizable as Mr. Summers. Of course he is going to think of the drone. He built that thing if the rumors are true. It looks like there might have been another meeting where that was discussed in detail. Maybe Harry and Aria know something. I have to ask.

"Well that idea definitely has merit as I told Mr. Summers here when he suggested it but it just seems like it will be a lot of work, trying to maneuver that thing to get footage out of the cameras. We need something that is simpler and just a lot more straightforward so that it can be easily done by just about anyone. We're not going to trick the system without us all working together. This idea will restrict the number of people that can participate. And we have to get footage from a lot of places and fast."

"We could always try to steal some ladders," suggested Aria," although the logistics of how we're going to steal those and use those is probably too complicated. Okay I feel stupid for even suggesting it now."

"It's not too bad of a suggestion Aria, some kind of ladder like contraption is what we need although yes, stealing is not just really difficult, even if we were successful that is likely going to lead to all manner of issues. I don't think I have to tell you what might happen if they suspect that the escape attempt was an effort on the part of the entire camp."

"Oh wait a minute, we're going to make this escape attempt look like it was doable by the five of them?" asked Harry.

"Yes, that's exactly what we're going to do. Or else what's going to happen is that they are going to end up finding a way to punish us all for it and that is not going to be pleasant no matter what they come up with. A successful escape from their prison would be a complete failure for them and they will do their best to ensure that anyone who helped feels that displeasure."

Daisy gulped. Oh my God I completely forgot about that. Of course they're not going to go easy on everyone that's left behind. Even if it looks like we escaped without help there is no way that they are not going to target our parents. Oh no. Why did things have to get so complicated all of a sudden?

She felt someone take her hand and give it a squeeze. She turned to see Harry who gave her a small smile. Her eyes widened. How on Earth did he suddenly appear next to me? Wasn't Aria the one next to me?

"Hey...I asked Aria to move to my chair so I could sit next to you. She had a very big smirk on her face but I thought that finding out what's bothering you so much would be worth it," he said. She couldn't help but give him a beaming smile in return.

"And how exactly did you come to the conclusion that I am worried Mr. Kane?"

"Magic," he replied, winking," and I am referring to the magical abilities that come with being friends for several years."

"Really?" asked Daisy, a slight frown one her face as she tapped her chin thoughtfully. "And how exactly does this ability work?"

"Well you see, your eyebrows…" began Harry, but stopped as Daisy raised her hands in surrender.

"Okay, I don't actually need the full explanation," she said," I was just joking."

"Hmm...are you a hundred percent sure that you really don't want to hear the full story?" asked Harry.

"Definitely not right now Harry," she said, letting out a sigh and leaning back.

"They'll be okay you know," he said, giving her hand another squeeze.

"Who?" asked Daisy. Can this boy read my mind?

"Uhh our parents duh. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what you're so worried about," he said.

"Not a genius but a telepath," said Daisy.

"Well I promise I did not read your mind although I guess technically I do read your mind just sort of by looking at your facial expression."

"Umm...well I'll have you know that I can do that too," said Daisy.

"Well I don’t doubt that," replied Harry with a smile,” I know for a fact that you can read me like a book when you want."

"Hmm...well you’re not wrong," said Daisy," like right now I can say that you are..."

"Okay enough postponing the problem with this talk of reading each other's expressions. Back onto what’s bothering you. Our parents," said Harry," I think that's what we're both worried about right now."

Daisy's smile vanished instantly and her face fell as the thoughts she'd been having earlier returned to plague her.

"Like I said, they'll be fine Daisy. Sure the aliens will be suspicious for some time but when they realize that there is no way for them to link the escape to our parents they will be forced to let them go. I don't think the aliens will sink low enough to actually go with anything harsher than that or else everyone will be rebelling against them citing unfair punishment and the last thing the aliens want is for everyone to be actively against them. At least from what I’ve seen of their history here."

"If only they knew what was going on right under their noses at the moment," added Daisy, a small smile returning to her face," do you really think that the aliens will want to do things that way?"

"Definitely, if the history that we learnt is anything to go by, they did not get Earth to surrender by just brashly attacking. They are planners and they will not just go around executing people simply out of anger until their problem has been solved."

"Well I hope you're right...not that I'm going to stop worrying about it until the day that we get to come back," said Daisy.

"Well that's true. But then that's probably going to be nothing compared to how they will feel once we are not at home. Maybe them being assigned some new work would be good in that sense because it'll give them something to worry about besides the fact that we're all gone."

"Now that is an angle that even I didn't fully consider. Of course all the parents, especially your parents Harry are going to be hit the hardest by us not being here."

"Well if the look on mom's face as she announced our names wasn't clear about that I don't know what is."

"Oh yeah she did look like she was trying very hard not to show any emotions on the stage but it was slipping through," said Daisy," and who can blame her when both her kids are going to be leaving."

"Exactly," agreed Harry.

"Maybe we should pay attention to what's happening on stage now," suggested Daisy.

"Right. We have to listen to that too."

"Yup. We're the ones that are going to have to actually execute those strategies."

Daisy turned back towards the stage.

"So the ladders can be built out of those. That's definitely a good idea. We're going to go with that then," Mrs. Kane was saying.

"Thank you. We'll think of exactly how best to acquire it and finalize as soon as possible."

"Did we...?" began Harry, turning.

"...just miss the entire plan for getting information from the cameras?" finished Daisy. Oh dear. Aria is never going to let this one go is she?

"The answer to that question would be yes," came Aria's voice as predicted.

"Of course...just spaced out a bit you know. I'm sure it could happen to just about anyone," said Harry, smiling weakly at Aria while Daisy nodded vigorously.

"Hmm...staring at someone else and discussing in whispers probably would be more of a reason," said Aria," wouldn't it?"

"We were not..." began Daisy.

"Did I say that you did that?" asked Aria," I just said that talking like that would make you much less likely to pay attention."

"Whatever," said Harry, waving his arms around," now tell us the plan."

"Later," she said, smiling," or else we will all miss the next plan. I'll tell you on the way back."

"Fine," said Daisy quickly. Please forget about us talking. She then quickly tapped Harry with her foot before he could open his mouth to argue.

He turned towards her, frowning and she subtly nodded towards Aria. His mouth opened in a soundless "Ohh" and he turned quietly towards the stage.

"What...now arguments?" asked Aria.

"Shhh...stop talking and pay attention sis," said Harry, muscles clearly straining to maintain a straight face. Daisy laughed and turned towards the stage herself. Aria let out a snort.

“Alright, guys,” said Mrs. Kane, “looks like we have a final plan for our ladder situation. We’re going to need quite a bit of manpower to pull that one off. I’ll hold a separate meeting with the rest of the volunteers to try and do that. If we pull it off as planned everything should be perfect. Okay then, all we’ve got left is to figure out when you guys can get together and plan out a route. It all has to be scouted well in advance. You guys can do it by yourselves right?”

Alex interrupted them. “Would it not be better to have a professional in the field of navigating the more technical aspects with them. Now I am not doubting Kathryn or any of the others, I have seen their resourcefulness first hand in class but would someone more experienced not be a valuable asset for such a project?"

"Well Alex, I'll first say that you raise a very valid point. Definitely not something I would object if it wasn't for the circumstances. Now for better or for worse we all agreed that in the end having these five admittedly rather young teenagers having the weight of the world on their shoulders will be the most viable way to pull this off and as such they must be able to execute perfectly on that day. So them using their limited knowledge to figure it out would train them better in my opinion."

"And them mastering whatever techniques used by someone else in five days would also be very difficult and overall add a level of difficulty to this that we really don't need," added Kathryn.

"Thank you Kathryn," said Mrs. Kane," that is also a huge factor in how we want this to play out."

"I have to say I am not the happiest at that but I can't find a reason to disagree with that argument. No further objections," said Alex, sitting down.

"Thank you Alex. Is there anyone else that would like to bring up any other problem that they have with this course of action?" asked Mrs. Kane again. This time she was met with silence. “Okay then. I suppose we can all sit down and discuss this part, instead of you all being down there and the rest of us being up on stage. Yeah, this is starting to get awkward."

"That does seem like the most practical," said Harry.

"Of course," said Mrs. Kane, and made her way down to the chairs, Mr. Haber in two.

"Alice, what exactly are we going to tell them in planning," began the other lady, now standing right by their row of chairs.

"Just a couple of guidelines Evelyn," replied Mrs. Kane," grab a chair and let's sit down next to them. Jake, come on down." Jake went over to nudge Alex and both of them made their way to the kids where Evelyn and Mrs. Kane had already taken their seats.

Sidney finally huffed quietly to herself and put the book down. It was getting too hard to ignore the need for lunch at the moment. There was just no way she would be able to pull through if she didn't go ahead and find something to eat. Whether it was chips or if she risked braving the kitchen.

Maybe the others would be there. Surely Sefarina and Idris would appear. Sefarina was the kind of person who was much too responsible to miss a meal right. And she'd surely bring Idris along. She was hoping it would be only those two. The others on the ship. She shuddered quietly. She really wasn't sure if she could face too many of them at the right now. Urgh. She would have to do some sort of mental inventory now. Not for now. Problem for later Sidney. Problem for later Sidney.

She managed to get herself up, rubbing the cobwebs out of her eyes and doing just a couple of stretches. Her pillow nests were of course of the highest quality. Naturally it meant when she really got cocooned in there with the blanket to fill it all in and put finishing touches on everything she tended to enter this slightly sleep like state except it was not because she was still engrossed in the book. She let out a yawn, taking advantage of the ability to not have to cover it now that there was no one in the room with her. After making shapes with her body, she didn't think were possible, she set about putting her book away. A proper lunch would take some time. It would be best to clean up for now and remake the little nest if it was needed again later into the day. It probably would be. It'd barely been six or seven hours since the group left and they'd talked about mapping out the entirety of the huge landmass laid out before them. Well exploring at least.

That sounded like the kind of thing that would take more than six hours. More like six days. Okay maybe two to three days. She was pretty sure Gray had mostly packed for two or three days. Maybe. She remembered the meeting fairly well but it was just a little bit marred by the whole incident that had taken place with Darvi. She really needed to look into that more once Darvi finally came back. Maybe even come up with a cool gameplan and things to do for Darvi along with Sefarina. She was sure Sefarina would love to do that.

Plots and plans already cooking up Sidney put the book and finished up with tidying all of her pillows. Before she could think twice about it and get ambitious she quickly ran out and dumped the pillows right back to Darvi's room. She had no idea if they were in the same spots that she'd stolen them from, but she was pretty sure after three days Darvi would probably not remember.

Giggling to herself, she did one final check of her room, before locking it all up behind her and then trotting off to the kitchen. It was time to brave the dangers of lunch.

    Years ago...

Rune was only six. He didn't feel it-- didn't want to feel it, but he did. He always heard the arguing, always wondered what it was about, but he could never understand. It just sounded like loud-mouth blabbers and drunken midnight thoughts. But one night, when it happened, he felt it. And... he understood it.

Glyph was gone. It was only him in his bedroom, reading books about the lore of the ships-- listening to the pitter patter of the rain outside his window. It all started when he heard a plate break downstairs in the kitchen, and a loud gasp from his mother that seemed to shake the whole house.

His father was screaming now. It made Rune cringe, so he flipped the blanket over his head and held his hands over his ears. Though, that didn't help. He felt as if he was stuck in a replicative cycle-- fine china breaking, his father yelling, and his mother gasping.

He decided to do something about it when he heard his mother sob.

Rune grabbed his pocketknife that he'd stolen from their neighbor and snuck down the stairs, one foot after another. Oh, how he wished Glyph was here. Glyph never let this happen-- which was most likely the main reason why his father started all of this in the first place. He'd never stepped in, but today was the day. He was tired of it.

Time slowed as his father made eye contact with him at the bottom of the stairs. His eyes didn't falter, he held his gaze and stared at his father's face with malicious intent. A steady tear ran down Rune's cheek. He was going to do it.

His mother, who was sprawled out on the floor with spare pieces of plate in her hand met his father's gaze. When her eyes laid on the knife, her face paled.

"Rune, put the knife down," she gasped through her tears.

His father didn't move an inch, "Boy, but the weapon down. You don't even know how to use that thing."

Rune didn't respond. He was full of anger, full of guilt, full of pure rage. He gripped the knife harder and turned to face his father.

His mother reached for him in desperation, "Rune, it's okay! Look at me! It's okay!"

Rune shook his head. A small choke emerged from his throat, along with a little hiccup. His little body was shaking, and his eyes were as read as lava.

"Step back, boy!" His father yelled, "Or..."

"Or what?" Rune tilted his head. He couldn't help but allow a small smile to creep along his face, "Or what?"

    His father didn't respond.

His mother scrambled to her feet, "Now, Rune... It's okay. I'm fine. It was just a little disagreement is all--"

"Is that what it was?" Rune's eyes snapped to her, "A little disagreement?"

His mother's face turned into a terrified expression. She gulped, "Put the knife down. We can talk about this."

    "No."

"You heard your mother," his father didn't take his eyes off Rune, but reached for an open bottle of alcohol on the counter that seemed to be about 90% empty. He took a big gulp and made an obnoxious 'ahh' sound at the end. Rune gripped the knife even harder. He could feel his nails pierce the skin of his palm.

His father made a quick movement and grabbed Rune by the arm, pulling him towards him and snatching the knife. Rune fought, but the blade ended up slicing him across the face, causing a dark crimson drip of blood to pour from his cheek.

His eyes widened. His mouth dropped. This was the end.

But in fact, it was only the beginning.

As much as exploring a creepy death-trap island appealed to Will, he had repairs to do. Serafina's trick of parting the storm had been pretty epic, from what he'd seen and heard from Darvi, but it had left a scorch mark on the steering wheel. Besides that, the ship was rattling off a list of things for Will to do.

So, there's the barnacles, as usual. Pesky things. If I were a constellation, I'd smite all barnacles in the world. Why were they even created? They don't serve any purpose at all. Tsk.

"I think the point about barnacles has been thoroughly covered," Will said dryly. He finished wiping away the soot from the wheel. Thankfully, it still seemed to be operational, and the cosmetic fix he'd had to do was minor. "What else?"

Fine, fine. There are also some scratch marks on my sides and on the crow's nest, and... Oh! The rudder is bent!

"You couldn't think to mention that earlier? Your vanity, dear ship, is just the slightest bit concerning."

Hey. Oh, also fix the lifeboat's cover when you can, hmm? It got ripped a little when the stowaway was discovered. The ship creaked, and Will imagined it sounded a bit patronizing.

"I'll have you know that 'mechanic' doesn't actually mean 'servant of the ship,' thank you very much." Will grumbled under his breath, but he headed towards the rudder. That seemed to be the most pressing issue.

He'd likely have to dive underwater for this one. Will made a quick stop to get a diving suit and tank as well as his tools, then tethered himself to the railing and jumped off the ship.

The water was cold but clear. The engines churned out bubbles. Will scattered a few bubbles as he swam towards the rudder, which was indeed tilted slightly to the right. Bracing himself against the material of the ship, he got to work.

Meanwhile, the ship continued to chatter. Thanks, bro! Have no idea how that happened. While you're there, could you get the barnacles too? Pretty please?

Will rolled his eyes, but got out a scraping tool once he finished with the rudder. He started scraping. The barnacles fell off, bit by bit.

Ahhh, that hits the spot! You're catching up to Idris. Well, not really. Just by a few points. If you do this regularly, maybe you'll catch up faster.

Will didn't think he was particularly motivated by the thought of rising in the ship's rankings, but he kept scraping. Maybe now the ship would stop bugging him about barnacles every two seconds.

Finally, Will swam back to the surface and climbed back onto the ship. He'd used up nearly the full tank of air, but at least the ship's hull was cleaner, right? The ship hummed contentedly in his mind.

He was honestly exhausted, but he still had a few tasks left. Namely, the scratches and the lifeboat cover.

Will. Hey, Will. Do you want to hear a story?

Will paused in the middle of putting the diving suit away. He hadn't expected that, but his curiousity was piqued. "Sure."

Okay, okay. I'm going to tell the story of a ship. It's a play on words. Like, both a boat and a relationship. Get it?

"Yeah." So far, this wasn't doing much to raise Will's expectations of the story, but it was distracting him from his tiredness. He walked towards the lifeboat the stowaway had been found in.

So, this ship was an old, beaten-down ship. Lots of barnacles, very crusty, the works. Naturally, the ship was a grump and not nearly as fabulous as I am. The ship sailed the seas each day, helping fishermen earn their keep.

Will pulled out a needle and thread and started mending the tarp.

The ship had loved and lost before, and now they were content to just fish in the day, grumble at night, and exist until they eventually were destined for the scrapyards. They thought they had a monotonous life, but far better to be alive and bored than living a dangerous life of adventure as a pirate ship in the high seas, right?

"Right." Will finished mending the tarp and replaced it over the lifeboat. He scaled the rigging and headed up towards the crow's nest.

Then... Somehow, the ship managed to modulate their voice to sound dramatic. One day, the ship saw the love of their life! It was another ship, oh so glorious in the rays of the sun that bounced off their polished wood and white sails! Love at first light!

"I'm sorry to say this, but that is very cheesy." Will stopped right below the crow's nest and waved to Naim. Naim blinked back at him silently. Always silent, that one.

Shhhhh. I wasn't done. Anyways, this new ship was actually a pirate ship! They were wearing white sails as a disguise. And whoosh! The new ship fired on the main character ship! Bang! Cannonballs! the ship crowed.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but would you consider giving the ships names so I can distinguish them more easily?" Will painted over a few scratches, shifting his position as he did so.

If you insist. Erm. Shippy and Shwoopy. Shwoopy is the pirate.

"I regret asking."

Well, I don't regret telling! Now, back to where I was before a certain someone interrupted me. Shwoopy attacked Shippy! The fishermen were in chaos! Shippy listed towards starboard! Oh my stars, what'll happen next?

"Lemme guess. Enemies to lovers trope?" Will finished with the crow's nest, nodded to Naim again, then descended the rigging.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Well, not exactly. For dear old Shippy, it was love at first fight. Shwoopy saw Shippy only as their latest target. It was meh at first sight. The fishermen were in chaos, the pirates started boarding, and Shippy nearly fainted to see Shwoopy draw so close. They thought Shwoopy was like an angel from the depths, brilliant in their firepower and sleek curves and shiny figurehead.

"Wow." Will started patching up scratches on the ship's deck and sides.

The reason the pirates targeted this ship was that they'd lately found a rare species of fish. This fish had silver scales and was said to heal all illnesses! It was a wonderfish! Right now, the fishermen had bushels of these wonderfish on board Shippy. The fishermen, though stout of heart, were no match for the pirates. Soon, the pirates had taken all the cargo and were leaving Shippy. Shwoopy started to sail away.

"Oh no," Will deadpanned. "What will Shippy do next?"

Shippy was not about to give up this time. They'd been too hesitant other times, and that had gotten them nothing but barnacles. Forgotten were thoughts of a boring life. Now, Shippy went on a high-speed chase.

"How inspiring."

Shippy pursued Shwoopy across the sea, the fishermen hanging on for dear life. The pirates worried. Had there been a law enforcement force aboard Shippy? That would be the only explanation for the ship now chasing them... although if that was the case, why hadn't they stopped the pirates from taking the fish? The pirates urged Shwoopy to go faster.

Will listened as he finished covering up the scratches. He'd checked up on the engines earlier, so he was nearly done with his tasks for today.

As Shippy drew nearer, they confessed their interest! Not love, actually. I misspoke. It was more like a crush, cuz that's more realistic. Shippy composed a poem for Shwoopy on the spot. "Oh ship I see in front of me! Thou art the beauty of the sea! Majestic and capable and even better than tea!"

Will did a final round of inspection by walking around the entire ship.

Shwoopy's heart was touched by these words, and they slowed down. Unfortunately, the pirates manned the cannons again! Shippy's life was hanging on by a thread! The fishermen ducked for cover. A cannonball tore through Shippy's hull, but Shippy was not going to back down.

Despite himself, Will found himself becoming absorbed by the story.

Shwoopy would not back down either. They were intrigued by Shippy and wanted to give the relationship a chance. And they saw only one choice to get the people on the ships to stop fighting.

Shwoopy rammed into Shippy!

Some pirates and fishermen were thrown overboard. Water rushed in through holes in both ships. Soon enough, they were both sinking into the depths.

The people floundered and, in a few hours, drowned. Finally, some peace and quiet. Shwoopy held on to Shippy as they continued downwards together.

The water enveloped them in a soft blue. Fish swirled around their masts and strands of kelp invited them to stay there forever.

Shippy, then Shwoopy, came to rest on the seabed. Deep sea creatures began to explore their interiors. Shippy, though missing chunks of their hull, was still alive-- and the happiest they'd been in a long, long time. Shwoopy settled down next to Shippy.

"So, my dear poet. How shall we start the rest of our lives?"

The ship creaked proudly. Not bad, huh?

Will nodded. "You'll become a storyteller yet."

Why thank you. No other matters need your attention today, by the way.

That got a real whoop out of Will. "Thanks, mint century potato swordspear!"

You're welcome, not-my-servant.

Warning: Violence

Idris walked out of the meeting with Libra feeling a strange flutter in her stomach. Free. She would go outside again. She would see other people again. Soon. So soon. The world opened up to her again.

As she turned the corner, a man came out from one of the rooms. it was Libra's assistant. Or, ex-assistant? She wasn't quite sure what just happened.

"Ah, Peaks. Why don't you come in here?" He opened the door for her and smiled. It was how Papa smiled when he got drunk and Idris stepped on the wrong floorboard.

She backed away, shaking her head.

The man raised his eyebrow. "Oh? Let me rephrase. Get in the room."

Idris went back to the room Libra was in and almost knocked on the door. Before she could, the man grabbed her by the back of her shirt. She gasped as she was dragged to the room.

The door locked shut behind her. "You see, Peaks, I know all about what happened with the old Libra. Quite frankly, scum like you deserves it. But the current Libra is too soft to know that. So I'll be taking things into my own hands."

There was a fireplace on the back wall and a chair in front of it. There was a basket of what looked like fire pokers.

"I figured that you hadn't properly been burned. So now you can actually get what you deserve." The man pushed her towards the fireplace. "You know what to do."

She could barely walk to the fireplace, kneeling in front of it. She couldn't breathe.

"Do it, Peaks. You deserve it. Criminals like you don't deserve second chances. You only deserve to be punished and locked up in jail."

Idris nodded. She did. She did deserve it. What was wrong with Libra?

The man took a fire poker and put it underneath the coals in the fireplace, then took it out and started pressing it against Idris' skin. "See, not that hard. And it looks like you know that old Libra was right. You deserve to die. If you were really sorry. For both your parents and for Ivory. I heard about your little friend."

Idris screamed as her skin blistered. All she could see was white-hot agony.

Darvi doubled check that all of her knives were in her bag, sighing. It would be good to go with Rune. Explore the island to check for threats. With Belinda? Maybe she'd be distracted by all of the new sights to say anything.

Sidney walked up to them."Darvi? Hello?"

"What’s up?" Darvi eyed one of their daggers. It was a trustworthy weapon. Perfect for unknown territory.

"You're leaving."

"I am." Why was Sidney so surprised? She should've known she was leading the expedition. "Not for long."

"Am I still not allowed near you?" Sidney pouted.

“You’re near me right now.” Darvi looked over. Why was she being so weird? They weren't going to completely disappear for three months. Unless they died. That was always a possibilty.

Sidney huffed. "Are you. Are you okay?"

“Yeah, of course. Why wouldn’t I be?” Darvi decided to sit down in the desk chair. Sidney seemed like she'd be going on for a while now.

"The incident?" Sidney shuddered as she spoke.

“Are you and Sefarina still mad about that?” Darvi crossed their arms. Of course it was that. He should've guessed.

"We're not mad about you Darvi or at you. We're worried for you." Sidney crossed her arms right back.

“What are you worried about?”

"You?" Sidney frowned.

“What about me…?” Darvi gestured for her to elaborate. She thought she made it perfectly clear to Sidney and Sefarina not to wory.

"You seemed deeply hurt." Sidney was back to pouting.

Darvi sighed. “I’m fine. I was fine.”

"So you say. Aboslutely nothing has gone wrong. You only left because you were done."

“Exactly!” Darvi put on a big grin. Maybe it was a littler forced but Sidney was being a little too Sidney right now.

Sidney nodded. "So I should act like absolutely nothing is wrong and everything is fine?"

“Is it acting if it’s true?” Darvi rubbed their temples. Sidney and Sefarina would not drop it. “Why are so obsessed with what happened? “

"Sorry. I guess we just like... I don't know. Care about your wellbeing. Are a little concerned you did something a bit unlike your normal routine. Are worried that you were hurt. But then all of those concerns are wrong right?"

Darvi’s face heated up. “You don’t have to sound so sarcastic…”

Sidney flushed. "Sorry. Sorry. Didn't mean to be mean." She patted Darvi's shoulder. "I just. I want you to smile. Like you do when Sefarina kisses you. Like all the time. Don't want see sad Darvi smile."

Darvi flushed harder. “I don’t smile any different for Sefarina. And you’re not mean. Just sound like you think I’m a liar.”

Sidney huffed. "Well you see I do think you're lying. Especially when you release a bald faced lie like how you don't smile different for Sefarina. I know that goofy wide eyed look very well."

“It’s bold face, Princess.” Darvi drummed their fingers on the table. Maybe that would get Sidney off her ankles.

"Bold face?"

“Yes. It’s a bold face lie. Not ‘bald face.’”

"I'm lying you're saying?" SIdney questioned.

Stars, every conversation was a minefield with this girl. “I’m saying you’re wrong. You are mistaken.”

"OKayy thank youuu." Sidney grinned.

“Okay…” Darvi turned back to their bag. They had to finish this.

"So I'm making bad assumptions?"

What a naive thought. She turned back. “What? You got the saying wrong. That’s all I’m saying.”

"Ohhh grammar. Sorryyy. I didn't realizee thattt. Thank you for helping me outt." Sidney genuinely smiled at that.

“You’re very welcome.” Darvi turned back to their task for the final time.

"Can I hug you Darvi?" Sidney for once actually asked.

Darvi blinked. “Hug me?”

Sidney nodded. "Yeah. Hug. Hold you. Cradle you to my bosom. I don't know how else to say it."

Darvi rubbed their temples. There was two ways of escaping this. Let Sidney hug her or start an eight hour debate. “Sure, Princess.” At least a hug was shorter.

"I cannnn? Reallyyy?" Sidney jumped up and down in excitement. Oh planets and moons this was a mistake.

“Don’t strangle me please." Darvi scooted the chair back.

"I won't strangle youuu. Only huggg."

“I’ll trust you.” No he wouldn't but it was too late.

"Thank youuu." Sidney beamed.

“So when are you going to come and do it…?”

SIdney gently wrapped around Darvi.

Darvi stiffened for a moment, but gripped the table to stay calm. No freaking out this time.

Sidney stroked Darvi's back gently. Unnecessary, but whatever it took. "I'll miss you."

Darvi didn’t quite know what to do with herself. It was a lot of touch. And why would Sidney miss them? “I’ll be fine.”

She pulled away after a bit more. "I like you."

Darvi blinked. “Huh?” What? Who? Why?

"What?" Sidney pouted.

“You like me?” Darvi raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah?" Sidney looked mildly confused now.

“That sounds extreme.”

"Huh?" Sidney looked even more confused.

“I would guess you tolerate me at best.” Darvi frowned. Sidney literally complained about everything he did for the first few days of knowing them.

"Turns out I like you actually." Sidney made it sound like an obvious fact.

“Well, I’m glad we’re chums then.” Darvi awkwardly patted her hand.

Sidney beamed brighter than they'd ever see her smile.

Darvi nodded. “Anything else?”

"Umm...that was a sudden revelation actually."

“What was?” Darvi frowned.

“I mean. Wouldn’t you know if you wanted to be a friend pretty early on?”

"I meann it was a rocky start okayy. Its still a little weird." SIdney pouted.

“Okay. Sorry.” Darvi patted her wrists again.

"Wait why are you sorryy?" Sidney pouted again.

“That it’s weird.” That was an obvious connection.

Sidney pouted. "It allowed to be weirdd."

“Okay. Sure.” Why Sidney would complain about it then makes no sense.

Sidney sighed softly, slumping into herself. "Sorry."

“Don’t be sorry. If you’re okay with it, good for you.”

She slid right onto the floor, sitting down, her voice very quiet. "Okay Darvi."

Oh not again. “What’s wrong now? What did I do?”

"Nothing."

“You sound like I just punched your dog.”

"I don't own a dog though?"

Darvi would not snap at the princess. Darvi would not snap at the princess. Darvi would not- “I stole your favorite dollar bill! I don’t know!”

"You could neverrr"

“Let’s say theoretically I did." Darvi tapped the side of her hand on the table. "That’s how you would look.”

"Really? I look that bad?"

“I mean not ugly! Just upset.” Darvi groaned.

"Ohh. Yeahh. I'm pretty upset. Maybe a lot upset." Sidney nodded slowly.

“Why are you upset? What did I do?” Darvi frowned. There it was. Why was it like pulling teeth?

"Huh? Why would it be you who made me upset?" Sidney just looked confused now.

“Because I said something and then you got upset.”

"That's a fair point. I can see why you would think that."

“So do you want to correct me?” Darvi nudged her leg with his foot.

Sidney nodded. "It's not youu. Well not reallyy."

“That’s not reassuring.”

"Sorry. I can explainnn. Just feeling a bit confused and weird right now." Sidney pouted some more.

“Confused and weird about what?”

"Just myself. Life. You know the stuff." Sidney shrugged.

“I can… talk to you… about it.” Darvi winced. They were probably the worst person to ever interact with on this sort of thing.

"Are you sure?" Sidney looked a little surprised.

Darvi nodded. “If you want.”

*Do you want to?"

“I would like to if you want to.”

"I want tooo." Sidney beamed.

“Well, it is your chance to speak.” Darvi turned the chair to face floor-sitter Sidney.

"I.. I feel like I'm very bad at comforting you." Sidney pouted.

Darvi blinked. “That’s why you’re upset?”

"Yeah." Sidney pouted and looked down.

“I don’t mean to like… belittle your feelings. But… why?”

"I just. I keep misinterpreting your moods." Sidney shrugged.

“Okay, but why do you care is more what I’m getting at.” Darvi frowned. “Like why does that upset you?””

"Cause I care if you're happy or not?" Sidney sounded like that should be obvious.

“Okay but like, that’s not your responsibility.”

"Yeah but I can still care?"

“I mean, yeah.” Darvi shrugged. “But in a, ‘Oh you’re happy, that’s cool? Oh you’re sad, that sucks, can you get over it?’ way.”

"You just described a person who doesn't care." Sidney huffed

“Huh? What?” Darvi crossed their arms. “I think that’s… perfectly reasonable to think.”

"No its not." Sidney pouted. "That's rudee."

“Oh. Sorry then.” Darvi was starting to regret offering to listen.

"Why are you sorry?"

“For frustrating you so much when you cared.”

"What did you mean you frustrated me?" SIdney looked confused again.

“I don’t know, okay? I’m just…” Darvi groaned and covered their face. “I’m just saying words because I don’t know what you want from me. That’s how Belinda is. And yeah, it sucks sometimes. Sometimes it really sucks, but I can’t do anything about it.”

"That's what I want to know. If it sucks for you. Becaue you looked like it was starting to really, really suck for you." Sidney scooted closer

“It’s how it’s always been. Belinda’s… a flower. A beautiful rose. The finest rose.” Darvi cupped her hands. “And I’m a weed.”

"I refuse to believe that." Sidney looked serious again. This was new.

Darvi blinked. “What? Weren’t you so happy to call me Poopy Head three days ago?"

Sidney shrugged. "It was funnyy."

"Right. But that isn't exactly a nickname for someone you admire." Darvi narrowed her eyes.

"I mean yeah. It wasn't going to be your nickame though. I just thought it was funny to tease you in the moment. I mean you were being a bit strict there. I know you were just doing your job, but that was one moment where maybe you went a bit far. I mean. Not that I know how to tell you to do your job. ANd I really appreciate what you do for me. But I think some people want you to take it a little easier sometimes. For your sake really. Not even theirs."

Darvi felt their heart sink. "Okay. I understand. I'm too rough and strict. Okay. No one likes me like this." They looked around. "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you so much."

The only thing they could think of was Belinda.

Belinda sat on the couch, kicking her feet in the air. She was reading some ficition book. One that she was not supposed to be reading.

Darvi was staring at her over her essay, glaring. "Belinda. Hey, Belinda!"

Belinda squeaked and dropped the book on her face. She groaned and picked it up again. "Aries' wool, Darvi. Where's the fire?"

Darvi huffed. "We need to work on our essays. They're due in a week!"

"You... actually work on them ahead of time?" Belinda snorted. "Don't make me laugh."

"Mrs. Smith said that procrastinating makes bad essays."

Belinda let out a full laugh. "Darvi! Don't tell me you actually care about that. Mrs. Smith is so easily impressed. She'll give you full points for an essay you wrote in a half hour."

Darvi flinched. "She gave me a B on my last one. It took weeks."

Belinda stared at her before she cackled, kicking her feet in pure amusement. "Teacher's pet! With bad grades! Please, Darvi!" She took a few deep breaths to calm down. "You need to stop caring so much about all of the little rules. They're not going to help you. You're sooo uptight. It has to be exhausting." She giggled. "Maybe that's why your crush didn't invite you to her birthday. She could smell your stress a mile away."

It never when away. It never changed. Darvi always pushed everyone away because they couldn't change. They followed the rules because that was the only thing keeping them afloat and everyone else pointed and laughed because rules were never followed.

"Huh? Did I accidentally not say what I meant to? I quite literally said everyone cares about you, and are worried for you and your interpreation is that no one likes you?"

Darvi frowned. "I just... everyone keeps telling me that. And it never happens."

"What do you mean? What does everyone keep telling you that never happens?" Sidney actually got up this time.

"I never get better. I never calm down enough for people to stop asking."

"Stop asking what exactly?"

"For me to calm down!" Darvi groaned. "To stop caring about the rules, to relax, to give up everything that got me to where I am in life! The only thing that kept me from becoming nothing!"

"I'm not sure I'm following. Putting yourself through hell and back and forcing yourself to become that paranoid is the only thing keeping you going? I mean I understand following the rules and enforcing them. You're a guard. Its your thing. People are just saying you can do that and still like. Treat yourself as a person. You're not a program forced to obey all the rules."

"I barely scrape by following the rules, what happens when I stop? What happens when I have nothing keeping me useful?"

"How are you not useful? Sefarina adores you. You do so much. I adore you. You help me so much. Taking care of yourself once in a blue moon isn't going to change that."

Darvi's brain fritzed. "You... adore me?"

"Duh?" Sidney shrugged like this was perfectly common information.

Darvi blinked. "I... I should..."

"What?" Sidney huffed.

"I need to go." Darvi stood up. "I... I need to go."

"Why are you running away this time?" Sidney pouted.

"I... I just..."

SIdney get closer to Darvi. "I am trying to say I care about you genius. And I like youu. And I'm just trying to get you to understand a lot of people like you. How do I convince you? Do I have to..." Sidney leaned in and kissed Darvi's cheek agian. "Do that again. That seems to work when Sefarina does it."

Darvi burst into tears, sinking to his knees as he was completely overwhelmed. It felt like a volcano exploding with every chunk of hurt and loneliness and jealousy. They buzzed and burned and shook and they just sat there and had to let it roll over them like a tidal wave.

Sidney just stood there for a moment, not really moving or reacting to it, like she really didn't know what to make of that reaction or where to go next. Darvi scrambled back until he hit a wall. This wasn't supposed to be happening. This was wrong. This was bad. This was why she needed to leave.

"What's going on Darvi?"

Darvi shook her head.

SIdney knelt in front of Darvi, trying to get in closer, probably trying to understand what was going on at the moment. Darvi let out a wail. Why was she like this? This was time to run.

"Darvi? Can you speak to me? What's happening? I'm getting a little scared."

Darvi shook their head again. They couldn't breathe.

"You can't speak right now?"

She nodded.

Sidney knelt down carefully in front of Darvi. It didn't look like she had the faintest clue what exactly she needed to be doing in this moment but she seemed commited to not running away. She wasn't even glancing behind her, just focused fully on Darvi and the predicament that she was in. Darvi covered his face. This was just embarrasing.

Sidney scooted beside Darvi. She awkwardly placed a hand on their shoulder, starting to gently make a soothing pattern on it. She was hardly touching Darvi, her fingers featherlight on Darvi's clothes, barely enough force to be felt through the tough fabric that Darvi had chosen to be going out to this dangerous looking island. Darvi felt herself slump on her shoulder. She had no idea why. She couldn't stop it.

Sidney seemed to flinch for just a moment, like she hadn't been expecting it but then she settled into it almost immediately. She pulled Darvi a little closer in fact, now daring to put her entire other arm around Darvi from the book.

"There there Darvi. I'm there for you." She groaned out loud. "Urgh I sound like the worst character in a book about teens right about now. You can do better SIdney. You can be comforting. You can help Darvi. You've got this."

She pulled Darvi just a little bit closer. "I'm here for you Darvi. I, Sidney Picklock hereby pledge to stay here..."

Sidney groaned louder. "I suck at this. Darvi is doomed."

She groaned again and tried one more time. "I like you Darvi. Yes. That is true. Its not going to change now. Not because of this or not because of anything you can say because I've seen you Darvi and I like who that is. A lot. Like a lot a lot."

"A lot...?" Darvi hated how pathetic she sounded.

"Yes Darvi. I a lot. I don't even know how to tell you this. Maybe this is a good time to tell you actually. You can't chase me away with a big sword or shoot me in the face with Nicky's guns. Or throw me overboard. Or do something worse. Like tell Sidney I actually hate you get away from me. We'll figure it out." She groaned again like she was completely rethinking her entire life somehow but at the same time getting a weirdly goofy grin on her face. It reminded Darvi of the smile Darvi had whenever Darvi thought of Sefarina.

"W-what...?" She gasped. "Are you saying..?"

Sidney took a deep breath and leaned into Darvi. Her voice dropped to a whisper as she got in just a little closer for good measure, practically touching Darvi's ear with her lips.

"I umm. I like you. Look. You help me. You taught me how to fold my bedsheet and put it in the closet. You told me how to properly throw away trash."

Darvi nodded.

"You just. You don't judge. I mean maybe you do quietly. But you haven't judged me openly. So many people pointing at me and telling me all kinds of things but you don't. I mean you do, but that's only when I'm too stubborn to listen and when I'm just going off about something and you just badly need me to listen to you, which I get that. I am a little hard to be around sometimes so that's fine. You help me when it counts and you're willing to help teach the things other people consider too dumb to teach because you understand that I just genuinely never had anyone teach those things to me. Those were not required skills where I grew up. It was just how things were."

Darvi nodded again. "I-I know..."

"So...I guess what I'm trying to say is. You're the first person who i feels like really cares about me. Me me. You know. I've had a lot of maids. Believe me. They end up changing kind of often sometimes, but the majority of them just do their best to please me. I mean my mother's nice to me. I think she cares for me but that's my mother. Like she doesn't technically count. I mean I could ask her how to throw away trash but she'd probably give me a lecture about the concept of trash rather than actually helping me. If you get what I mean?"

Darvi nodded again.

"So umm. Yeah. So I guess you're special to me. Like really special. I don't even know how to mention it. Like I feel these feelings like I really need you around nowadays. You know when I said I would miss you I really meant it. Being away from you for too too long is getting a little. Hard right now? I don't even know how to properly put that into words to be perfectly honest with you. Its such a weird thing to think. Not being able to be away from a person right? But that's how I feel. I feel like I just need to always be close to you and if I'm not. I don't know. I feel this itch. No wait. That's just gross. Urgh how does one go about making profound statements about one's feeling? That was one lesson those tutors were really bad at teaching. Always hide your emotions my ass. Umm sorrry got distracted. But what I mean is that. It feels like umm. Oh yeah. Not having you with me is like not having my favorite hairbrush. Will I die if you weren't there? I mean logically not. But my brain. My brain cannot compute that logic. It thinks that I am in fact going to die. I will perish if I don't get my perfectly combed hair. I will perish if I don't get my time with Darvi. Like that's the vibe you see?"

Darvi nodded, eyes wide. "O-Okay. Um... I'm your favorite hairbrush?"

"No genius. I umm. I like you a lot. I need you around. I want you. Oh god. I think I like like like you. You know like how you do with Sefarina. Like I want to kiss you kind of like you."

Aquarius hummed quietly to herself as she settled in for the afternoon. Lunch had been a pretty good time and Aquarius had managed to have maybe a tiny bit more than she ought to have because Gray was not present to make sure Aquarius stopped at a reasonable time. It would probably be finee. Gray had separated the food out by meal and not by person and Aquarius had only dug into some of the leftovers once everyone still on the ship had eaten so it wasn't like it was going to cause a food shortage for Aquarius in the future. Or for anyone else on the ship for that matter.

This was quite naturally a success story. One that Aquarius was pretty grateful for in fact. It was going to really help when it came to focusing up on everything and getting things done this afternoon. The first island. The first island. They'd actually ended up reaching it. It was finally time for Aquarius to make some space for that particular bit of writing. Well Aquarius wasn't going to be on the initial bit of exploration. That is why he was stuck on an anchored ship after all. That wasn't a big deal though.

Truth be told, Aquarius was honestly fairly happy about the fact that he'd get to stay back on the ship and be on land for the moment. Aqua really hadn't liked the look of the storms around them. Sure Sefarina had dispelled some of them. Enough of them to get all the way into the island in fact. That was still not a lot though. As soon as the ship was safely through. Those storms were beginning to slowly come back. That was on top of the rest of that perimeter, at least as far as was visible to Aqua's eyes were still fully filled with storms. It was unnatural.

Aqua wasn't exactly an expert on weather or nature in general for that matter. Aqua was however possessing of this little thing that was called common sense. Common sense suggested that storm fronts didn't just form in a random perfect circle. Even if it wasn't something completely created by the inhabitants of or some sort of attacking for on this island it was taking natural storms and funneling them in some way to form this straight line. It had to be. Unless Aqua really knew that little about storms. Surely it wasn't a case of that. There was no way this was natural. Because if that was Aqua needed to seriously reevaluate her opinion on nature.

Aqua sighed and shook her head again. Even beyond the storms the island just didn't look... welcoming. It was hostile somehow. Aqua couldn't see too much of it even from the front deck, but it looked for lack of a better word...dead. Maybe it was the various shipwrecks. Maybe it was the fact that there appeared to be something just generally blackened and off in the distance. Either way it was enough to make Aqua prefer staying back. Someone else could do the initial exploring. Then perhaps later Aqua could go, when they'd identified all the dangers or lack thereof. Aqua really hoped it would be lack thereof but it was hard to say. This island didn't feel like it would be a surprise wholesome one.

Aqua shrugged and let out another sigh. There was probably no point to worrying too, too much about that. It wasn't like there was a tremendous amount to be done about it. Not until everyone came back. Hopefully they would all be safe. That was the main thing that Aqua actually could do right now. Hope for the people out there that they'd be safe and come back safe. They were probably having their lunch now, having been adventuring for quite some hours. Aqua had no idea how expeditions like that worked, but given the amount of food they'd taken, this was barely a quarter of the time they'd have to spend out there. It was going to be a long wait.

Aqua groaned softly again. Waiting was the one thing Aquarius didn't like very much. It just had wayy too many uncertainties. And unlike the uncertainties one got with something like a surprise ice cream tasting, the unpleasant uncertainties that could emerge were just wayy too directed towards being bad and evil and the kind that tended to result in tears. It was very rare ice cream would result in tears. Unless the ice cream was just that good, or just a bit too cold although that second option was pretty rare with how well Aquarius could take the colder parts of ice cream.

Aquarius wasn't immune to it of course. No one was. Well unless your constellation gift was somehow inexplicably being immune to the effects of cold temperature. Aquarius had just gotten rather numb to the more well numbing feelings of ice cream and its ability to induce those fancy headaches. Aquarius racked her brain trying to think of that. She'd definitely picked up that super random fact at one point in time. Yes. Sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia. Aqua was proud of that one. It was totally useless but confusing people into thinking Aqua was smart was a great perk.

She giggled to herself as she flipped open her journal. It would hopefully only be a day maybe two more before she could start adding more information to this based on the actual island and its quirks. Even if it ended up only being more second hand accounts from Darvi or Belinda. Aqua could of course try and write down the first impressions, but before she did that Aqua did have to consider whether to update her opinions on everyone or not.

It had been a couple of days since things had gone down in the previous one, but Aqua wasn't sure if she'd actually discovered too much more. Sure there'd been two meetings that introduced a couple of more interesting facts, but nothing ground breaking. The worst part was Aqua hadn't learnt too much more about the few people that she was really missing out on information about. That was the part where Aqua would really have liked to add more. Maybe she could make just a couple of notes on top of some of the earlier ones. She had left plenty of space for expansion even on the people she'd had the most to say.

Then Aqua glanced at the book she'd paused on for the past day, what with all the storms and meetings and then helping Gray pack up some of the ice cream for that expedition out. She would love to get a bit more reading done. The island thing would take over a day. The things she had to update were miniscule. She groaned. Difficult decisions like this one made her head hurt. She finally relented and put her journal away, grabbing the book. She'd earned a little break surely. Especially with all the ice cream related helping she'd done yesterday. She was going to pointedly ignore how she'd done almost nothing this morning. All things considered that was also definitely just another well deserved break.

Flipping open the book to where she'd left it, she began to read again:

Safi very nearly screamed and whooped in glee as they were escorted into the armory. She decided against it at the very last moment, given that she was almost definitely not meant to be acting like a five-year-old in a candy store in front of such dangerous weapons.

It didn’t stop her from internally celebrating though. This was an incredible moment to be allowed to set foot in here so, so early and even though she’d studied so much about the places this could be accessed from and the weapons here, it was absolutely nothing like stepping into the real thing, not to mention they might get a glimpse of the top-secret weapons they didn’t teach to trainees.

Safi risked a glance at Serafina and smiled. She was showing possibly the most emotions she had shown so far, well besides that moment when she’d gone and comforted her earlier. Safi absolutely definitely certainly would be touching that thought. Nope. Not at all. That little smile had not managed to make her feel like she was floating for some reason and her stomach was feeling funny just from her nerves. That thought was locked up forever never to be touched ever again and where was she… Right Serafina had a slight gleam in her eyes at the moment.

Safi swallowed heavily and looked the other way. Anna and Sally were a safer sight to look at and probably an important one too given how they were immediately heading over to a shelf like they knew what they wanted to be getting and given one of them was up for a promotion to team leader and the other one already was one, they definitely should know what they wanted.

“Safi, you’re allowed to run around and pick, you don’t have to stand there waiting for permission.” It was Anna, causing Safi to almost jump a foot in the air. She needed to stop getting lost in thoughts.

She managed a smile. “Sorry, sorry. I was just. I wasn’t sure. Its dangerous. And things. And blah.”

Sally chuckled. “Cut the poor girl some slack, Anna. She’s new, remember.”

“You know I can’t help myself.”

“That’s not an excuse you can just throw around like a shield.”

Safi tuned out their argument, turning almost fearfully to Serafina again. She didn’t need to hear those two flirts at the moment but going with Serafina to get something would also be just as much of a punishment. Wait no. Safi’s brain threw up another red alert. Why was that a punishment? Serafina was an old friend, an acquaintance really. She wasn’t half evil so. So, it should be a good thing to walk with her getting weapons. Serafina was good at picking out the best things too. She knew that much from experience.
Before Anna could call her out again, Safi jumped in the general direction Serafina was headed in, vowing to follow her without any mishaps, not that there was even the slightest chance of any sort of mishap. Why would there be a mishap?

“Planning on getting anything?” Serafina’s voice turned out to be the second thing that would shatter Safi out of her thoughts and this time she almost fell unconscious. Okay that was an exaggeration. Slightly.

“Mmm hmm ah hmm,” was Safi’s rather intelligent response if she did say so herself.

“Sorry I didn’t quite manage to catch that.”

Safi managed to clear her mind of the whirlpool of thoughts that were trying very hard to send her spinning out of control.

“I umm.. meant. Why. Why would I not get anything? You definitely need something on hand going into a potentially dangerous situation.”

Serafina smirked. “Oh, don’t play that card now. You hardly need a weapon for ranged attacking or mass destruction for that matter.”

Safi felt her face heat up, spluttering a little. “I.. I. I can hardly just rely on that.”

Serafina nodded. “That’s smart. That’s smart. You don’t want to put all your money on just the one ability. Honestly for such a small mission though, I doubt that’s going to matter. You could probably level that entire town.”

Safi really needed to get some sort of mask or some sort of cream that stopped blushes from being visible. Or was it really just that hot in here. That couldn’t be right. They kept this whole room at a carefully controlled temperature, one that was usually in the early twenties and therefore would not be hot enough to….

“Imagining how you’re going to level the town?” Serafina’s voice broke through Safi’s thoughts again.

Safi found herself somehow blushing harder. This was honestly just getting embarrassing. She was going to have to learn some sort of spell for this. Maybe two spells.

“Nope. Just. Thoughts be thoughting.”

Serafina managed the ghost of a smile and Safi suddenly felt ridiculously proud. She was definitely not poking the thoughts that popped up at that particular revelation. Nuh uh. Not this girl.

“Thoughts tend to do that. Wise words fairy lights.” Serafina winked and promptly walked off, leaving Safi to figure out how to breathe again. Since when did Serafina know that particular nickname? Safi’s instructor had promised not to spill that idea to a single soul.

Before Safi could completely combust from the possibility of other people knowing that nickname, she ran over to the first reasonable looking weapons she could find. She needed to gather her bearings and find something that looked pointy and scary.
She ended up wandering towards the archery section. As much as swords were lovely, getting up close and fighting really wasn’t her style. Not that you had much opportunity to get into long range sniper duels on missions like this, up close and personal was the name of the game, but every opportunity she got, she would much, much rather prefer to do it this way.

The selection, as she expected, was incredible. Even more incredible than what the books had described. That was to be expected. They never quite revealed all of their secrets.

The bows were all raid out neat little rows, mounted on racks with holders that seemed to have been designed specifically with each bow in mind. There had to be at the very least a hundred bows here maybe even more on just this one pale blue wall, but each seemed to be crafted with so much care. Safi was pretty sure she could make out an individually carved name on each piece.

The rows and rows of bows also swirled with the tiniest purple hint, giving each blue an eerie little glow. That was almost definitely the protection spells. The instructors had gone on about quite how secure these weapons were against outside tampering.
Once she managed to get over the shock of the whole thing, she let her eyes wander. Her eyes were immediately drawn to the very top row, the ones that didn’t get mentioned in lessons.

There were so many shapes and sizes to pick from, but there were two that caught her eye right away. Maybe it was because they were both pure white and practically glowing with their own light, giving the surprisingly bright lights in the armory a run for their money. Maybe it was because they were both also at the very center of the top row and almost looked like the most important pieces of the collection, but either way Safi wanted one of those to be hers.

She reached for a small control panel set at just a little bit above her eye level. Tapping the relevant square made the tiniest beep and the first of the two bows she’d been looking at began to make its way down to her hands on a small winch.

It didn’t take long and soon the bow was in her hands. It was somehow lighter than it had looked, and so despite it being nearly half as tall as Safi was, it looked like it would be rather easy to wield. Not that Safi couldn’t use a heavier bow, but the lighter her bow was the faster she could be and for her fighting style to be viable, the ability to run really fast was practically a necessity.
Safi gave the bow a quick onceover. It really was quite the work of art. The white was complimented beautifully with little gold inlays in just the right places, giving it a rather interesting pattern, which Safi noted rather absently would fit her own powers in a rather aesthetically pleasing way.

Glancing back up at the other bow showed that it had black highlights, which wouldn’t look nearly as good. That was definitely a factor to be considered, common sense be damned. Besides the two bows looked to be pretty much identical in terms of additional abilities.

Safi ran a finger down strings. It was definitely a compound bow, well not just any compound bow. By the glow on some of the pulleys and the way part of the string seemed to not quite exist on the same plane as the other strings made it very clear this was one of the newer models that employed a mix of range enchantments and pulleys working in tandem to make arrows shoot so much faster and further than either of the two methods could ever manage on their own.

Safi gave the contraption an experimental sniff, almost out of habit. It definitely didn’t have the polished wood smell any of the bows she’d been gifted in her early career. Instead, it was surprisingly a little like dark chocolate for some reason. That was strange. Normally the compounds used in weapons like this smelled of precisely nothing.

Safi shrugged, searching for the quiver attachment. It wasn’t in its normal place on most bows which was usually just above the grip near the knocking point. It seemed like this particular bow didn’t want to rely on the natural safety that style of quiver attachment provided, but instead there were what seemed quite clearly like two quiver attachments, attached one each to both of the limbs.

Safi pulled them off, frowning slightly. Why did this bow need two quivers and more importantly how did two quivers at the same time even work. Not questioning the wisdom of whoever made this masterpiece for too long, Safi slapped them both on her back.
Thankfully, they snapped on like normal, expanding into their full forms around Safi and forming into little pouches strapped around each of her shoulders. Only these were very different. Safi could recognize the little control panel on the rise and the trademark rim of an arrowhead selector switch. Those weren’t the odd parts. The odd part were the arrows. There was only one for each pouch, the difference between the two arrows being that one could clearly glow on command while the other one was standard. There was also the small problem of it looking like the arrowhead selector switches didn’t actually have a refill slot that normally sat ever so slightly uncomfortably against one’s shoulder blades.

Safi frowned. Had someone been using this already and they’d just forgotten to restock. She was just about to go ask when she found herself startled by Serafina again.

“Good choice, Safi. That matches you so perfectly.”

Safi found herself stammering out a reply again. She was just caught off guard. That is all. That is all.

“Th…thanks. I…uhh…. they haven’t…restocked though.”

Serafina frowned. “Hmm, one arrow each. Wait. Wait.” She ducked behind Safi to look at something poking one of the quivers dangerously close to Safi’s back before she emerged in front of Safi again. “Just as I thought?”

“Huh?” asked Safi, now a little confused.

“Well, this is a bit of a secret technology, but there was a presentation I attended the other day about. I’ll be honest I didn’t completely understand everything that they went on about, but the gist was this quiver is linked through some sort of tiny portal thing to a pretty large storage somewhere else making that quiver reload as you go. There’s a limit of course but there’s enough in that storage room for a sizeable war so it may as well be infinite ammunition when it comes to a small mission and of course it all in a tiny little footprint.

Safi’s eyes widened. “Wow. That is…”

“…awesome. Overpowered. Insane. All of the words, Safi. They used all of the words.”

Safi’s eyes widened even more. Serafina didn’t just gush about any weapon. Okay maybe she did, but not quite this much and quite this openly.

“You should-“

“I should-“

Safi giggled, waving at Serafina to finish her sentence first.

“Sorry. But. Yes. You should definitely use it. Aesthetically, functionally, its as if someone made it just for you.” Serafina frowned. “Did someone make it just for you?”

Safi giggled. “My family is rich, not that rich.”

Serafina rolled her eyes. “They are that rich.”

Safi nodded. “If you say so. Now what did you pick?” Almost like she’d been waiting for the question Serafina produced a carved wooden disk.

“Let me guess. Machine gun?”

Serafina grinned. “Some of us need some help in the offense department.”

Safi shook her head. “You’re going to talk up my abilities so much people are going to start actually believing I’m that powerful.”

“You are that powerful.”

Safi shook her head. “Fine. Fine. We’ll find out.”

“Let’s hope we don’t have to.”

“Actually yes. That is much, much better. This is like the first preliminary look. If we get attacked even at this point, well that’s not good is it?”

“It is not.”

With that, Serafina walked away again, leaving Safi holding what she was pretty certain was going to be her new weapon for some time. It would take quite a lot for something to turn out better than this. Tucking the quivers back into the limbs they’d come from, Safi found the switch to collapse the bow itself, folding it neatly into a small earbud case. Safi frowned, popping it open to find a pair of what looked like fully functioning wireless earbuds. Well, that was a good deal. If they did in fact work.

Tucking that away into a pocket, Safi gave a cursory glance in the shield section. One of those would also be useful even if she wasn’t exactly going to get a sword to use it with. Hopefully they had a more general area of effect shield. Well, a good one. They definitely had at least basic ones from what they’d learnt in training but those weren’t nearly popular enough for that many good ones to be listed.

Safi walked over anyway. It didn’t exactly hurt for to go through them anyway. If she didn’t find anything, she’d have to locate a sword with some sort of extra blocking ability or an actual honest to goodness shield, but she didn’t want to go to those options right away, not without checking at all.

Reaching the rows and rows of shields, Safi glanced past the obvious ones, both the lighter leather ones and the bulky and far too spikey looking metal ones. The ones she was interested in were the force field-based ones. She did not have the height to use any of the others without it being far too unwieldly, or far too small to be of any use.

Those shields happened to of course be on the highest tiers, looking past them, she finally found a singular row of area of effect shields. Perfect. That was what she needed. She stood on the tips of her toes, trying to get as close a look to them as she could. The initial scan was not promising. They were all rather boring and far too standard looking to really be of use.

The only thing that stood out was the very, very last one of the shelf that at the very least looked a little polished and wasn’t the standard black. She pressed the button to bring it down for closer inspection.

Closer inspection wasn’t exactly promising, but it was better than Safi had expected. It looked to be just about serviceable enough that it worked. It could create a decently sized shield in a radius around her. It looked to be able to switch between a sphere, a square and a dome so that was at least enough for it not be utterly useless. She would take it. She retracted it into its dormant form, which turned out to be a small pendant. Less useful than the earbuds, but at least it wasn’t too intrusive. It looked like it was activatable in dormant form too which was a lovely bonus. This was turning out to be a good choice after all.

Safi turned away from the rack of shields. That was all the weapons she was going to need, well perhaps she should grab a standard issue pistol or two. In the modern world, sometimes that was the best option. A familiar looking weapon that didn’t incite too much fear but could still get the job done was always a valuable asset and unlike she knew Serafina did, Safi did not just have one of those lying around that she carried everywhere.

Before she could forget, Safi walked over to that section to, only to run into Serafina browsing it.

“Ohh… didn’t expect to see you picking one of these up.”

“Oh yup. I didn’t either.”

“Then…” Safi trailed off. Serafina could be cryptic sometimes. Well, that was better. Better than whatever had gone on before when her brain had decided to go ahead and malfunction.

“I’m here to help you pick one genius.”

“Ohh.” Safi could feel the brain malfunctions starting again. That was not a good sign. That was definitely not a good sign. That shouldn’t have been happening. Right? That shouldn’t have been happening. Why was it happening? Why was that the thought suddenly overtaking her entire mind?

“You do need one of these, and no offense but you aren’t the best at picking the most useful ones when it comes to these.”

That snapped Safi out of her thoughts as she gasped as dramatically as she could manage.

“That was one time Serafina. That was one single time. Okay. The aesthetics of a weapon are far more important than you would think.”

“And you’ve just proved my point,” said Serafina, a rare smile on her face.

Safi pouted. “That’s not fair. You…you…you knew…you knew I was going to say that.”

Serafina shrugged. “Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. The real winner here is the truth after all.”

Safi tried to deepen her pout. It worked incredibly well on pretty much everyone. Why was Serafina being so stubborn and immune to it? Serafina remained her impassive self, just raising one eyebrow.

Safi huffed, loudly. Was she being childish about an incredibly valid point from Serafina? Absolutely. Was that going to change the way she was going to continue this argument? Absolutely not.

There was the tiniest look of concern from Serafina. Most people would have missed it but Safi had known Serafina for some time now and she was very good at details. She grinned triumphantly. Mission Accomplished.

“So, are you going to keep acting like a five year old or are you going to help me pick out something for you?”

Safi grumbled. Maybe the mission wasn’t accomplished after all. Well she’d gotten Serafina to show at least a tiny crack in that steely exterior. That was always going to be counted as a win.

She nodded, sighing in defeat. Okay she was definitely being a little too dramatic now. Hopefully Sally and Anna hadn’t been looking at this little exchange and marked Safi down as a problem for the mission to come.

Serafina for the, well she’d lost count by now, time managed to break into her thoughts again.

“How about this one?” She was offering up a sleek white and gold sidearm. It was surprisingly more customized than Safi was expecting, the weapon boasting more than the standard semi-automatic fire of their standard issue ones. This one appeared to be capable of both fully automatic fire and some sort of slightly weirdly placed shotgun mode.

The most surprising aspect wasn’t the shotgun mode or the customization though. The color scheme matched incredibly well with the outfit that Safi normally wore and to the bow she’d just chosen.

She frowned, wondering if perhaps Serafina was trying to joke about something and would perhaps snatch this back immediately. She looked up only to find… nothing. Well not nothing. It was invisible to most people, but Safi could see that Serafina was ever so slightly tense.

That was interesting. Either Serafina was waiting to make some sort of surprise move, which didn’t seem very likely. Serafina was not the type of person to do a random jump scare. She was the person who ruined jump scares for everybody by not reacting in the slightest.

The only other possibility was the Serafina was actually waiting to see what Safi thought of her selection, in a serious very much worried about Safi not liking it kind of way. But that….that would mean Serafina has specifically gone out of her way to pick something useful that also looked good…which was….Safi shut down those thoughts before they could start making connections that were too convenient to support their wild claims.

Safi’s smile softened at the idea, the pout and the frown both vanishing.

“I…I…I love it. Thank you. You…you…remembered the color…from…” Safi trailed off. To be completely honest she had absolutely no idea where she had been planning to take that conversation.

“Yes.” Serafina’s smile was back for another moment, although this one was different. Safi knew this smile. The one that was directed her way once in a blue moon leaving her with…nope…nope…the thoughts will not win today. Safi nodded.

“Thank you. Very much. I. Love it.”

“Well it’ll save your life so as much as the color is ridiculous I suppose it’s an adequate weapon.”

Safi felt herself blush slightly. “It’s an okay color…”

“White and gold. I suppose you could do worse.” Serafina shuddered. “Like pink.”

“That was one time Serafina. One time. I was trying something new. It was completely professional and I…”

Serafina cut off her poorly formed excuse with a wave. “Don’t worry. It didn’t look ridiculous on you. I don’t think any color can.”
Serafina froze. Safi frowned. Wait what? Had Serafina jus…

Serafina cleared her throat much louder than strictly necessary. “I will be over…. over there. That should be all for weapons.” She walked off before Safi could get a word in or process what had just happened.

Safi didn’t try to process it either. She was almost two hundred percent sure that was not something she wanted to process. She focused on finding the switch to collapse the gun into its inert form, which turned out to be a snazzy little bracelet. Well, that would go quite well with the necklace although figuring out how to draw said gun in a hurry was going to end up being a bit of a learning curve.

Safi hummed to herself as she finished setting up her little loadout and then practiced getting everything into its active form a couple of times. Thankfully the learning curve wasn’t quite as bad as she’d feared it was going to be. She’d be slinging these in and out as fast as a person with a regular holster in absolutely no time. That was good. There was absolutely no guarantee that their next destination was going to be as abandoned as it had appeared on the one tiny picture that they had.

Safi practiced her moves a couple more times just to be sure. One didn’t survive a real world attack by not double checking and putting in some extra practice. After she was reasonably satisfied, she finally returned to where the other three had formed a little circle.

“All ready to go, fairly lights?” whispered Serafina as soon as Safi was back. Safi froze. Where had…. where had that come from? Hadn’t Serafina just…this wasn’t fair. This wasn’t fair at all.

Safi did her best not to do something horrifying like squeak in front of Sally and Anna instead choosing to just nod and immediately file all thoughts away for later inspection. Safi was doing that quite a lot lately.

If Sally and Anna noticed anything they seemed to be nice enough not to mention anything, only turning to Safi expectantly like she was supposed to actually go ahead and answer that question. Well, she probably was. They’d spent a long time in here already.

Safi managed a nod. “Ready to go. Ready to go. I am ready to go.”

Anna nodded. “Lovely. Lovely. We can work with this. Excellent choices for both for you. I trust you’ve gone and picked up the field work outfits just in case we need it. Its unlikely we will, but of course I don’t need to tell either of you about the dangers of not being overprepared at all times.”

Everyone nodded at that, descending into a slightly awkward silence. It was Sally who ended up breaking the silence at the end.
“Alright then, its time to head towards the nearest portal and get to it. Let’s chop chop. We might end up with another mission before long given the kind of rush everything is in, and we want to get this knocked off if possible so that you guys can actually get a little bit of rest in case that happens.”

“Ohh.” Safi hadn’t thought about that. As much as she would love the idea of diving into several missions in a row, that would definitely end up being exhausting back to back before they even knew how long this first one to take.

“Yeah, so let’s roll.” Sally walked out with that statement followed closely by Anna. Serafina raised her eyebrows at Safi. Safi practically ran out at that. She wasn’t going to wait for Serafina to call her fairy lights again. Well she wanted her to call her that…bad thoughts. Bad thoughts. Safi kept walking.

Serafina did her best to keep her face impassive as they walked to the portal out. It was increasingly hard to stop herself from smiling like a lunatic while they were about to embark on such an exciting mission. Or maybe the smiling like a lunatic thing had a little more to do with Safi, but that was clearly not the right answer.

Serafina double checked all the weapons in her belt, distracting herself for the moment from the urge to smile. Sally and Anna were already walking quite far ahead, clearly taking Sally’s suggestion of going faster quite seriously.

Safi seemed to have gotten the memo too because she was walking fast too, still looking adorably flustered. Serafina did love seeing that particular face on her. Safi looked adorable when she went a little red like that. Serafina smiled at that again, making sure she was staring right down so no one would spot it. Not that there was anyone else in the hallway at the moment, but Serafina never took that chance.

It didn’t take too long for Sally to take them through an elevator. She held the door open for them as everyone sped up a little, well by everyone she meant mostly just herself, to slide into the elevator on time. Serafina turned to face the doors once inside as Sally punched a number in the basement levels. Serafina settled into wait as the elevator went down. Thankfully it looked like whoever designed this had been smart enough to not include elevator music.

The elevator was thankfully also fast, and it wasn’t long before Serafina was stepping out, slowing down enough to easily let everyone else go on ahead again, only this time Safi fell into step beside her.

“Hey, nervous for this visit?” asked Safi, looking all concerned and adorable. Serafina resisted the urge to smile again.

“Hmm, well I suppose it would be a little unusual if I wasn’t a bit nervous. It’s a first mission after all even if it shouldn’t actually be so bad.”

“Mmm hmm.” Safi flushed a little. “Sorry, that was a dumb question to ask. I… sorry. I am not very good at the whole small talk thing. I…” Serafina held out a hand before Safi could spiral too far down that path.

“No no.” Serafina shook her head. “It’s not a stupid question. It’s a normal question to ask. Are you nervous?”

Safi nodded. “Yeah. Although umm…” Safi looked down before she managed to look back up at Serafina again. “Is it bad that I’m more excited about this than I am nervous?”

Serafina shook her head. “Of course not.”

“Ohh…thank you…thank you for saying that.”

Serafin nodded. “Of course. You’re Welcome.”

Safi nodded again. “Thank you again about all the weapons. I umm…I’m excited to see how it works out…you know in case things go wrong, not that I’m excited about us getting into any trouble and needing to use these weapon or anything. I just…you know.” Safi waved her hands wildly.

Serafina shook her head, letting the tiniest hint of a smile show. That did the trick and Safi froze. It was always so easy to get Safi to listen when she did that. The weird part was she wanted Safi to listen. Well she was pretty sure it wasn’t anything weird, she just liked to get people to listen to her when she was trying to say something and that just so happened to be an effective method on Safi. That was all. Why would it be anything else?

“I know the feeling,” she said once she was sure that Safi was paying attention and not just spiraling. “Of course we never wish that we actually end up being attacked but being excited to use cool weapons is just something that happens.” Serafina did a little wink, deciding it was time to drop her new favorite nickname. Oh, it was wonderful that she’d managed to remember it.

“And I wouldn’t mind seeing fairy lights in action either. You’re going to set the world on fire Safi?” Safi looked a little panicked and Serafina backtracked. “Not literally of course. That was just a figure of speech. I meant that everyone is going to love you.”

Safi took a second to return to just her normal level of panicked. “Oh. Ohhh. Ohhh. Ohhh.”

Serafina couldn’t help it, reaching over to pat Safi gently on the back. She wasn’t entirely sure if that ended up making the situation worse or not but Safi seemed to eventually regain control of her vocal cords.

“Th…thank you...” she stammered.

“You’re welcome.”

“D..do you…really think that?”

“Of course,” said Serafina, not a trace of doubt in her words, because she really did think, well not think, she knew that Safi was awesome, and everyone was going to love her.

“Th..thank you. Again.” Said Safi, falling silent after that. She looked like wanted to say more, but thought better of it. Serafina didn’t push it. Safi might be an open book more often than was best for Safi’s wellbeing, but Serafina could at least do her the courtesy of not bringing it up.

Serafina gave her one tiny smile in return, before turning back towards where they were headed. That was definitely enough smiles for the day. Safi was going to end up giving Serafina an actual smile on her face at this rate. She shuddered. She remembered their last few months in training.

Safi had made her burst out laughing. Sometimes multiple times in the same day. That was an incredibly dangerous power. Sometimes Serafina wondered if that was the real magic Safi possessed. Not the one that could level a small mountain or her ridiculous accuracy, the sheer ability this one being had to infect everyone with happiness. Happiness that didn’t ask anything of you, didn’t come with strings attached. A selfless happiness that infected absolutely everything it touched.

Serafina sighed and checked her stashed weapons one last time. Those were the ones Serafina needed to be reflecting on in this moment, not about Safi’s infectious smiles and whatever magical properties they may or may not possess.

It didn’t take much longer after that for them to reach the portal. It was a little bit further out that normal according to what Anna said, presumably because all of the easily accessibly portals that happened to be nearby were currently in use as people had to rapidly deal with whatever the heck was currently going on. Serafina was just glad they hadn’t been tossed into that. That’s when it would be clear the agency was in a desperate situation.

Anna stopped them at the door to the portal.

“So here we are, about to step out into the field.” She took a deep breath. “You all ready for it? I know you are of course, in all of the officially ways and probably mentally too, but there’s something rather different about theoretically being completely capable of stepping out into the field and doing things and actually being out in the field for the first time.”

Safi just shrugged. “I… I guess there’s not a lot we can do except go in and actually find out.”

Serafina grunted in agreement.

Sally smirked at the two of them. “That’s the spirit.”

Anna nodded. “But. Please. There’s still a point of no return even after we go through the portal. Keep in mind that you really won’t be judged if you turn back at that point. A fighter brave enough to admit when a fight might be beyond them is the kind of fighter we want because we tend to prefer them alive.”

Serafina nodded along with Safi. Serafina of course had absolutely no plans of ever actually turning back. This mission simply didn’t seem to be threatening enough to warrant that, but she wasn’t stupid enough to go ahead with something that genuinely did seem like it would result in her being in over her head.

“Wonderful. Now that we’ve got those things out the way. Let’s not waste any more time. We’ve already spent perhaps a little too long in the planning phase here. Well, we’re technically rushing into this field visit, but we’re also late. It’s…complicated and I’m sure I don’t need to explain why to either of you.”

Serafina nodded. The agency had spent quite a lot of time teaching them about the basics of all of that. Serafina was sure there’d be more to learn later but for now she did understand what Anna was talking about.

“Good,” said Anna. She quickly opened the door to the portal leading them in. Sally walked around in a circle, probably inspecting for any dust or debris that could accidentally follow them into the portal while Anna headed to the computer to program their destination.

Serafina stood there with Safi, trying to absorb as much information as she could from watching the two in action. Safi seemed to have a similar idea or was lost in thought because she was staring in the direction of the portal at the moment.

Sally finished her sweep of the room pretty quickly, walking up to stand with Serafina and Safi after she was done. It looked like despite whatever mayhem was going on, the portals were being kept in decent condition for the moment. Another sign that the situation wasn’t too, too terribly bad just quite yet. That was good. Less chance of them being thrown into the deep end too early. As much as Serafina loved a good fight, that seemed like it would be a terrible first week.

Anna seemed to finish up with settings as she stood up and walked over to join the rest of them.

“We’re all set. Our landing location is going to be a bit rough because we don’t exactly have a hundred presets into this particular place. It really is the most random and very deserted old town that’s definitely in the middle of what you would call nowhere.

“That’s fun,” said Sally, with a sigh. “At least if we ever have to come back again, we can figure out a better place to assign a preset to or use this one.”

“Small mercies. Well sort of. If we end up using either of those techniques that means this is going to end up being a complicated thing to solve. A nice simple open and shut case would be lovely right about now.”

“Amen.”

Everyone nodded to that one.

“On that lovely wish, let’s head in and hope for the best.” Anna went through the portal first, vanishing almost instantly. Sally gestured to the two of them.

“You two want me to bring up the rear or come in after me?”

Serafina looked at Safi. She was still staring a little frozen at the portal in front of them. She shrugged.

“I think we can bring up the rear. Right Safi?”

Safi made a sound that could vaguely be interpreted as a hum of acknowledgment or maybe approval. Serafina was good enough at reading Safi to figure that detail out.

“Suit yourself.” Sally walked right into the portal, no hesitation again much like Anna just had.

“So…” started Serafina. This was definitely not right. She was never the person to initiate a conversation. Thankfully Safi chose that moment to return to the waking world.

“Let’s go. Do you want to go first?” asked Safi, back to her usual bubbly self again. Maybe she’d overcome her nervousness or she’s gone and crested the peak of nervousness. Serafina wasn’t going to question it. Yet.

“Uhhh well I don’t really have a preference on that. I’ll be honest. I don’t particularly fancy bringing up the rear but then I don’t particularly hate it either.”

“That’s…. well.” Safi let out a soft little sight. “Funnily enough I normally like to go second, and since that’s not an option I’m at a bit of a loss on how to get through this too.”

“Well going third is better than last. Or second from last.”

“That’s a fair point. But…” Safi trailed off.

It was Serafina’s turn to sigh. “Well this is a big portal meant to transport entire teams if they’re in a hurry.”

“So, we go together?” asked Safi. Serafina resisted the urge. She had not wanted to be the one to go ahead and suggest that.
Serafina nodded.

“I like that plan.” Safi nodded. “Uhh… countdown or do we just.”

“I think we can just go in. No need to make things any more dramatic than they absolutely have to be. I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

“That seems like a pretty reasonable plan to me.”

“Lovely.”

Both of them quickly stepped up to the portal. Anna and Sally were probably already starting to wonder what was taking them so long to walk three entire steps.

With one last deep breath Serafina stepped into it as the same moment as Safi. She braced herself as the temperature shifts hit suddenly making the whole place feel much colder. Luckily it didn’t last for very long before things heated up again. And then it got much, much hotter. Serafina gritted her teeth again. At least these newer portals had been able to eliminate the weird dampness that tended to accompany earlier version. Temperature was manageable in the right outfit which Serafina was of course wearing.
Luckily the portal seemed to be coming to an end because Serafina could feel the telltale sensation of falling. She braced herself for impact, feeling her hand brush up against Safi’s. She tried very hard to ignore the urge to hold on. It was just a natural instinct to be safer while falling, nothing more. Serafina wasn’t going to just give in. Absolutely not.

They landed seconds later, hands just barely touching before they both stepped out of the portal and slightly away from each other.

Serafina could’ve sworn she heard and aww and Sally whispering something to Anna but she didn’t think much of it. At least it looked like they weren’t about to get called out on taking a little bit too long to go through that portal.

“Welcome to your first mission,” said Anna with a little flourish and Serafina took the opportunity to look around.

This place definitely looked… well Serafina couldn’t really tell. It was ridiculously dark. Judging from quite how dark it was, it had to be just past midnight. What little moonlight there was did barely anything even through the relatively cloudless looking sky.

The only thing that Serafina could confidently identify in this mess was the fact that it was very dusty. The ground also felt distinctly sandy under her feet. They were definitely in some sort of desert town. Well, a desert. If there was town ahead of them or around them, Serafina wasn’t making out a single thing. It was almost as if the little light that should’ve been present from the sky, especially in the middle of a desert with such clear skies was somehow prevented from reaching this place.

“Well, this is a bit anticlimactic. I was not expecting it to be quite this dark in here. The time zone did put is in relative darkness, which honestly is usually better for exploring and given this was a desert I was expecting visibility to be better but we’ve got definitely some magic in the air. We’d have to run tests to see if this is casted by hand or some sort of effect this place naturally has. It really is impossible to tell much from those photos or the descriptions that we do have.”

“It is a little unusual,” confirmed Sally. “Hopefully it’s a simple and easily explainable quirk and not an unwanted twist in the tale.” She fished out a light and flicked it on. Serafina frowned. It looked like the batteries were out.

Then Sally turned it to her face and to them. The light was immediately blinding, and Serafina had to squint. Wait a minute. That meant. The flashlight was not out of battery but.

“Well if we needed any more confirmation that this place has definitely been made specifically so that not much light is able to get in that’s our confirmation. Flashlights are not going to work.”

“Light spell?” suggested Anna.

“Might be our only option unless we want to return in the morning.”

“Well, that’s a long wait.”

Sally raised her hand and was about to utter something when Safi spoke up.

“I umm…. I can try. I can. I can light things passively.”

“Oh yes you can. Sorry. I completely goofed on that. It’ll be a good test to see what strength this spell is at too.” Sally gestured for her to continue.

Safi was bright red, but she nodded. “I. Well. Here goes nothing.”

Safi closed her eyes for a moment and snapped her fingers. Serafina watched like she always did. Like she had since the very first moment that she'd seen Safi do it. It was mesmerizing. Every. Single. Time. Serafina didn't know why. She didn't think she really wanted to know why. It was too powerful.

The light as it always did, started from Safi's heart. It shouldn't have been anything special. A lot of people had their passive magic start from the heart. Except that just wasn't true. The brain was where most passive magic started. Halo's around the head. Tentacles that sprouted from hair. Vines that grew out of beards. Almost every student in that group much like every other sorcerer to pass through those halls had a passive magic ability that triggered from the head. It was how the body worked.

And then there was Safi. Serafina had only ever seen one other student use passive magic that worked via the heart and well that was just nothing like Safi's. Maybe she was biased because she was on Safi's team.

The light took a moment to spread. Maybe magic was slow to work here, or perhaps Safi was nervous, Serafina couldn't tell, but it took a moment for the light at the center of her chest to ignite fully and reach its full potential. It shone right through what Safi was wearing, a beam of light that was more powerful than any flashlight Serafina had ever seen. It spread after a moment, going in tiny sparkling veins that wrapped around Safi. Well. Serafina knew it happened that way, those weren't currently glowing bright enough to see.

Safi smiled. "Uhh... does. Does that work?"

Sally laughed. "Well. See for yourself."

Serafina turned to survey the impact of the light. She immediately had to restrain her desire to roll her eyes at Safi. The light cut through the darkness like a hot knife through butter. And suddenly they might as well have come here in the morning.

The light from Safi lit the area up like a miniature sun, lighting up the entire area and Serafina could now see that they were in fact inside the town, surrounding by a whole multitude of silent buildings all around them. Either the magic in this town had been cast by someone shortsighted enough to completely disregard the existence of magic as a light source or Safi's magic was so powerful that it cut through the dense fog meant to darken this place so easily it might as well not be there. Serafina would bet money that it was the second option. As much as fairy lights was a very good nickname she was never going to stop using, Safi was definitely much more like a miniature sun.

Safi somehow managed to go redder. "Ohh...I. That. That looks like enough light."

Anna nodded. "I should think so. This is definitely more light than we'd get even at noon with the spells surrounding this village."
"Ohh... ohhh. That's good I guess."

"Very good. Now let's take advantage of that and actually search this place before we can find out if someone did actually cast these spells and how annoyed said someone is about us demolishing them."

"That sounds good to me," said Sally, already walking into the heart of the village. Anna followed suit and this time Safi was right behind them, Serafina bringing up the rear. They would need the light after all. Serafina took that moment to check behind them. It was incredibly unlikely they would be followed at this time in the middle of nowhere, but Safi's light was also the brightest thing in probably a ten mile radius. Everything that could see was going to be drawn to it to some degree and the last thing Serafina wanted was to be jumped from behind by some sort of desert monster.

For the moment all she could see was sand and dust. The dust was definitely going to end up being a big problem at some point. Visibility was fine for the moment with the light they now had, but anything a little further out would be completely invisible. At least there was comfort in the fact that nothing they couldn't see would be able to see them either. Unless the dust was also magic somehow but that seemed like a stretch for the moment.

Serafina gave the place one more cursory glance. Nothing. Nothing that was visible or actively trying to hunt them at least. She turned back towards the group and continued to follow them. Anna and Sally had already come to a stop at something that Serafina currently couldn't make out because they were standing around it while Safi seemed to be looking around for threats much like Serafina herself had been. She walked over to join Safi for the moment.

"Spot anything?"

"Nope. Either they are all great at not being spotted by anyone or there's just nothing out there. Well, there's the..."

"Dust. Yeah."

"Yup. So. All we can do is focus on our task I guess and just be aware. This place is horrible for predicting what's about to emerge from the dust and the gloom."

"It really is."

"Over here." said Anna. Safi and Serafina exchanged a look. Well, that sounded interesting. They were both soon standing beside Anna and Sally who were know kneeling by something.

Anna looked up. "We found the body. It looks undisturbed if all of the data that we have so far gotten is accurate. I'm going to assume its accurate for the moment because that's simply the easiest place to start from without getting overly paranoid and overcomplicating our first checkup."

Serafina nodded again.

"So, what are we looking at?" said Safi. "Anything that's immediately different from what we knew already?"

"Nope. Pretty much checked for that already. At least visually. Of course, we're going to run a proper scan and do a side-by-side check with the onboard AuI but I have a feeling it’s not going to say much either."

“So, we learn nothing from the body then?” asked Serafina. That didn’t sound right, but this was starting to trend in that direction with how dead everything here seemed to be besides the odd darkness spell and the dust.

“Not necessarily. We’re no longer going to be grasping at straws to know what condition this body is in. We can take all the pictures we need and…” Anna sighed. “We sort of end up having to do the job of the people who were reporting to us, but well its what you gotta do if you want to solve these.”

“Oh please, you love documenting these things,” said Sally.

Anna let out another sigh. For the first time Serafina noticed that through the cheery smile and general herculean look, Anna had the tiniest hint of fatigue running through her. Given quite how experienced Anna was being a certified team leader, to show a crack like that must mean she was running on fumes.

Sally seem to have spotted it too because she reached over to pat Anna on the shoulder. “Except dusty deserts ruin the mood huh?” Sally gave her another pat on the shoulder.

“Can one of you go through the basic evidence collecting process while we finalize the parameters we’ll have to scan once we’re back?”

Safi stepped up instantly, before even Serafina could. They both ended up raising their hands.

Sally looked between the two of them. “Okay, do it together, but make sure one of you or both of you are also keeping an eye on our surroundings. Anna and I going to be pretty engrossed in this so there’s a chance we end up missing something.”

Serafina nodded. “We’ll be careful. And make sure nothing interrupts us without our knowledge.”

“Atta girl.”

Sally and Anna stood up and walked a few feet off to the left while Safi knelt. She fished out her camera. Serafina had to suppress the urge to grin. Everytime she saw that camera she had no choice. The standard issue ones were either dull gray or black, hardly anything worth looking at. Their cases often screamed “Functional!”

Safi’s was anything but. It was the same model, but she’d gone and gotten it painstakingly modified to be white and gold to match the rest of her. That wasn’t really what made Serafina smile. That particular response was mostly from the black lettering that covered most of it.

Messages. At least a dozen of them. All from the people she’d helped out during her pseudo field tests for the final semester. Given Safi had somehow managed to get a surprising number of cases to do with children (Serafina to this day maintained that Safi had somehow put in a special request, the probabilities just didn’t make sense otherwise) and so most of the messages were spelt wrong and just barely legible. However, they were also the sweetest thank you messages Serafina had ever seen and Serafina could’ve sworn she’d seen Safi cry several times looking at that. Even Serafina had been visited by the onion gremlins.
It was the sweetest thing ever to put on a camera that would mostly take photos of the most gruesome and mysterious crime scenes in the world and the contrast simple made her smile. Perhaps it was because it exemplified what Safi brought to the table. No matter how gruesome or how deadly the case, Safi knew only one mode of operation. Kindhearted and loving.

Serafina shook her had as the first camera flash landed. She was not meant to admiring Safi’s camera, she was supposed to help and look around. Given Safi had stepped right into do the first stage with the pictures, Serafina stood up straight, automatically switching on to her surroundings to monitor them. It was still just a lot of dust.

Serafina kept up her task for about five more minutes before a gentle tap to her shoulder made her turn around. It was Safi.
“I took the pictures. Do you want to take the first couple of samples?”

Serafina nodded. “Sure.” Safi smiled, putting away her camera and standing in the position Serafina had been standing in just moments ago. Serafina managed the tiniest of smiles to Safi’s back. She had standards to maintain after all and then knelt by the body, walking a little closer.

She studied it, identifying what the important places would be to sample here. She fished out the gauges. They were all of course black, a little darker black than the standard issue but pretty much indistinguishable from the standard issue version if one didn’t have them side by side.

She started with magical readings, running it in the helical pattern that she’d learned and perfected over the past year and a half. It was a bit odd. She still thought this was some sort of prank by the inventor that no one had ever managed to see through, but it worked. The results were underwhelming.

Serafina frowned. Maybe a little too underwhelming. They didn’t really have any data to work with when it came to background magical potential in this area but given the dust and the weird darkness this certainly wasn’t a place devoid of magic. And the magic potential in this body was officially weaker than the background radiation in your average village. It was too low. Almost as if someone had taken care to go ahead and scrub away some magic. Without those background readings Serafina couldn’t confirm, but she flagged it anyway.

Resisting the urge to immediately get up and get some readings to start processing background Serafina shifted, getting more readings from slightly different parts of the body, looking for an average so she could confirm this ridiculous number was in fact the right one.

It didn’t take long, some of the readers going even lower than her first measurement. There was definitely something there. A magic potential didn’t drop that low naturally or with some sort of attack through an animal. This was done by somebody. It would be a stretch to assume the murderer did this, but the fact that someone had done something made for a lead. Possibly the first real lead.

Serafina finished up with that particular device and looked up at Safi. She sat there a moment, trying to think of the best way to go about this. She could try and get a reader with a couple of other parts too, but would Safi want to take turns in that department. Or if she was being honest, did she want to discuss this potential lead on the magic with Safi before she proceeded to the next part.
Safi stopped her from having to make that decision, turning around with a smile.

“Find anything good?”

Serafina obviously couldn’t just lie to something like that, she leapt to her feet, brandishing the device in her hand.

“What do you think?”

“The magic potential reading is… oh. Wait a minute. If I’m not mistaken that’s supposed to be like twice that for background levels isn’t it? That’s basically negligible.”

“Mmm Hmm.”

“That’s a reading you can’t see even in a proper dead spot because a dead spot would still be low enough for the value to be truly negligible while this one isn’t. Not to mention this place couldn’t…”

Serafina nodded along.

“Right, you probably already realized all of this. Sorry, I’m rambling.”

“No, No. That’s reasonable. I didn’t tell you after all.” Safi just turned ever so slightly red. “At any rate, I actually wanted to get your immediate reaction so that I could see if we were on the same page about this. And you did react exactly like I did, so I’m thinking to answer your question I did find something good.”

“That’s great. Although we should…”

“Background potential, yup. I was just noting that down.”

“Oh actually. You should have more tests to run right? I assume you started with magic because of the obvious magic in the air.”
Serafina nodded. “I do have yet to run the other two readings.”

“Good. You work on those. I’ll get background for potential. I can send the drones out to scan it and keep an eye on our surroundings at the same time.”

“Thank you. That would be perfect.”

“Anytime.” Safi held out a hand to hi five. Of course, she’d go the high five route instead of the handshake. Serafina didn’t let that stop her from completing the high five however, before she turned back towards the body.”

Serafina pulled out the second of her devices. Next up was psionic potential. It wasn’t terribly like anything would show up, but also given the lack of particularly prominent marks of death, that was a reasonable enough thing to check. Certainly, would be more useful than the kinetic potential. There was, at least to the naked eye, absolutely no signs that kinetics were involved in this.
Kinetics were one of the few things that couldn’t easily be hidden from the naked eye, so Serafina was mostly confident about that assessment. Of course, she would check in just a moment after- Her thoughts were cut off by the psionic counter spiking.

At least that wasn’t a surprise. Although, as Serafina took a second look, she couldn’t help think something was ever so slightly fishy about it. This reading was closer to normal. Well normal for a certain level of psionic attack, but this time it was too perfect. At least it felt that way. Serafina would certainly be going out on a bit of a limb to say this really was odd. Many more tests were needed but the numbers here were definitely in the weird category. She needed to check with Safi again.

She glanced up. Safi was sweeping the area slowly with her eyes. It didn’t look like her background scans had returned just quite yet. Serafina could wait a minute before getting another opinion on these. She was okay with that. She did also have to get this kinetic scan out of the way and given it was likely not going to yield anything, it was best to have it out the way.

Serafina quickly brought out the third of her devices and set about scanning in the usual pattern once again. It didn’t take long for her readings to start coming in and for once things really were predictable. Either this murderer had adjusted every reading, but had only succeeded in making the kinetics one be normal looking, or kinetics really just hadn’t been used.

Serafina took one final set of readings, following through on it all to double check the average. None of the readings fell into a category that could be considered suspicious. At least as long Serafina’s instruments weren’t broken. It was incredibly unlikely, but Serafina was never one to rule such matters out.

She finished up the last of the procedure for that and set it aside. It wasn’t going to get flagged as an anomaly, but it didn’t hurt to double check that with Safi too, just in case Safi could spot something in those readings that Serafina didn’t see. There was always something hiding in these readings.

She stood up, walking over to Safi. She was still staring off into the distance, so Serafina leaned over to pat her gently on the shoulder. Safi whirled around almost instantly.

“Find anything more?”

“Yes. I also happen to have finished all the readings.”

“Oh. That’s wonderful. I unfortunately am still waiting for the second drone to come back. Kinetic came back quite quickly with a pretty normal and pretty low reading as… is most often how things go with these murders. Magic confirmed our suspicions, the background is higher than those readings, higher even than the average. In fact significantly higher than average, so these readings are significantly lower than average.”

“Well that very much confirms that the magic reading is odd here. We can definitely flag it in the notes.”

“We can. One step in some sort of direction. I suppose there’s no telling if it’s the right one or the wrong one.”

“There is not.”

“So what did you see for psionic and kinetic?” asked Safi, moving closer.

“Kinetic was boring. As expected, I think.”

“Yeah when the body looks this clean without injuries, its really hard to think kinetics were involved in anyway.”

“Yeah. Although there is always the chance it was doctored too, only this time they did it well.”

“True. I suppose we can keep that in mind in case the others don’t really pan out. Or in fact if they do because that’s good evidence that this murderer or whoever adjusted this knew to throw investigators off.”

Serafina nodded. “Yes. Yes. My thoughts exactly really. I’m glad you confirmed that.”

“Of course. So, what about psionic?”

“Oh, so that. That was. Well, actually just tell me what you think of this. Before I inevitably end up influencing you one way or the other.”

Safi studied the meter that Serafina offered up, taking a hold of Serafina’s hand to hold it steady. The tiny shiver that spread down Serafina’s hand clearly had nothing to do with Safi’s contact. This place just had unsettling vibes about it.

“Its perfect.” Said Safi. “Very normal. Except.”

Serafina held her breath, waiting for the verdict. It looked like her assessment was correct, or at least it was the same as Safi’s which was basically the same thing. Safi was always right.

Serafina didn’t say anything. She could prompt her by accident if she showed any reaction. It took a minute for Safi to properly process whatever thought she was currently having.

“Its too normal. Too. Perfect.”

“And why do you say that?”

“The numbers are an exact match for a certain kind of psionic attack. To my knowledge a real psionic attack that isn’t simulated wouldn’t leave a signature that perfect unless it was the second after it was cast. Clearly this has been here for longer than second in just the time we were around it.”

“Thank you. That is in fact exactly what I thought. I wanted to see what you said.”

Safi smiled. “Lovely. So… I think we have a second point of interesting there.”

“I think we do.”

“Anything else we need to check?”

“Not really. Well besides confirming our findings on your psionic background check.”

“Yes. The kinetic background check like I said earlier, was completely normal. At least as far as these devices can tell. So yeah, we can ignore kinetic in our initial investigation from the way its looking at the moment. It is up to Anna and Sally if they maybe have some better evidence to work with over there.”

Serafina nodded. “Yes. And ohh.” There was the slight whirr of a drone.

“Psionic is back,” said Safi, with a smile, reaching for the small drone. Serafina had to stifle another smile. Even the drone Safi used was a lovely white and gold beauty. Like many other things Safi owned, it also told a story. A rather wholesome one as it often tended to be when Safi was around.

Serafina managed not to get lost in daydreaming about said story this time however, which was good, given that she had to immediately study those readings to confirm their suspicions about psionic energy.

“Okay. Okay. Okay.” Said Safi as she reviewed the data, flipping through it methodically.

As Serafina was leaning in for a better look Sally and Anna walked over from where they’d been.

“How are things coming along here?” asked Sally.

Serafina stepped away, turning to answer with a small smile. “I think its gone fairly well. About as well as one can get in a situation like this. We’ve got a non-zero amount of leads to work off of. And this latest one is in fact going to be confirming something.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful to hear. We’ve managed to work out the best things to look for as well, so once we manage to return I think we’ll have a nice little set of things to work towards and make some real progress.”

Serafina nodded.

“So yeah, go ahead and confirm this last suspicion of yours. Anna and I will finish the body up and tag it for transport if required.”
Serafina nodded and turned back to Safi while those two knelt by the body again.

“I think we hit the jackpot on the psionic,” said Safi once she noticed Serafina. “These readings are all incredibly weird and way too consistent. Someone did a very shoddy job of adjusting levels, or they were just aiming to throw people off somehow.”

Serafina nodded. “Yeah, that is…phew.” The readings certainly were something to look at it. If the readings on the body were a bit off, these ones were so bad it looked like someone had intentionally tried to do a shoddy job and covering something up. A cover up of a cover up if you will.

“Well, we definitely will have something to work with back at the agency.”

“Oh, we absolutely will. This is going to be quite an exciting first case.”

“Sadly, it might just be.”

Safi nodded and patted her on the back. “Sorry I know you wanted something simple and fast.”

Serafina tried not to smile again. Gosh she needed to find a spell of some sort to stop feeling the urge to do that. It was getting disturbingly common now. Serafina couldn’t possibly allow that.

“I’ll live,” she said finally.

Safi smiled, that adorable little smile that could probably make the physical embodiment of grumpiness smile. Serafina couldn’t be blamed for smiling back at that.

“Glad to hear that,” said Safi. Her voice became a little quieter. “I. would miss you.”

Serafina chose not to react to that. Mostly because her only options were squeak or squeal or kiss. Wait what? Kiss. Thoughts bad. Thoughts bad. Delete. Delete Hard Drive. Erase. Control plus X. Terminate program.

It took Serafina a few moments to realize that Safi was in fact tapping on her shoulder an looking concerned. She managed to snap back to reality.

“Sorry. Sorry. I was. Lost in thought for a moment. What were you saying?”

“No… nothing. Just. Just asking why you see… seemed to freeze there for a moment.”

“Y..yeah so… sorry. Just. Thoughts.”

“Thoughts can be a lot sometimes.”

“They can.”

“So. Back to the mission at hand.”

“Yes. That.”

“Psionic readings. Weirdness. Possibly complicated.”

“Yes.” Serafina paused. “I um. Also. Uh. Just. Wanted to. Well. You know. I would miss you two if you weren’t there. I. Appreciate that. You should know that.”

Safi smiled. Oh, that smile. Serafina could…but definitely should not think about how amazing that was for another fifteen minutes. She had already almost given herself away.

Not that there was anything to give away. She was just being a little softer than normal because Safi just inspired that in people. A strong case could be made it wasn’t even just people. Everything liked her. That was a rule. And why wouldn’t it be a rule. She was so… Serafina stopped herself just in time again. Gosh she needed to figure out how to not think about Safi every fifteen seconds.
Safi reached out to pat her shoulder carefully, looking almost. Cautious. That wasn’t a look Serafina saw too often.

“I know. I can tell. Thank you for saying it though. You didn’t have to.”

Serafina wanted very much to point out that there was no world where it made sense for her to assume Safi would understand and say nothing, but she knew it was pointless to try and counter Safi especially when it came to arguments like this one.

Serafina nodded. “Thank you.”

Safi smiled brighter in return. Sometimes Serafina wondered if Safi’s teeth were made of the power that she commanded. Someone’s teeth couldn’t possibly be that bri…and she was doing it again. Trying not to audibly groan Serafina nodded and turned towards the readings they’d had.

“So. Shall we pack up then? We just have to write up the officially report, let Sally and Anna know everything and well I guess get started on the whole thing.”

“Yup. Yup. I’ll get the drones while you get the scans.”

“I like the sound of that.”

“You got it partner.” Safi winked and turned to do her thing. Serafina allowed herself the tiniest of smiles before turning to do her own work. She refused to mentally congratulate herself for not reacting too much to that wink.

It didn’t take her too long to finish everything up. Everything they worked with was designed with speed and efficiency in mind, mostly because cases that got turned over to them were about as time sensitive as they came. Soon Serafina was turning back to Safi.

“Done?”

Safi nodded. “All ready to go.”

“Did I hear someone wanting to leave?” said Sally, walking up with Anna.

“We’re done,” said Safi, sounding a little excited. “So much to look into. It’s a bit more than I guess we were hoping to because everyone wanted a simple case but it does look like there’s going to be something pretty interesting here.”

Sally nodded. “It happens. We’ll see. At least it seems we coordinated pretty well there by accident because everything on our end is taken care of too. I think if those leads turn out quite as promising as you two suggest, it’ll likely be getting brought back within the next day or two.”

Serafina nodded.

“Wonderful. So, we’re ready to leave then,” said Anna, stepping into the middle of their little impromptu circle. “We’ve got leads, everything that needs to be done as far as preliminary investigation is concerned is done and I believe there’s nothing left.”

No one said anything for a moment until Anna broke the silence.

“That’s your cue to say if there’s anything else that I might have missed.”

Serafina shook her head.

“Nothing. Not that I can think of anyway.”

“Lovely. Then there’s nothing stopping us. Let’s head back to that portal.” Anna smiled and turned to leave, Sally quickly catching up to walk beside her. Safi, of course because the universe was cruel, fell into step beside Serafina.

Safi was about to say something when Anna suddenly came to a stop in front of them. Serafina only just about managed to avoid walking right into her.
