Name a Genre

Here's how this works: the thread starts with someone naming a genre, such as science-fiction or fantasy, and the next person names a more specific sub-genre, such as space opera or high fantasy. You could also make up genres of your own, like . . . lo-fi sci-fi, and give an explanation of what it is, if you'd like (such as calm sci-fi with something a little quirky about it). Also name another general genre for the following person to specify.

Example:

1st person - Science fiction

2nd person - Lo-fi sci-fi ; Fantasy

3rd person - High fantasy ; Thriller

... and so on

Mythology

Modern Mythology - new genre, make up myths to explain the modern world (ex: the idea for facebook came in a dream given by the god of insanity)

Dystopian

Dystopian Memoir - person with inflated sense of self, and allusions of grandeur decides to write a loosely fictional memoir about the problems in their life. It is a dystopia to the narrator, but to everyone else it is just life.

Eastern Western - The abstract concept of what a Western is except it's set somewhere east of where Westerns typically take place.

Romance

SOLAR PUNK ROMANCE - a couple of environmental activists fall in love because they bonded over innovative recycling techniques and renewable energy. I think Wall-E might actually fall under this genre?

Espionage

Corporate Espionage - Employees of rival companies attempt to infiltrate each other’s companies. Hilarity and possibly eventual friendship ensue.

Steampunk

Ballet Steampunk - retrofuturistic technology and aesthetics inspired by traditional ballet costumes, tutus, and pointe shoes, in addition to, 19th-century industrial ballet-powered machinery; not to be confused with the similar but different genres of Hip-Hop Steampunk and Ballroom Steampunk

Magical Realism

Biographical Magical Realism - a realistic pov but with magical elements, told from a biographical perspective... if "The Life of Pi" was non-fiction this would fit into this category perhaps?

Next Genre To use: Low Fantasy

Cozy Low Fantasy - Low fantasy with low stakes that just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.

Historical Fiction

Zombie Historical Fiction - Zombies set in historical periods (like the renaissance, the cold war, the industrial revolution) true to history, with mostly fictional plots. There may be some non-fiction elements.

Next to use: Tragicomedy

absurdist tragicomedy - a play or novel with both comedy and tragedy mixed together but in an absurdist fashion. Some of Shakespeare's plays, perhaps Macbeth? probably land in this genre.
