It’s not cool to be popular anymore – ask anyone:
if you’re pretty, you’re a bitch,
if you wear make-up, you’re a slut,
and don’t get me started on those low slung jeans.
In fact, we like nothing better than to see you taken down
preferably in public, or on national TV
(lord knows we love a loser).
The people have a right to gorge on your beautiful flesh
and to throw you in the gutter when they’re through,
because that’s what we mean by freedom of speech:
the freedom to hate anybody
as popular as you.
Got a poem or short story you want me to critique?

There is only one success: to be able to spend your life in your own way, and not to give others absurd maddening claims upon it. (C D Morley)

This is something unique I've seen here! I really like this piece. Didn't strike me as poetry the first time I went through it. It feels like the opening to something else. Kind of reminds me of a book jacket or back cover summary.

The last two lines are somewhat odd to the rest of the piece. That's the only opinionated-flaw I can really find in this.

As always,

POKE

wow, it's like school on the weekend! As bad an association as that is, very good work. I agree that the last two lines seem out of place.

I also liked the idea here.

Also agree that it doesn't exactly read like poetry.

But I liked the last few lines the best. May be out of place a little, but they show the point and are the most poetic--I think anyway.

Happy Editing!

I like it. I think the last lines are nice how they tie it all together, not out of place at all...But i'm not really an expert on poetry... And I agree with RoseThorn about the book cover thing, I'd definitely read the book that this was on the back of!
It's nice to read poetry that isn't dripping with utter poetic-ness. Awesome Job!

Other people have said this doesn't read like poetry. I beg to differ - it does: the tone of your voice, your word choice, and line strucutre - short, sharp and abrupt - matches your content and what you are overall trying to say. Usually, I would like more imagery, more imagination, more creativity, but you know what? In this case it doesn't really matter. I have this morbid fascination while I am reading it precisely because you are so blunt, so in-your-face, so sure of yourself and what you are saying. And I reckon, too, that it's true, so true. It made me think which is ALWAYS a good thing :)

... Navita, stop reviewing, start looking at dates that pieces were posted, and then thank me for saving you from more embarrassment.
