Jerica nodded, biting her lip. “… I might have been a little harsh.” Was that close enough to an apology to count? She didn’t want to have to actually say it.

(I can't say it's an unrealistic progression. It makes sense he'd have this sort of arc; back when I was younger I assumed he was the "water off a duck's back" type, but it turns out that's all a facade and if we push him enough he shows just how much the Ash family has damaged him.)
"Thank you for being honest." He put a hand on the door of the nursery and glanced at her for a moment. "That's a rare quality in a human being."

Jerica blinked at him, genuinely surprised by that response. Maybe he wasn’t as immature as she’d thought. Maybe these were the redeemable qualities Ky seemed to see in him. “I…” she gave a hesitant nod.

He dipped his head, then opened the door, straightening as he did so and sliding into an easy smile that only barely reached his eyes. "There are my kiddos!" he exclaimed, spreading his arms wide." "Papa!!!!" Oscar bolted toward him, bouncing up and down in excitement.

Ky wiped her eyes, embarrassed that she’d been caught blubbering and quickly turned away. Her chest felt tight and she wandered over to the fireplace quickly to give herself an excuse not to look toward her father. She didn’t want people to see her being a whiny little bitch baby.

Tomhas's heart sank as he saw the tears in Ky's eyes, but he hugged Oscar tightly and swung him into his arms. "Heyyy! How's my eldest son? Have you been looking after your little siblings?" "Yeah!" Oscar said enthusiastically. "But Peter caught his thumb in the door yesterday and he cried a lot." Anneke stood off to the side, smiling slightly as she watched the reunion but fidgeting worriedly as she saw the state her husband was in.

“I’m fine,” Ky snapped, turning further away from her to stare directly at the fire.
