Ky cringed a little. She couldn’t imagine that lended itself to Michael behaving well— adding some jealousy and sibling rivalry in to his baseline nastiness. “Did they live here when you were growing up?”

(Same)

"No, but they'd visit every so often. They lived down in Clawholm--a lot of Ashes like to move there for some reason."

“Oh… so do a lot of them just have standing rooms here for any time they want to visit?”

He nodded. "Yep, pretty much--unless they weren't born here. That's why this place has so many bedrooms."

“…do you and Anneke stay in the room you had as a boy?” Ky asked curiously.

He shook his head, sobering. "No, we stay in one of the second floor bedrooms."

(Bathrooms?)

“…sorry.” Why was she so fucking stupid? It was obvious she shouldn’t ask something like that. Just like it was obvious she shouldn’t have touched the journals. And yet here they were.

(Bedrooms, oops!!)

He shrugged. "It would he expected for me to room there, right? And now you know where to find me."

“True,” Ky said with a nod. She’d wanted to move past it quickly, but she hesitated. “Actually, no, I don’t. Where is it? Close to Gaius’s office?”

"Two hallways from it. Straight past it, left, then right, second door on the left."

Ky tried to process what that meant, attempted to map it mentally, then utterly failed and had no idea what he meant. But she nodded. “Ah.”

It’s not like she’d be going to find him in his room anyhow.

He glanced at her. "Emery yelled at you?"

She furrowed her brow at him. He was so disorienting, latching on to teeny details she said but not giving any indication that he did so until he suddenly yanked them back into the conversation randomly. “Yeah.” They weren’t going to talk about it, though. “Wait, so are you like where the dining room is, just a floor above?”

"No, I'm on the other side. Emery's not the yelling type. What was he mad about?"

"Fine, it wasn't a yell-yell, he's just mad at me," she said, waving her hand dismissively. "So like, are you closer to the front stairs or the back stairs?"
