He dipped his head. "We have food to spare, for now. It will be more difficult later in the winter, but he won't be competing with human hunters then."

Ky nodded. That was never something she worried about much, even when she was poor. Sure, there was less food and the meals were a lot smaller, but she was also working less, so she wasn’t intolerably hungry. And then thankfully Makata and Aleth both believed they got better work out of slaves that were healthy and fed, so she didn’t have to worry about it then, either. She supposed it’d be a bigger deal here, though. It’s not like they could bop over to the next town to barter, if the town happened to run too low on food, like that one winter when she was eight. “That’s nice. Seems like it causes less anxiety that way.”

"I suppose it does." Gaius was just glad he had servants, friends, and family to eat what he had. He would do better as a peasant, he was sure--he had done better as a peasant, though Anneke's mother and Sara's family had both insisted he eat everything they gave him, even if they were starving.
