"It's lichen," the soldier said. "Obviously. Wheat's expensive."

"I don't know what lichen is," she huffed. She didn't like admitting ignorance, but she damn sure wasn't going to eat moldy bread so she wasn't touching the stuff if she didn't get a solid answer soon. Besides, Ash was loaded. Couldn't he afford non-moldy bread? That was ridiculous.

"It grows on rocks," she replied. "The green and gray stuff, sort of leafy looking?"

"You can eat that?" she asked incredulously.

"The right ones, yes."
"And this is made of the right ones," the cook said irritably.

Jerica was used to cooks being annoyed with her. She basically never stopped eating. Ever. She ate the Royal Meals. Sometimes ate in the barracks, too, since they served breakfast an hour earlier and sometimes two breakfasts were a nice way to start the day. And she often bounced back and forth between the palace kitchens and the barracks dining hall throughout the day, most days, to beg for a snack to tide her over. She was a pest. But a hungry pest. And she supposed she shouldn't antagonize the lady if she wanted to be fed. "... I see... I... would... like some honey comb with it, please?" Then at the very least if the bread was gross she'd be able to munch on the comb and have a bit of the edge taken off her hunger.

The woman grabbed some honeycomb from the pantry and slapped it down next to the bread. "Enjoy," she sad curtly.

"...thank you." Jerica took the bread and honeycomb. Should she apologize? She still didn't like apologies. She turned towards the door.

"Hm." She turned away. The soldier opened the door for Jerica.

Jerica strode out into the hall then hesitated, realizing she didn't know where to go.

"No idea," Jerica admitted, looking down at her filled hands. "I... need to put these down so I can eat them."
