Rifkin was surprised when an escort actually showed up to his room and said he really was free to wander around. He’d gone in search of the kids immediately, wanting to see if Talia was okay and if Kaelan knew anything about this. It still didn’t sit right on his gut.

She stepped towards the door and he blinked at her in surprise. “Ky—? …have no idea who you are, kid.” It was a clunky save. But probably best. Why the hell was she up here? Was Ash in league with Klev? Gods.

“Oof… there’s a good la…d.” He was tense, but slowly relaxed into her embrace and returned it, patting her hair.
“I don’t have to be Kyber any more.” Ky grinned up at him, thoroughly pleased to see him. “‘Kylia’ is back in style.”
“I see.” He didn’t. Not really. But he furrowed his brow as his gaze landed on the hand-shaped bruise across her throat. “… well maybe she should go back out of style. Kylia gets her ass kicked a lot…”
