"I've trained my daughter Ishai and two others, though they were back home in Akaratara."

That surprised Ky. She hadn’t realized Kazhra was old enough to have a daughter old enough to train. But this was her opportunity for deflection. She switched to Akarataran. “Ada’s from Akaratara.”

Kazhra looked surprised to hear Ky speak her language, and she looked to Ada. "You as well?" She smiled broadly. "What brings you here?"
"Kidnapping," Ada replied swiftly, offering her hand. "I'm Ada of the Isi, nice to meet you."

Ky smiled a bit, pleased both at the surprise and the fact that the distraction worked. She always found it funny when she could surprise people with her language skills. It was an even more satisfying revelation if they’d been insulting her in their language before they knew she spoke it.

Kazhra's smile fell at Ada's response. "Like too many of us," she said grimly. "But you're safe here. And you're of the Isi! I have a lot of respect for your people; I used to pretend I was an Isi warrior when I was a little girl."
"You could have come to us," Ada replied. "We'd have been happy to have you."

Ky buried her hands in her pockets. She wasn’t part of this conversation, even though she was still tuned in. But she eyed Bay. Why didn’t he have emotions?

Bay eyed her back, still as stone.

Kazhra smiled slightly. "Well...I was happy where I was, too. Comfortable. The Isi were just a fantasy for me."
"Where in Akaratara are you from?" Ada asked.
"Near Picrut," Kazhra replied. "A tiny village a few miles from the city."

Ky flashed a nervous smile, wondering if that’d be enough to draw an emotion out of him.

He simply gave her a nod. "I trust you and Lord Ash had a constructive discussion?" he asked as Ada and Kazhra continued their conversation.

“Um.” Ky hesitated. If she said yes, Ada would know she lied. Was she too distracted to notice? Did Ky have the courage to lie to Captain Bay in the first place. “I'm sure we… will? We, uh, didn’t really talk after you left.”

Emery glanced between them. Had something happened? He knew Bay's deliberate speech had some sort of meaning; he was skirting around an issue. Was Gaius having an episode?
