Ky nodded. “…I don’t mind it, though! If, um, if you have something you’d like me to, um, try. I… can.”

"No no, I was just curious." She shook her head.

“Oh.” She nodded. “Yes ma’am… I… am not fantastic anyhow. Like. I did okay. But I’m nothing compared to my father.”

“He was.” Ky nodded. She didn’t have to worry about embarrassing him. Or risking giving him the anxiety of a forced commission. There were no consequences whatsoever for singing his praises. “Very talented. And very wise. I’d be proud of myself if I turned out even a tenth as good as he was.”

She smiled slightly. "You ought to be proud of yourself for other reasons too."

Ky forced a little smile. Her instincts wanted to refuse that, too. But she didn’t want to risk getting assaulted with compliments.

Constance rose after a moment. "Anyway, sorry to intrude--I needed some time to cool off. Thank you for chatting with me!"

“Of course!” Ky popped to her feet with a nod and a smile. “Thank you for the company.”

"I think I'll have some tea; you're welcome to join me for that as well if you wish!"

“Oh, um…” she glanced over at Emery across the room, then back at Lady Constance. “…I don’t think I’m supposed to, ma’am.”

She looked over at Emery. "You'll be with me the whole time though," she pointed out. "We can ask if it's alright, though."

“Yes ma’am.” She dipped her head, grateful Lady Constance was humoring her anxiety. She figured she was probably right; that Gaius trusted her as much as a babysitter as he did Emery. But it still made Ky feel better to ask first. Just in case. She folded her book and set it on one of the return tables, then glanced back towards Lady Constance.

Constance led the way towards Emery, who looked up and smiled. "Hello, milady!" he said. "How can I help you?"
"Hi, Emery! I was wondering if you might let Ky out from under your watchful eye for a few minutes while we grab some tea. Would that be alright?"
"Sure!" He nodded. "I'll be up here when you're done. Enjoy!"

Well, that was easier than expected. She smiled a little and dipped her head. “Thank you.”
