"Nobody is going to die," he said tetchily. "And everybody is going to die. It's not a fixed fact, don't you see? The truth isn't written yet."
"The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that." -Karis Nemik

"I know everything that could happen," he replied. "I have seen hundreds die because of one question. People I love. I've felt the grief I'll feel if that's the set path. And I've felt the relief of finding my family safe in the East."

“But that’s just what could happen, not what will happen.” She felt herself relax slightly. “Which is better.”

"Because I experience it all anyway. All possibilities, everyone lost. I feel that, Ky."

Ky was quiet for a moment. She didn’t understand. But it was sounding like he didn’t actually know what was going to happen. So no point in upsetting him. So she nodded quietly.

He leaned on his desk a little longer, shutting his eyes again. "...But you've finished your bone. That's on the here and now, and you wanted to make an offering."

"Then let's go." He shifted toward the door, but his fingers lingered on the desk a moment longer. "This goes without saying, but not a word of this to anybody."

She eyed him as she pushed herself to her feet, nodding. He was going to be even more insufferable about this than usual, wasn’t he? Seemed so.

He let go and took a few wobbly steps toward the door, gaining confidence as he moved. He still felt like he was going mad, but the knowledge was becoming a hum in the background rather than a roar. A buzz drilling into the back of his head.
