Bay conversed briefly with some familiar soldiers and then approached their cot, pausing as he saw that Derik was sleeping.

Rek noticed the man almost immediately when he came into the room, and had been keeping a passive eye on him since. It didn’t feel like his place to meddle — until he saw the man approaching his father. His sleeping father. And that wasn’t okay at all.
“Aw, man, I fold.” Rek threw his cards down and ruffled Kieran’s hair. “Good job, kid. You got me backed into a corner… you guys go ahead and play the next one without me, I’ll jump back in on the next hand.”
He stepped across their legs and strode towards the strange man, gaze wary but overall friendly as he approached. “Hello?”

Rek glanced at his father as well. Should he wake him?
...Perhaps.
But he didn't want to. Father never slept. Especially not when they were travelling. Rek was fairly certain the only reason Derik was sleeping now was because he knew Rek was awake currently and would be able to keep watch for them both. Once Rek fell asleep, he suspected Derik wouldn't be. At least not in a heavy slumber. Best not disturb him now.
"...yes," Rek agreed, glancing back at Terran. "Especially when you've got loads of people relying on you to get them here safely."
